Running someone to death for telling a lie? Yeah that makes sense. Of course I’m sure the parents never tell lies do they? Kids don’t lie because they are bad people; they lie because their parents make them terrified of the consequences of telling the truth. Anyone who is forced to live in fear is going to lie on a regular basis. Also I can tell you that the psychological damage from being forced to eat or not to eat certain foods far outweighs the health benefits. If you don’t want kids eating sweets than don’t keep any in the house. And if they occasional get their hands on some sweets outside of the house its not going to hurt them.

Anyway, these two women should definitely be held criminally responsible for the girl’s death. After all even a one-hour run would be excessive for someone who is not a trained runner. I have to wonder how long they would have let this girl run if she had not collapsed when she did, and how long it would have been before they thought to give her a water break. In a way though it’s probably best that she died. After all, after growing up under the thumb of these kinds of authoritarian parents she would have ended up pretty screwed up in the head herself. She would either end up a scared little programmed mouse or an angry rebellious person and might eventually do the same things to her own kids.

Wake up and look at the facts as published, reed330. It's people with kneejerk reactions like yours that allow these kinds of people to get off with little or no punishment. If we can't get angry about such blatant mistreatment and abuse of a child, we'll never be angry enough to punish anyone for anything. Actually, Dean, the only kneejerk reaction I see are those that read one brief article and are ready to impose the death penalty. If the allegations reported are true, I agree, the punishment needs to be severe. However, Reed330 is not saying that they need to be acquitted. He is simply pointing out that there are 2 sides to every story. From my reading of the article, while it is true that the police received a report and some witness accounts that the girl was forced to run for 3 hours, the only eyewitness interviewed said he simply saw her running in the yard around 4:00 p.m. Additionally, if I knew enough about the situation to tell the police that the girl was forced to run for 3 hours, I would be asking myself, why I didn't do something to prevent the child's death.

If we condemn every person to death based on the media's portrayal of an incident or the accounts of a few, we are no better than those that chose to impose stoning on an adulterer during biblical times. I think those of you condemning these women to hell ought to know what Jesus had to say about this.

since the cops got repeated calls, why on earth didn't they do something before it was too late? Or contact CPS? Jesus was addressing the church in those passages, not government. In the passage that I quote above, Jesus affirms the entire Scripture as delivered by Israel, including the government's responsibility to punish evildoers.

Tabasco Ed, if I need to understand theology, then you need to learn how to read comments. I made it clear that I am not against punishment or even capital punishment being meted out by society, and I also made it clear that my comments were responses to other comments - from individuals - which smacked of vigilante justice. Jesus' words regarding personal forgiveness were aptly applied. And which "theology" should I be understanding by the way? Baptist? Roman Catholic? Quaker? Anglican? You pick. Also, IF all of the O.T. was validated by Christ, then why do Christians not do or not do all that the O.T. SAYS to do and not do? I'm a Christian. The words of Jesus are all I need.

Christians believe that when Christ sacrificed himself on the Cross that the law was fulfilled. That means the law has been met and does not have to be followed anymore. That is why Christians feel they don't have to follow the dietary laws and a few others in the Old Testament.

This is the verse :But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

This passage does not say that is appropriate punishment but indicates that the person that leads a child astray would be much better off it that happened to him. To me this passage could be aimed more at a child molester considering the hatred and bitterness that some victims grow to have because of the monsters that victimize them.

Even I know that Jesus lived 1300 years after Moses. But the death penalty was rarely carried out by the ancient Hebrews. Some of the early rabbis stated that if it's use once in a 100 years, that's too often.

The Sheriff's office has no duty to respond to the complaints of private citizens. They serve the county government. The fact that they often to do is based on convenience not duty.

If the cops were to investigate everyone that I see running on the streets they would be doing nothing but chasing runners. I read nothing about a concerned citizen making any calls. The quoted witness said he saw the girl running but thought nothing of it. The call came in from the stepmother after the girl had seized and become unresponsive.

I suggest you go back and re-read the article. Specifically, the fifth pararaph from the bottom. The only thing I'm not sure of, it doesn't say if the callers contacted the authorities while she was running, or after they heard about her death, and recalled seeing her.

Either way, this is a brutal story, and amounts to nothing less than torture. What a couple of bullies. How do you sustain that kind of anger for three hours, and over a candy bar? Hopefully, they'll get the punishment they have coming when it's all said and done.

If you want speedy response from the police, tell them you think you see someone with a marijuana joint - they'll have 3 cars there in under 5 minutes.

These are two ordinary women. The story isn't about police, or any law enforcement. Its about people like you and me. They could be your neighbor. They have all the rights any of us have. You would loudly defend their rights to mete out any punishment to their child that you thought was right, with no interference from any authorities.

These women have a right to own guns. At least until they are convicted of a crime. All you gun nuts out there, how do you feel about them being able to go out and get a gun? Would you want them running around in your neighborhood with guns? But, until you read this story, you would have yelled your support for their right to own, and carry as many guns as they could afford. Until you read the story, these women were "American Citizens", with all rights to own guns.

Actually, in terms of guns, maybe this story is really about your judgement in such cases. Who, exactly are you, Mr. Gun Nut, to be deciding who gets to carry?

See, its a complicated world we live in. Yesterday, half you would have been baying at the moon, proclaiming the right of these women to raise their child as they see fit, with no government "interference". Today, you're ready to string them up. Seems your judgement wasn't worth much yesterday, was it? How do I know its any better today?

This is really about all of us, and the rights and responsibilities we have in a modern world. Maybe the founding fathers didn't know everything. As I look at their pictures I doubt you would have to" force " them to eat candy. Looks like they have been doing that willingly. And as far as running goes...neither seem as if they have ran a day in their lives!

It is funny how people do not read stories the way they are written but rather pick out only some points out....this little girl was not made running for a piece candy rather LIE about eating it. These two woman may of choose this punishment over spanking (which everyone is so against) not knowing that she may die. Maybe there were hoping the girl will give up after awhile and apologize to the grandmother. Who knows she may not have been angel at all and they were trying to teach her a lesson. She may of been loved by her step mother...not all step mothers are evil like cinderella's.

Couple of months ago there was a mother forcing a child stand on corner of intersection with a sign that he steals, lie and use drugs and everyone was saluting the mom. Well every one has a different parenting tactics and let me tell you it would not cross my mind either that running around of a young child can kill them...I guess I am not as educated as you all are. I remember growing up running everywhere with my friends and did not have gatorates.

In my opinium it was a unfortunate accident that they have to live with forever.

My 2 year old runs all day and if I don't force water on him he would not even bother but then he does not sprint like this girl obviously did everyone knows that from this story. We had a neighbor who locked her kids out of the house when she slept days because she worked nights. They roamed the neighborhood causing trouble, and then when it got dark they knocked on doors looking for a warm safe place and a handout of food because it was past suppertime. I can't think of a safer place for her children than in a room with her while she sleeps. Moms have to sleep even when their children are awake sometimes, sometimes illness and sometimes just overwhelming fatigue from family and/or job pressures.

I think blondebek sounds like a ditz and I'm not into her brand of religious thinking, but think about what you are saying.

And saying she had children out of wedlock or had been divorced you left out being widowed young. Who says "out of wedlock" anymore anyway?

Carmel1, Differnet and a few others don't have a very high opinion of stepmothers and seem to think the child was abused becuase she was the woman's stepchild. I don't think that is the case. I think the woman/en were just abusive. Being biologicaly related to someone or not doesn't make someone less mean to you.

I was abused by my own biological mother so severely that the courts removed me from my mother and had me live with my dad (and stepmom). This was unheard of in rural Indiana in the 80's so you can imagine the extent of the abuse I had endured FROM MY OWN MOTHER! My step-mom loved me, raised me, swatted my rear end when I needed it, encouraged me and was in every sense of the word my mother. She is now my best friend.

I am now an adoptive step-parent. I have loved MY son since his Bio-mom decided he wasn't worth even showing up to court for the divorce/custody/adoption hearings.

Neither you, differnet, nor you Carmel, know if the bio-mom even showed up to court to have her daughter "ripped away." If this bio-mom is anything like my son's bio-mom, she didn't even know where her daughter lived nor that she was dead until she saw it on the news.

Statistically, stepparents ARE much more abusive to kids than biological ones, although that primarily applies to stepdads who are often pedophiles that prey on single moms to get to the kids. Still, all the stories we learned as kids must have been based on some degree of social reality back when stepmoms were commoner than today because so many women died young. When a lion takes over a pride, the first thing he does is kill all the cubs so he won't be wasting resources on offspring that aren't kids. Some human beings might as well be lions.

In any case, abortion obviously won't solve the problem of abuse by step parents because as far as I know, it isn't retroactive. Usually the step parent only wants the man, or the woman, and at best tolerates the child. A few people are different, but they are saints. Human beings are animals too, and we have instincts we cannot always overcome. Like it or don't, divorce, remarriage, and out of wedlock births DO put kids at higher risk, no matter how much we lie to ourselves for adult convenience.

BTW I was also abused by my real mother and I guess you could say neglected by my father because he did nothing to stop her. He was downright afraid of her; a paradoxical case of a WWII vet who was also a complete wimp. He even lied, routinely, about his ethnic background because somebody "might" be prejudiced. I know biological parents can be losers, but the statistics are still true. You are usually better off with your real parents. Even kids in foster care get abused all the time even though they are supposedly screened. Do you believe in evolution and genetics? Then you know there is survival value in prefering your biological kids. When a man or woman accepts a stepchild in lieu of having and devoting resources to the bio kids, he or she has just reduced his/her Darwinian fitness to zero. It all the members of a species did this, we would go extinct. It's true that human beings can overcome our instincts, but it isn't easy, and it's a bit much to expect that everyone can do this.

What, if it's any of my business, would you do to protect your child from making bad decisions? I understand that you'd want to protect him from the consequences. Commendable, that. I always thought, however, that punishment was one of the ways in which parents could try to steer children away from the life courses that they'd regret. Matthewsmommy, they don't say where the father was, but given that it was a three-hour window during the day, it's reasonable to assume he was at work or (or, as two other say, stationed abroad).

It's a thin line between discipline and child abuse these days. Probably why America kids have gotten soft. The mother and grandmother made a terrible mistake, with the punishment being excessive. If you make someone perform an extremely physical activity, at least give them water. I don't think the military makes their recruits run for 3 hours without water. Those two deserve some jail time, but not life in prison.
