BMW going 100 mph crashes into KFC

One person is dead and four others injured after a vehicle crashed into a KFC in Landover, Md., Monday night.

Rose Smith said she was standing at the next door Citgo Gas Station, and saw a BMW speeding down Martin Luther King, Jr. Highway.

"When it hit the curb it went airborne. And flipped, flipped, flipped, flipped," said Smith.

For more, visit NBCWashington.com

It flipped into a sign, a fence, a large metal donation box and an SUV parked in the restaurant parking lot. The driver of the impacted SUV was not hurt.

"This is a pretty brutal scene," said Cpl. Evan Baxter of the Prince George's County Police.

Police said the driver was most likely going more than 100 mph. The crash scene was more than 100 yards long.

The driver of the vehicle, identified only as a 29-year-old female, was ejected from the vehicle and killed.  Investigators said that a male passenger in the BMW was not seriously injured.  Two other people on the scene were hurt, with non-life threatening injuries.

There is also some structural damage to the restaurant, which is located at 6701 Martin Luther King Jr. Highway, at the intersection of Sheriff Road.  A collapse team was dispatched to stabilize the building and board up the restauarant's windows, which had shattered.

Police said speed was definitely a factor in the crash, and investigators were testing for alcohol on Tuesday morning.

Any news on the ethnicity of the driver?

The driver is officially counted on the census as "Dead."

Ethnicity really is not relevant to this discussion, and your focus on it only shows your racism.

That is a major chicken craving to be going that fast! The driver got what was coming to her. I am glad no one else was seriously injured. Leave the triple digit MPH to the pro's.

My bet is that she was mad at the passenger (probably her boyfriend), and she decided to try to kill him along with herself, and ended up sentencing herself to and carrying out her own death penalty for a murder she tried but failed to commit. If that turns out to be the case, who says Karma's dead?

Your a knucklhead and the driver was a fool. I feel sorry for her parents. A dead child is never a good thing. I hope they don't blame themselves. She was old enough to know better.

BigNutterzz - Surely this must be your first time in reading BSNBC articles. They will only specifically identify the race of a person if they are white. They don't want to appear racist by identifying people of other colours/ethnicities.

To the others slamming your for relevance of the ethnicity of the person, it is as relevant as the brand of car. What difference did the fact that it was a BMW make to the article. They included the age of the driver but EXCLUDED the race of the driver and the model of the car. What is wrong with the public knowing whether it was a 3-series or a 5-series and what the model year was.

Some of us might want to use the info for consumer report-type data. If it was a 3-series, one might conclude that the models are prone to crash when driven over 100 mph down city streets. If it was a 5-series, one might deduce that they are prone to eject the drivers when driving 100 mph down city streets. After ejection is when the car crashed because the driver was no longer able to control the car.

A wonder the passenger survived. The ejected driver must not have been wearing his seat belt.

I think you are correct that she wasn't wearing a seat belt. I have seen a large number of wrecks in which, if the people involved had their seat belts on would have survived the crash. I have not seen any fatalities due to having a seat belt on. Why in the world was she going 100 mph? No doubt that a BMW is a fine "driving machine" but all of its advances are cancelled out by a "low tech" driver! Very unfortunate for the young woman! Red

Truly a testament to BMWs safety. Look at that damn car in the picture. I believe a 7 series. The driver, that was ejected and died was obviously not wearing her seat belt. The passenger who was, was not seriously injured!!!

My BMW X5 saved my life once rear-ended at 50mph while I was stopped. An I count on my ///M5 to keep me safe every day. Truly amazing cars.

I agree about the BMW safety. 1 month ago I was rear ended while stopped in my 325i by a guy going 55, pushed into the car in front of me. Poor 325 was ruined, I wasn't.

Very Misleading Heading.. the car did NOT hit a KFC at a 100 MPH, it left the highway at 100MPH... flipped over and rolled several times striking cars and sign posts before coming to a rest BESIDE a KFC Restaurant. SOME damage was caused to the restaurant. The heading makes it sound like it tried to build a drive through.

Not to worry, pretty sure her parents will find a lawyer to sue the police for causing her to flee, resulting in the untimely death of "perfect" child who's only crime was having an adventurous spirit.

She must have wanted many things really badly, since she was ticketed last month for going 91mph, her license was suspended, and she had expired tags.

            Whole bag of crazy.

The driver of the BMW was a 29-year-old woman, ABC7 has learned. She was ticketed Jan. 22 for allegedly driving 91 mph in a 55 mph zone on the Capital Beltway, and was also driving on a suspended license with expired tags, ABC7 has learned.

Not sure I feel sorry for the driver that died. There is no reason to be driving at that speed unless you are on the indy track. Due to her negligence, 3 people are hurt and a restaurant has damages. If she had any money to her name she should be liable to pay for repairs and medical bills.

On second thought. I saw a documentary once where a bmw's gas pedal got stuck down resulting in a crash and some of the passengers were killed. It was proven to be a defect in the car. BMW specifically.

Easy to blame the car, but if that's the case she should have had it fixed last month after she was ticketed for going 91mph in a 55mph zone. She also had a suspended license and expired tags.

It's doubtful that the car was the defective component.

The value of the car is irrelevant. The fact that it was a BMW is all that needs to be known. The author of the article will let us know what we need to know. The brand but not the model or year is what caused the accident. This would not have happened it it had been any other brand car. <sarc>

If speed weren't a "factor" in the crash, then the vehicle wouldn't have been moving, and an accident would not have occurred. Speed is a factor in EVERY crash. But speed is rarely the primary cause of an accident.

Perhaps her shoe implant, to keep her from leaning left, caused an unusual amount of pressure on the gas pedal?

This is hardly the forum for your tired weed vs. alcohol argument. I LOVE weed, but I'm glad it's illegal. It keeps the Kooks out.

Driving at ridiculous speeds is asking for trouble. Not wearing your seat belt is asking to get injured/killed. I don't know the exact circumstances, as none of us do, but I'm thinking that the driver made a series of bad decisions, and she paid for them with her life, tragically.

On the side note, if I owned a BMW, considering how expensive they are, I'd probably drive the damned thing 5 under and be paranoid of other drivers. I can't afford to drop $50k+ on a car.

Her death was not tragic. It was well-earned. Please consider that the vehicle may have been stolen or bought with drug money. She was on MLK Jr. Highway, so it's a good chance of either.

You oughta have to show competence to drive - in airplanes, you have to be checked out on the plane and get special tickets for multi-engine, jet etc. Should be the same for driving - you start out with a license that is only good for mopeds, graduate to 500 CC, Harleys, sub compacts, full size, etc. Get a ticket, get busted back a level or two - that MIGHT help some of this insanity. Or not....

Yeah, but mopeds and scooters are super unsafe. You don't want the newer drivers to start with less safe vehicles. Now if they made all new drivers start out with a prius that would be interesting.

They're not unsafe in their own right. They're just not what you want to be riding when the idiot driving 100 mph in the BMW comes your way. Even a KFC isn't particularly safe in that case.

Another made two illegal right turns and didn't signal any of his lane changes. I see this a lot and an inordinate number are BMW drivers. I saw this same observation in an article in Road and Track magazine, so I'm not the only one seeing it.
