Girl, 12, found naked and rummaging in trash for food in Calif.

A teacher’s assistant from California faces child endangerment charges after her 12-year-old daughter was found naked and rummaging through trash cans for food, officials said.

Police were called on Thursday after a local resident saw a girl walking in Temecula, south-east of Los Angeles, wearing no clothes and eating food out of trash cans.

Tracy Betts, 40, a teaching assistant at nearby Vail Elementary, was arrested at the school on suspicion of felony child endangerment.

NBC Los Angeles: Naked Girl Found in Temecula, Mom Charged

A report in the Riverside Press-Enterprise named the resident who alerted police as Dominique Prado, who had been outside pulling weeds from the yard with her husband when she saw the girl rooting through a neighbor’s trash can.

The girl completely naked, without even shoes on her feet, and trying to cover herself with a car floor mat, the newspaper said.

Prado told the newspaper that the girl, who was holding a small piece of bread in her hands, ran around the corner and out of sight.

Prado called 911, and police searched the neighborhood. Prado and her husband found the girl in a BMW parked on their street just around the corner, the newspaper said.

press release from Riverside Sheriff's office said the girl was taken into protective custody and received unspecified treatment at a hospital.

Jason Kandel, NBC Los Angeles and msnbc.com's Alastair Jamieson contributed to this report.

AKRandy, I'm not sure which story you read, but this one only listed one specific account of a teacher assistant and a kid, not multiples. Please stop exaggerating to meet your political propaganda needs. There is enough of that being done over at Fox News Entertainment.

Sorry, but until I hear that the mother was unable, as opposed to unwilling, to provide for her child, I do not see it as an example of societal failure. Neglectful parents have existed in every age of this world. But this woman was employed. I don't expect that a teacher's assistant makes a huge salary; until this moment I was unaware that there was such a professional position.

But this woman evidently managed to feed and clothe herself, so her failure to do so seems more a problem relating to her own flaws, not society's.

In this particular instance, it is worth noting that society has taken steps to rectify the situation, as much as that is possible for a child who is no doubt the victim of years of neglect.

Sad story. Don't see any parallel to India, Brazil or anywhere else, though.

Probably because the teacher assistants don't get paid much money. Yes, her mother should have the book thrown at her. This is what we are heading for? I feel sorry for that little girl, and hope she can get over this horrible memory.

This story is not about liberal or conservative politics. Nor is about California as the embodiment of all that is decadent and nonfunctional in our society. It is about an apparent case of child neglect.

That's it.

More likely, its mental illness. And of course, those funds for treatment have been cut. By whom???

This shouldn't be a politicized situation anyways! This is a humanitarian problem - how do we care for this girl?

no I was never what one would consider financially "mighty", I am educated but not in a field that would bring me great wealth, and I never looked down my nose at poor, starving children who live off garbage, actually images like that were what led me to get a degree in Human Nutrition so I could help feed the starving children.

Boy you people sure are vicious whenever anyone questions your "exceptionalism", perhaps if you didn't live under that particular fantasy you might realize that we are all one race, the human race, no one is better than anyone else simply because of the country they were born in or the color of their skin.

Meaning they traveled State to State living off Welfare System. I think back to those years of unplesentness, and wonder should I move back on streets. For there where some very good times, living where ever I could Park and not get awoke by Police. Meet plenty of People in that way, rich and Poor. STAND AND DELIVER, ironic name to go with the story.

just a few weeks ago 2 teachers were busted for molesting childern and feeding them cookies with semen on them in cali.

they were from the same school and prompted all the teachers from that school to be fired and replacements found.

i agree that politics should be kept out, but, it is a wonder why all this is surfacing from one state all at the same time.

i guarantee that if all this would have happened in texas ther would have been the opposite comment made.

i wonder how many parents this teacher had accused of abuse before this came out.

AKRandy, are you so ideologically blind as to think that this kind of human failure on the part of one neglectful parent is somehow represents the mindset of an entire population? No need to answer that. I already know the answer. I just wanted to repeat it so you can read how ridiculous that sounds.

Having said that, two can play your stupid game (and I do mean that facetiously): all of the Temecula state and federal representatives are Republicans. So this must be a manifestation of failed republican policies that refuse to help the poor, unemployed, and the under-employed.

In the state legislature Temecula is located in the 36th Senate District, represented by RepublicanJoel Anderson, and in the 64th and 66th Assembly Districts, represented by Republicans Brian Nestande and Kevin Jeffries respectively. Federally, Temecula is located in California's 49th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +10[24] and is represented by Republican Darrell Issa.

You sir, fail on all polical counts. But, more importantly, you fail on all human counts.

well if you leave it to the tea party republicans, the local community churches should be the ones footing the bill for this childs "mental illness". Or is it that we're not paying the mother a living wage so that she can feed and clothe her child because the liberals in the state of california are busy funnelling all the money to the unions and illegal aliens. Or is this simply a case of an idiot adult having a child and keeping that child in captivity to satisfy their sick twisted agenda. Maybe its high time we got off this political bandwagon where we are at each others throats and maybe try to use that to do good for our fellow man.

Okay, so the most likely answer is this woman is just a terrible excuse for a mom but I am way too familiar with childhood mental illness to jump on the bandwagon of verbally lynching this lady until all the facts are straight. I have seen mentally ill teens have similar episodes as this girl , as a parent of this type of child it is beyond difficult. (BUT yeah, most likely the mom is just a nut job)

Well, raddave , if the wingnuts have overrun the community, then if AKRandy's facts are correct, these newcomers have apparently not yet found the voting booth.

But seriously, there really is no political issue here. I've not heard even the wakiest liberal, or the most retrograde, reactionary conservative advocate either allowing or encouraging the neglect of children.

Of all the posts I've seen on this thread, the most thoughtful and least emotional, was by Kallie (#1.23). As she points out, it is quite likely that this allegedly neglectful parent may be dealing with a mentally ill child. Confronted with such a parenting situation, I'm sure many of us, particularly those without a spouse, and of limited income, might have difficulty dealing with it

But either way, this is not a democratic vs republican issue, nor even a libtard vs repugnant issue. It is, most likely, an instance of parental neglect and of child endangerment, or of mental illness.

Kallie, good luck with your parenting struggles, and nice post.

Clearly the mother dropped the ball somewhere, but I am not so quick to assume intended abuse. Maybe the child is mentally ill and got out of the house, maybe she was in the care of another person who was abusing her and she escaped, or maybe the mother was doing something unthinkable and the girl escaped.

Either way, the only acceptable excuse I can think of for your child going through the trash for food is if they were both homeless. Certainly no excuse for the child being naked. And it sounds like the mom has a job so even then surely she can afford to put even gas station food on the table.

I really do hope for the sake of the child and all the children that this mother helps to educate, that it was not due to abuse by the mother.

maybe they havnt,...it seems when it comes to elections of local district representatives nearly everyone cant find a voting booth,...these elections almost always suffer from poor voter turnout, maybe its apathy, maybe its disenfranchisement, or voter are just plain lazy..likely the latter...as a result the representatives do not always actually represent the majority views,...nevertheless....in my personal opinion it does have alot to do with the liberal pop culture, and the entitlement mentality of so many lefties...i can hear this woman now rationalizing why her needs are far more important than her daughters....i don't think this mentality is exclusive to librals,...but a trend is a trend....and in california we can see this trend manifest itself in every negative way possible....from hollywood self indulgence. to therapy mavins, wiccan vampires..you name it, every wack job on the planet either lives in california or are on thier way there.

I can't begin to express how sad it is to read all these posts of people jumping to conclusion on insufficient evidence, and even worse are those who are trying to tie polical motivations to all of this. I am forced to agree with the few thinking people here that this article gives far too little information to base ANY conclusions on. If it turns out to be neglect or abuse the woman should be punished and the child moved into better care but as noted by the thinkers here it could also be a matter of a mentally or emotionally disturbed child, in which case we should ALL get behind making sure the girl gets proper treatment.

What is truly sad and a very poor commentary on our culture and people is that the percentage of people who didn't jump to unfounded and unsupportable conclusions is a very small minority. No wonder we're in such economic, political and ecological straits.

Like several on here I think there is too little info to come to a conclusion. My main concern is that if everyone would take responsibility for themselves and their children and make sure they are held responsible for any actions they do (good or bad as the good actions need as much if not more recognition to reinforce good behavior)then maybe we could rid ourselves of some of the evil things that happen in this day and age. Please take care of yourself and those close to you before you throw stones at someone else. Lots of love and personal responsibility can go a long long long way to solve lots of problems.

This is a somewhat shocking story that pales compared to the shocking posts, from all directions. One was good, in my opinion, that put forward the possibility that the child is mentally ill. The simple fact is that, regardless of the spin, the name calling, the making this something it's not, the story doesn't give nearly enough information to draw any conclusions. It was/is certainly a sad situation and I hope it gets the attention it needs from people able to evaluate and help, but I don't know enough to have an opinion. Neither do the writers of the vast majority of these posts.

This whole knee-jerk reaction with attendant politicizing says volumes about our country today.

I have to agree with all posters who suggested the child may have a mental illness. Mom may have been at work, and the child was in the care of someone else, OR, maybe even home sick and on her own (she is old enough) and Mom didn't realize just how bad things are for her child, OR child on meds is fine but maybe child didn't take her meds or tricked Mom into thinking she had. I just can't jump to the conclusion that Mom is abusive or negligent. Not until more facts come out in this story. I have been more likely to jump to the conclusion of the child has a mental illness.

David Walker-easy for you to attack the people who you know won't attack back-the pro-lifer's.

Lou, where do you live that pro lifers don't attack back? I've lived in the Northeast, the Midwest and Cal. In none of these places have I seen the anti-choice people be particularly retiring. In fact, some places they throw bombs and murder doctors-so much for not attacking back!

Even if you didn't have your facts totally wrong about this, where do you get your statistics? I didn't see the form that acknowledged my religious preference last time I donated money. We know you pulled this 'statistic' out while sitting in the bathroom, because there is no data of this sort collected-nice try but your bold face lie is very obvious. Do you always create statistics to try to validate your personal opinions?

Calling pro-choice people 'pro-abortion' is like calling AAA members 'pro-breakdown'. It's not that we want unwanted pregnancies, we simply acknowledge the possibility and want options when they occur. I’ve never met anyone claiming to be ‘pro-abortion’ in my life. We can't know, but perhaps if this woman had access to medical care thirteen years ago, we wouldn't be reading this article.

Like so much of mainstream news, this story asks more questions than it answers. For some to speculate that it is the fault of 'permissive Liberal America' or the repression of 'Right wing puritans' says so much more about the political baggage you are carrying than any useful speculation about this story.

Just for the record, the voters of CA voted against gay marriage and have voted down every attempt at gun control. With the exception of parts of the SF Bay area and Hollywood the state isn't all that liberal. It has a very big military and arms industry presence. Most of the Eastern half of the state has more in common with Nevada and Arizona than SF or LA. Thinking of California as a monolith would be as crazy as thinking there were religious litmus tests for charity donors.

A neglected girl was rescued and her mother arrested. Did this really tell anyone how to vote?

I didn't see anything in the article that said the 12 year old even had a mother,or a father for that matter.

Joe F Las Vegas - below is the first sentence of a very short article. As you are perhaps aware, the mother-daughter relationship is mutual, so if this teacher's assistant was charged with the endangerment of her daughter, if follows, that the 12-year-old girl referenced does have a mother, just perhaps a not very effective one.

A teacher’s assistant from California faces child endangerment charges after her 12-year-old daughter was found naked and rummaging through trash cans for food, officials said.

This makes me realize how so much misinformation creeps into public debates; too many people just do not read or listen to any utterance that wouldn't fit on a bumper sticker.

I'm no expert by any means, but as soon as I saw this, I immediately thought about a mother who may have had a fight with the girl (the girl might have said something that set the mother off, or whatever), and threw her out of the house with nothing. Honestly, I know that sounds far fetched to some of you, but I know people have done that, and I probably would have been a victim of the same thing, had my mother have raised me. She wasn't the nicest to me after she met me 20 years after she left us...so no telling what could have happened.

I wish people who don't want children, would give them to some of us who do. There is no sense in causing these poor kids pain and grief like they do.

I have to wonder, did I miss something or doesn't she have any relatives? The story doesn't give much information to go on. (Typical MSN).

Also to the feminist that decided this must be a case of some poor woman that was "FORCED" to participate in sex without a condom or the pill - here's a bit of wisdom for you -- if you don't have the 50 cents to invest in condom and you don't want a pregnancy then you have three choices: 1. say no 2. oral/ anal or 3. masturbation. none of those options appeal to you then its your fault no one Else's.

I am quite heartbroken to read all the articles of how children are being treated in this world. Do people not realize that they give birth to our future?

Do you want to breed children who have love, and strength in their hearts, or those who steadily grow this world to be cruel and cold?

Our world will not get better until we teach our children well, love them , protect them and guide them. We are growing crooked, injured trees instead of tall, strong straight ones.

These events make me lose hope that there is a rhyme or reason about what happens in life. So many couples are infertile and the universe gives these vile people a life to ruin.

That the child might be psychotic occurred to me immediately because I have a psychotic teenager who has done some bizarre things that have nothing to do with neglect. Some kids rummage through garbage even though they are well fed at home. Heck, I have been known to pick up furniture, lamps, and even electronics from the side of the road on garbage day because the local college students discard everything when they graduate. (You just let the electronics dry for two weeks in case they were exposed to rain.) Of course it's neglect that she couldn't control her child but we just don't know enough to condemn. Without the correct diagnosis and medication, it can be nearly impossible.

Maybe because they cannot afford or can't get access to birth control to prevent pregnancies they don't want and/or cannot handle!

So easy to paint people into a corner and then point judgemental fingers.

Not saying this particular situation relates to my point, but if access to birth control is taken away at the same time further restrictions are placed on the legal option of pregnancy termination, you will see more and more child abuse and child neglect cases. Pro-birth forces need to take responsibility for the children whose existence their principles are greatly responsible for!

Access to birth control in the USA is not the problem. Condoms are cheap, the pill is given out in many places for free or for less than $20 a month. People use that kind of logic but it makes no sense in THIS COUNTRY, it's so easy to get that it's ludacris to try to claim that birth control access is the problem.

The inherent story here is the girl's mother was a bad parent.

BlackHillsLaura - or maybe they are just too stupid, irresponsible or lazy to care if they pop another one out.

No where in the article does it say there was no food or clothing to be had for the girl, just that the mother was not providing care, which could be from neglect or to abusively control the child. OR, the girl could have diminished mental capacity herself. It could sound that way - she did not look to other people for help, she avoided other people and hid in a car when they were looking for her.

That argument doesn't hold water. The mother already had access to the ONLY proven, sure-fire method of preventing pregnancy she may not want and/or cannot handle. It is called abstinence!!! It may not be "fun" but being "fun" is not one of the criteria for making such important decisions that will impact not only you but, more importantly, your offspring as well.

        tnt4him-3309586

What? the parents knew 12 years ago that this would happen so don't have kids?

Most likely the answer to your question is "yes", more or less. The parents probably didn't know that this specific travesty would happen, but I'd be willing to bet they knew (or should have known) that they were not in position to properly care for a child at that time. If they were not in a position to do so at that time, and went and got pregnant anyway, then the current status of this situation would have been highly predictable!

This is all about being responsible for your own actions, or being irresponsible in this case. Once in this situation, the parent has the responsibility to do what is in the best interest of the child. The mother could have and should have given the child up for adoption as soon as it was apparent that she could not properly care for the child. It is really a simple concept...it is called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!

I just knew the subject of birth control would come up in a case where the parents are simply negligent or focused more on their own egocentric lives than the care of their child, wanted or not.

Condoms are cheap, but let's stop this chatter and let abortion become the rule...in 2 or 3 generations those now on the left will be no more as they and their kind will opt for this other name for murder and irresponsibility and those of the right ususlaly of parts with strong moral and work fiber will survive.

ANd if we adopy Islam for 2 or 3 generations we will soon be rid of the sexual and social deviants, and murderers, rapist and child abusers once and for all...at what point we can denounce Islam as they do Christianity when it suits there needs.

But all aside, we would not do such things anymore than letting our children be killed or running about unattended as those of a far different set of ethical and moral norms than those than built and now defend this nation.

Birth control has nothing with watching over, feeding and clothing for your chil - it is a question of personal character and strong Christian or Islamic values.

FYI, stop blaming the government for your own personal responsibility. I say again your personal responsibility!!!!! Really?! Come on for christ sakes when will the human race just accept the choices they make and stop pointing the fingers. I'm sorry BlackHillsLaura I totally disagree with your statement. The parents are completely at fault for such behavior and if they are endagering their child in anyway shape or form they should be held accountable for all their actions. A child running around naked in the streets looking for food is not the blame of our government over some birth control methods and if they are available at a cheap cost. Serioulsy!? You are out of freaking mind. Go back to your little hole until you can figure out the idea behind being accountable for your own actions.

It truly is a sad story to know that a grown as woman took 12 years to realize they were unfit to be a parent for this child, and not to just kick them out on thier own at such a age, but to kick them out stripped of everything this poor girl ever possessed. Great job, these parents should pay to the fullest extent of the law!!! You know what it should extend beyond that, as the law has a way to protect people as well.

there are a lot of conclusions being jumped to by many people. political conclusions, state specific conclusions, and conclusions about the mother.

We have no indication from the article about why this girl was naked and eating from trash cans. Yes the mother could be abusive, OR....

the girl could be mentally ill and escaped the house, OR....

the girl could have been under the care of a third party who abused her with the mother unaware, OR...

a bunch of different explanations. The mother was arrested but that doesn't mean she's guilty. It is possible that after her arrest they will find out the details leading to this situation and the mother may be exonerated. Who's to say? We will have to wait and see.

Yes, birth control always comes up, and the woman's always blamed. There's always someone who says 'she should have/could have kept her legs closed.

Where is the person to say 'he should have kept it in his pants?' There is still a double standard and it's sickening to see it survives.

Fathers are equally responsible for the lives which they create. No woman falls pregnant by herself, and anyone who points the finger at a woman shames himself.

Where was the father of this child?

"Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to contact Sergeant Woods at the Temecula Police Department at 951-696-3070" Here you go Sergeant Woods, talk with the neighbors....

Linda, Maryland-915430 post 2.9 Thank you for your post. Thank you for getting on topic. You write: "the mother is still responsible." 40 year old Tracy Betts has proven to be "irresponsible" in a most gross manner; if she can even be called a "mother." How did these posts turn into a matter of "birth control?" What does that have to do with a starving, naked child? Betts gets arrested and charged with "child endangerment" while posing as a teaching assistant at the local elementary school. How horrific is that thought? She has been hired and entrusted with the lives and well being of other children, and paid for doing it with local and federal tax dollars.

Other posts will follow asking who and why didn't any one do this or that. "Where was the back ground check before she was hired?" Where is the biological father and why....? The same old same old. Then, the Superintendent of Schools will open his or her mouth with dramatic and ineffective actions they will take. Local "child social services" may make a statement....more blah blah blah. Eventually the lawyer for Betts will have a psychiatric evaluation done and she will be found to have been "suffering from depression," " bipolar," herself abused as a child, and a dozen other excuses for her actions, like the economy, or welfare services denied her the rights due to all "citizens" of the state of California.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, all across America little children are being abused. Most cases go unreported by the media. There is an interesting dynamic that is allowed us by this computerized system. One is to set "Google" alerts for ones choice of key words like "child abuse." I assure all of you who are reading this that you will fall out of your chair, pull your hair out, vomit, or all of the above by the sheer volume of daily news articles you will receive on this topic or any other that deals with the way the children in our great country are harmed.

I have found that there are a very few groups in America who do not have a political or financial motive working to save innocent little children such as this 12 year old girl. The first is Focus Adolescent Services, www.Focusas.com My wife and I have followed their good work for twenty years. In the words found in Mat:6 it says to do your good deeds and then shut the hell up about it. That is now what I am going to do.

It is very easy to preach abstinence. It is very easy to tell kids to not have sex. Yes that is easy, but it DOES NOT WORK. In the real world we should teach kids how to protect themselves. Girls condoms are 98% effective if used properly. Yes guys will tell you they don't like to use them but insist if you are going to have sex INSIST ON CONDOMS.

This parent was irresponsible and should be punished in the same humiliating way the child was, let them go naked and look through trash for food, don't give them access to clothes or anything else for the rest of their lives, torture them the way they tortured this girl. I guarentee they won't ever do it again.

Where do people find out about this birth control? From school's, that only teach abstinence, or maybe from their minister or priest? Discussing birth control with their parents would also probably be just as fruitful of a discussion. If they don't know that these things even exist, it probably won't help them too much.

Before judging or putting your political spin on all of this without credible evidence, I am glad this girl is safe. But it did remind me, except for age, of my ex running around the same area of California naked due to mental problems and drugs. For all of those that want to make this an issue of government paid birth control, you are pathetic to make this horrifying incident into a free birth control issue. Some of these people won't use birth control because they know they get a bigger (free) check for having kids.

Just read some of the details on other websites. Mother took the girl's clothes and shoes off so that she wouldn't get out of the car while mother was at work. That was mother's BMW she was found hiding in. There are so many things wrong with this scenario... You do not leave your child in a car while you work. You most certainly do not strip her naked while she is in said car by herself. All I could think was - naked 12 year old girl would make VERY easy prey for a pedophilic rapist/murderer of some kind. I assume the child had some mental problems b/c i'd like to think that a "normal" child would not get out naked and rifle through trash cans. However that does not explain why she was hungry??!! If the mom's driving a BMW, while the kid is inside hungry, you've got your priorities all turned around. There is no excuse for this lady. She should be behind bars and never allowed to work with children - much less chlidren with special needs. I shudder to think of the kind of treatment they'd get from her if left alone.

I am from the tidewater region of VA and we just put 3 employees (teachers and coaches) in jail for having sex and using drugs with their students. Look what just happened across the country with those fools that were running a complete kiddy porn business out of their public school, and now this?????? Did any of you know that public school employees are the least fired employees right behind federal employees. Our own kids cant read and write unless we as parents teach them. many of us lazy parents think that raising the kids (taking them to school, feeding them breakfast, lunch, and now even dinner in some areas is the schools job) It is not!!!! Check their backgrounds, evaluate their performance, and fire the lazy stupid ones that we expect to teach our children. This will weed out many of the weirdos on the pay roll. God bless this child, and to hell with her parents......

How the hell did a news story suffering from a definite lack of details become a case of "Oh, it's the mother's fault, she was neglecting/abusing her own daughter"?

People, there is NOTHING in this article that even implies that the mother is actually at fault. The girl was found during the day, apparently THE SAME DAY the police arrested the mother at the school where she works. This tells me that while the mother was working, she left her daughter at home -- and the article DOES NOT state whether the girl was left alone or in the care of a third party!

A 12 year old who is in control of their mental capacities would starve before they'd run around completely naked eating food out of trash cans. Looks to me like the child and/or the mother need a mental evaluation before the child is returned to the home.

There is not enough information to come to any specific conclusion regarding the mother or the child so far.

It was noted that the child was later found in a car where her mother had left her or something like that.

The mother was arrested. Not much info there...

What if they were living in the car? What if the child removed her clothes while waiting for her mom to return?

Just not enough info was given to come to any thoughtful conclusion imo.

Nothing was mentioned about the mother being a teachers aide....

                Hope they were not homeless....

Hopefully tomorrow will bring more info?

The mother should be tried for child abuse, and the girl should be placed in a foster home.

All of you who think this is good advertising for mandatory abortions for OTHERS and/or free birth control should be ashamed of yourselves. If you can't make a point without trying to take advantage of this young girl to make your case, your case has no merit.

Lynch, you were right on two levels:

You did in fact step on some toes, but I don't care.

You did tell the truth about of public school teachers and coaches, aids etc, being the least fired and most undesired. We hardly even scrutinize their backgrounds in any manner and I find that intolerable. These are the very same people that we as parents place the sacred bond of entrusting them with our children. The only ones that may be any worse of a deal breaker is those catholic priests. I also want to point out that the good ones and there are a few, deserve major pay raises but I think we need to overhaul the process and go on performance for pay only. To hell with tenure, that only breeds complacency.

And this happened Thursday?, Why is this just getting reported today?. God forbid we go the weekend without knowing who will be going to the Oscars or that Elizabeth Smart has married. Have news reporters taken us for being dumber or have they just become dumber?

Enough info to not 'go out on a limb and guess' would be nice...

Many different stories could emerge depending on the circumstances leading to this incident. If the mother left her 12 year old at home buck naked with nothing to eat without a thought to her welfare then that's a bad mom. Maybe they don't even have a home, though. Mom can't afford to send her to school or the poverty is too much to bear. I have seen kids that had to wear patched up hand-me-downs to school and get teased for it as if having to wear the crap wasn't bad enough.

So, I'm waiting to see if this is a cut-and-dry case of a bad mom neglecting her child, or a good mom with her back against the wall who was forced to make a bad decision.

bobmck is right. There really is not enough information. They don't say that she was suffering from malnutrition, like the other little girl who was found eating out of trash cans in Wisconsin last week. I know of cases of schizophrenia where an ill person could be found wandering the streets eating out of the garbage even when there was food at home. Maybe the child is mentally ill and her mom can't afford proper medical care or supervision? That is a possibility, and again, we don't know from the article.

I agree. We dont know if the child had mental illness, was acting out, or was neglected. We dont even know if there was food in the house she lived in or not. How can anyone make assumptions from this artical.

We are all so use to the immediate gratification of the internet age, no one waits for actual "facts". And the media is guilty of reporting on things BEFORE having the actual "facts", and the gullible BELIEVE!

Obviously we all haven't been reading the same story here. You say there aren't enough facts.

Here are some 'facts' here. She was trying to 'cover herself' with a 'car mat'. And digging bits of bread out of the trash.

While I am no liberal, I also take umbrage with you on your attack on MSNBC for reporting on this story at all. Any time a child is abused (and this child was to be reduced to have to rummage for food through the trash with no clothes on), that is 'news'.

Why you hating on bobmck? There is simply not much in this story to tell you anything about why the girl was running around naked. You can assume the mother had issues since the police arrested her, but who really know's? Don't you people believe in innocent until proven guilty? Maybe the girl is bi-polar or something. Poor reporting so back off bobmck, he was thinking the same thing I was, not assuming like YOU!.

I agree, there's not nearly enough information here. Why was she naked? Had she been abducted/sexually assaulted and ran away? Was she mentally ill? Did her mom lock her in their home without clothes or food? There are so many ways this story could go. I'm really less interested in why she was eating out of the trash and MUCH more curious about why she was naked. Unfortunately, eating out of the trash isn't THAT uncommon or difficult to explain (she was hungry). But the fact that she was naked is odd.

Opinion-wise, I'm trying to imagine how such a scenario occurs. Having been 12 and having raised one to 19 so far, I struggle to pin down a reasonable explanation, from the comic to the darkest. Personally, I was a bit wild at 12 tho' my son has been exemplary. I guess the first thing I thought is that all the clothing was in the wash....and the fridge was empty? At any rate, it sounds like she got clothed and fed fairly quickly, poor child.

Well one question we should ask is there a history of this type of thing from these people. And if this is the case, it's a horrible thing. My my feelings are get more info before passing judgment. Kids are very adept at manipulating the system. It's not like a teenager has never done anything horrible just to get their way. I can very easily believe that this girl is angry at the mother and just did this to get her into trouble. And before everybody blasts me for my opinion, make sure you've never encountered a situation where an angry teen didn't cry wolf because mommy and daddy grounded them, told them they couldn't see there boyfriend/girlfriend or any other reason that seems important to a hormone saturated teen.

According to what I read-- follow a link-- the mother took the gal when she went to work at the school and left her in the car naked so that she wouldn't go wandering. The school where mama worked was not far from where the gal was found.

I hope they take the gal from the mother and find out what is wrong with the mother. Evidently there must be something wrong with the girl-- maybe she is not much more than a child emotionally or mentally.

No family members? No support system? Maybe NOW there will be some kind of support system.

I wonder if the child was kept under wraps for all those years because of her mental condition.

Here we go with the "WAAA WAAA, there is not enough information" and the "This is not even a story". Here is a story...this MSNBC does very very little of its own reporting. This is a headlines compilation page summarizing the latest headlines from local papers. Maybe that is all that was reported. Would you like the girl's name? How about her adress? Or would you like the author of this piece to make up a fictitious resolution so that you don't lose any sleep over this wretched child. Obviously this is a Child Protective Services matter and needs to be properly investigated. Maybe if you actually cared about the child in the story rather than adding your vacuous comments to the void space that is the FR message board you would get off your phat lazy a$$ and find out (that is if you actually cared). Go and do a follow up story and get it printed in the editorial pages of the Riverside enterprise. Phucking lazy complaining Americans just want to sit around bytching and whining about nonsense on twitter and facebook. All this technology to help us connect and this has got to be the most disconnected generation to ever cop a squat in the nation's history.

Susie-the mother left her IN HER CAR so she wouldn't go wandering? We're lucky this wasn't a toddler who didn't know how to unlock the car doors from the inside and suffered some heat exhaustion. I'll agree tat it sounds like this child has a tendancy to wander but the nakedness part makes me wonder...why didn't the mother bring her inside and give her something to do or leave her with a neighbor?

Thanks for the link, Common Sense. That answered a lot of my questions. The girl's parents can afford a BMW and $15,000 bail, but they can't afford to feed their child? A 12-year-old girl should be in school, not locked in a car, without clothes, so she won't run away...Obviously her parents underestimated her, and the human spirit, because she left the car wearing just a mat...I hope her mom gets punished to the fullest extent, although the laws of our nation won't do her justice. In my opinion, we should shoot the bitch in the knee caps and let her bleed to death.

If you check the link in the story, it will take you to the original news article covering this story. In the original article, it states the mother "left the child in the car naked to prevent her from getting out of the vehicle while the mother was at work". It would have been much more clear if the person reporting the story here had added that piece of information to this article. Look at all the confusion and rhetoric created by just one tiny piece of missing information. It is a good example of how having all the facts before making a decision or judgment is so important.

My first thought was that the child might have autism or some other developmental/mental disability. My son is autistic and on a couple of occasions ran away because he was angry about not getting his way; I had to follow him in the car and then chase him down on foot. If I had not seen him take off in the first place, I don't know what might have happened. He is very high functioning, so he would not have gone out naked, nor would he have rummaged through the garbage. However, I know of kids who would. It will be interesting to read more.

This type of article does not require an opinion. Please learn the difference between an exposition and an editorial.

And it is ignorant to imply that just because the girl may be autistic, or mentally challenged, that the case is not one of neglect and endangerment. Whole facilities exist taking care of children with these problems. Those children are not naked in the streets, rummaging through trash. Retardation and autism are not legal reasons for lack of care.

Toni, good comment. People don't realize that developmentally/behaviorally challenged kids often have off-kilter thinking processes the rest of us take for granted. My neighbors autistic child once called the 800 number of an educational book company for help with homework while his mom was in the next room making dinner. The call center salesclerk traced the number and sent the local police to their home. Boy, were the cops pissed at the company when they found out the kid thought the "Need help, call 1-800...." on the back of his workbook meant he could call them for math answers. A couple of years ago, another friend's handicapped child called 911 one Christmas to get Santa's phone number. We're going to see more and more of all this stuff, given the alarming and rapid increase of autistic kids in this country, whether it is caused by environmental or medical issues.

i disagree about not having enough facts to call this neglect. If the 12 yr old was acting out or mentally ill she wouldn't have been trying to cover herself. She would have either wanted to be naked or she wouldn't have been aware of the reality of it. If she were properly cared for, she wouldn't be rummaging in the garbage for bread. If she'd been abducted and the mom didn't report it/her missing, then it's still neglect. If she'd just been sexually assaulted, she likely would have gone to a police station, a hospital or home and she wouldn't have been trying to find food. If the mom's back is against the wall, she could have gone to a shelter to at least get ONE set of clothing for her child. Simply put, there is plenty of information here, sparse as it is, and a reasonable thinking person can easily impute neglect. Political correctness has limitations. Call a spade a spade already and be done with it!

While I'm certain there is a major level of responsibility on the mother's part, I hope the child gets a psychiatric evaluation. Most 12 year-olds know better than to go running around outside naked.

Run around naked may be, but 12 year old girls normally don't eat of garbage cans. Sorry about the bad taste of humor, but frankly 12 year old girls tend to go off the deep end for a while. This parent looks like she is in really deep trouble. Of course she will probably get her child back and continue her wonderful parenting skills.

completely agree. there is definately alot more to this story. this girl is 12, her mom is teaching at school. why is she not in school (on a school day) to begin with? she has to have some sort of mental disability or maybe she was home sick. i know kids can run very high fevers and hallucinate (i've been on medical runs with children as old as 13 running high temps, doing some crazy stuff). not saying that happened here but it is a definate possibility.

All you had to do was click on the link in this story for more information.

Police said the girl’s mother, identified as Tracy Betts, works as a teacher's assistant at Vail Elementary School, which was within walking distance from where her daughter was found.

Betts had apparently left her daughter in the vehicle naked so she wouldn't get out of the car while her mom was at work, officials said.

Betts was booked into jail and later released on $15,000 bond. Her daughter was taken into protective custody.

Ok, that's nuts. The woman was so enslaved to her job for some bare financial security that she lost all notion of propriety with her child? More evidence of the safetynet at work?

Best guess I can come up with is the girl may have a severe case of Autism. That could account for the nudity and the eating from the trash.

                        Time will tell.

Peridot, people with severe autism have strict patterns that any deviation from would cause flare ups of temper. I can't imagine any child with autism would pattern themselves to eat day in and day out from random trash cans without someone in the neighborhood taking notice long before this and Social Services saying "Oh, it's okay, they're autistic." Autistics stick to schedules and preferences. Some objects and some types of food they won't even touch due to color or shape or texture-I can't think an autistic person would rummage through a trash can filled with every sort of material possible inside of it just to find something they like, considering they're focused on several different things at any given second, they wouldn't be able to locate one thing they wanted unless they had it placed before them at the right time.

My guesses are 1. The girl has been abused and it made her go bonkers. 2. The girl has disorders she got as a baby 3. The girl set up her mother to go to jail.4. CPS wants the mother to go to jail and get a felony so they slant the story to make the mother look bad. 5. All or most of the above. I have dealt with CPS and the kind of children mentioned in my guesses, as I am a fost-adopt mother. I know what I'm talking about.

HShaver --- You do NOT know what you are talking about! If you bothered to find the rest of the article you'd have read that this disgusting sorry excuse for a mum took her daughter's clothing and tried locking her in her BMW so she wouldn't leave while the mum worked in "Special Education".

*DISGUSTED* For one the fact that this insane @!$%# works with children who have disabilities is downright appalling, and for two what type of sick bitch would actually take a girl's clothing away from her and leave the girl in a vehicle while she was at work? I mean the girl could have been molested or raped or gods only knows what!

                        This is just so GROSS!

It might not be autism. Although rarer, childhood schizophrenia happens, as does mental retardation and other issues. We just don't know. It's seems very strange that a mother would leave a child NAKED, though, and if the story is correct, she admitted to that. But having been through a tragedy in my own extended family that made the front page, I know the press doesn't always get these things right. The paper may publish a small correction that few people see later on.

It is very difficult to find anyone to care for a child with severe issues of any sort. Maybe she was too sick to go to school and the mother couldn't take off work without losing her job. There have been cases like that before.

If the child has psychiatric issues she should not have been left alone. If the child was starving and had no clothes she did what she had to do to survive. Either way the parent is responsible. As the mother of a 12 year old, this story sickens me.

Agree totally, IF the girl had significant mental issues OR NOT, I'm thinking Mom does. Who in their right mind would leave their 12 year old daughter naked and alone in a car? Mom has some explaining to do.

Her mother put her in the car naked as a way of keeping the child from leaving. The child knew she was nude. Her mother withheld clothing from her because she hoped that her daughter would be too scared and ashamed to leave the car. But hunger forced the poor kid out to root around in the garbage while Mommy Dearest was eating lunch in the school cafeteria. If anyone has a mental issue here, it's the mother - not the child.

Devil, maybe her religion wouldn't let her use contraceptives. So she had a child out of wedlock. And yes, what about the father? Sounds like both the man and woman are unfit to be human.

Well, if your religion says not to use contraceptives, it probably doesn't look too kindly upon extramarital sex either. What do you think she said? Name one religion thata says 'don't use contraceptives' that also says 'keep your children locked up naked in your BMW'.

This type of behavior is more in keeping with those who worship materialism, and say thing like 'don't have children if you can't afford a Mercedes'.

The mother, and perhaps the father, should be in jail. The girl should be in a foster home.

I totally think we do not need to judge whom has a good enough set of skills to bear children. It's a slippery slope. If we do that, soon you'll see a throwback to Hitler's era, where people were sterilized that were unfit to bear children.

It's not a hazy line between "good parent" to "parent who leaves naked pre-teen alone in car as means of controlling behavior". Some people should not have access to children. That is a fact. This woman, based on her actions, has identified herself as one of those people. No slope to that.

This is sad, I would like to know what happened to this child or if anything was wrong with her..I would think most 12 year olds would go find help immediately rather than go naked looking for food. I'm sure this story goes a lot deeper and the parents scared this child into trying to survive. Hopefully the police question this girl and investigate thoroughly into their living situation.

Normal 12 year old would be contacting friends/family prior to those extreme. (Did you ever run away and went where?) The living situation, her mental capacity, all factors need to be looked at before jumping to conclussions. And why wouldn't the parents have contacted the police when she went missing? Maybe this was a ploy by a ruthless child to draw attention to herself and get her mother in trouble. This article is very vague and lacks reasoning. I am not defending the mother, just seems that this is VERY odd in the full perspective of child/teenage behaviour.

Normal 12 year olds would seek help, however, finding that she was locked in the car naked by her mother, so she wouldn't leave the car, leads me to believe that she wasn't being raised in a "normal" fashion. If this turns out to be a case of mental and/or physical abuse, a child of any age may be too scared to contact someone to seek help, and may not even have friends to contact to begin with. Also, being naked in a car with only a floor mat to cover her - there is no way she's walking somewhere naked to get help, and I'm pretty sure there was no cell phone left in the car with her.

I hope that this family finally get the help they need. She has a history of running away. It was all over the news a couple of months ago when she disapeare from her bedroom in the middle of the night. Everybody thought that she was abducted. She had just run way and had spend the entire night out, before calling her parents to came and pick her up. The police already know about her. They where the ones that pick her up the last time when she call her parents after she went missing. They need help, maybe she just needs medication and all this is driving her parents crazy.maybe mom just went cocoo after all her daughters acting out and finally snapped.

So sad no matter what the circumstances. I was living on the streets for a while in my teen years. It's a very scary ordeal. One night I found what looked like a good place to camp for the night. The cops saw my camp fire and came and told me several people had been found dead in this area. I didn't sleep well that night. This was in Daytona Beach.

California and Florida don't have the market cornered on bad parenting. Every state has a CPS agency, which wouldn't exist if there wasn't a need.

C'mon people. There are 311,000,000 Americans on the last Census. With a number like that, there will be all manners of strange and hateful and weird and horrible things happen, as well as all manners of compassionate and brave and loving and wonderful things happen.

I really don't think this is an indictment of America, of Democracy, and certainly not of California vs Florida. I think it's a weird and strange and bizarre anomaly, and obviously not the rule.

Clear proof that some people should not bear children.

The fact that they shouldn't have children isn't going to stop them from having sex. A clear example of why birth control should be legal and available.

FYI, planned kids get abused and neglected too. Often. This sounds more like there might be mental illness or other issues that apply to mother AND daughter. Just the stress of caring for such a child can leave a person unable to think straight. Maybe mom had taken a lot of time off at work and was afraid to take off any more, even though she had nobody to care for the girl. Not everyone has a support system of any sort. Was it even a school day? Schools today have all sorts of bizarre days off for "teacher inservice", etc. Mom's judgment seems lacking but she probably thought she had no other choice. Do you know how many parents of mentally ill children end up giving them to the state because they literally can't get treatment for them otherwise?

BTW, the fact that you "shouldn't have children" doesn't mean you are AWARE of that fact.

When you buy a BMW on the salary of a teacher's assistant, you don't have much money left for food or clothing.

The article said the girl was found in "a BMW". It didn't necessarily belong to her mother. I think the girl may have just been trying to hide and got into the first car she found that was unlocked.

Actually folks, after looking at NBC-LA, the FACT is that the 'so-called' mother did own the BMW (???) and left the kid naked in the car so she wouldn't get out... so it's not a comprehension problem, the facts just weren't well covered in this piece. Still - stories like this are truly awful that we have so many horrible parents out there - and this one is actually a teacher (assistant). Yikes. We are in trouble!!

It doesn't say the BMW belonged to the girl or her family. It just says they found the girl hiding in a BMW parked on the street.

Wow, this has got to be some sort of record. Almost every comment about this story is based on some sort of assumption :)

From this story where does it say the BMW she got into was a brand new $90,000 750Li. Maybe it was an old beat up 1976 BMW 2002? Maybe she broke into the car and was hiding? If it was the mothers maybe she got it was the only thing she got in the divorce...there are so many things it could be.

Why jump to conclusions from a shoddy piece of journalism?

For all we know, someone gave the mom her car, or she inherited it. People do give away cars to friends or relatives if they are moving overseas or don't need the money. Or it may have been very old. I once had a tenant who owned an old Mercedes and trust me, none of my tenants was rich! Turned out he paid something ridiculous like $300 for it.

Yeah that was crazy... Daddy was a little heated. My Dad would have used the bullets on me and saved the Laptop...

I was scared enough to see what my dad would do if I became such a brat I didn't do the crap the teen did.

This is what you get in a welfare state with no social mores and no individual responsibility amongst its citizens except to grasp at the government tit of entitlements.

You voted for it....you get it......

                                                      Sloppy,

I posted this reply above to a thread that unfortunately got collapsed (btw, this collapsing thing is getting ridiculous), but I wanted to repost as it applies just as much to your rant.

"Police said the girl’s mother, identified as Tracy Betts, works as a teacher's assistant at Vail Elementary School, which was within walking distance from where her daughter was found.

Betts had apparently left her daughter in the vehicle naked so she wouldn't get out of the car [a BMW] while her mom was at work, officials said."

Which begs the question: why wasn't the girl in school?

Hope the parent/parents gets stripped of their rights (if they are found to be neglegent) to keep her and the girl gets help (if needed). Wish there was more info to go off of.

What - you want to hear the full story and not jump to conclusions? Apparently you don't understand how the world of web comments works.

We are supposed to see the initial story, have no clue as to what happened other than what was "reported" by someone we don't know and have no background as to their prior accuracy and immediately jump to all sorts of conclusions and then tell everyone not only what happened, but why it happened and what should be done about it!!!

Beliefs such as yours will take all of the fun out of commenting on stories anonymously...

Is this child retarded and was her mother at work and left her home alone. I need to know more before I judge anyone on this.

Your daughter probably always had food and clothes in the house, too. I'm also guessing that the police never came and arrested you at your job, pertaining to your daughter's well-being either, eh?
