Police buy cemetery plots to block Josh Powell from being buried next to his boys

Photographs of Charles Powell, right, and Braden Powell are displayed during their funeral services in Tacoma, Wash., on Saturday.

A sheriff and his sergeant in Washington state have bought burial plots next to Josh Powell's boys in order to block family members from burying him next to them, according to a media report Wednesday.

"The bottom line is, Josh Powell will not be near those two boys," Pierce County Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Troyer said in an interview with a Seattle-area radio program called the Ron and Don Show.

Josh Powell's surviving relatives wanted him to buried at the same cemetery as the two sons he killed, the city manager in Puyallup said earlier Wednesday.

But that does not look like it is going to happen.

Troyer and Sheriff Paul Pastor used their personal money and funds from Crimestoppers Tacoma-Pierce County to buy plots that are on either side of the boys, according to a report on the radio station's website that was confirmed by Troyer on Twitter:

twitter.com

Crimestoppers is soliciting money on its website for the purchase of the plots.

"It's disgusting that a murder suspect would be buried next to his victims," Pastor said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Powell's relatives visited the public Woodbine Cemetery and selected a plot about 25 feet from the boys, City Manager Ralph Dannenberg told The Associated Press earlier Wednesday. They haven't paid for it yet, and any sale is being put on hold because the parents of Powell's missing wife have promised legal action.

"We don't have any rules or procedures regarding refusing plots to anyone," Dannenberg said. "We're going to wait to see what the outcome is in court."

Powell was a suspect in Susan Powell's 2009 disappearance from their home in West Valley City, Utah. He later moved with his sons to near Tacoma, Wash., to be close to his parents. On Feb. 5, he attacked his sons with a hatchet and set his rental house on fire, killing himself and his sons, Charlie, 7, and Braden, 5.

Cops: Josh Powell murder-suicide house was sham set up for social worker visits

The boys were laid to rest at Woodbine on Saturday. Attorney Anne Bremner, who represents Susan Powell's parents, Charles and Judy Cox, says she would seek a temporary restraining order to block Josh Powell from being buried there.

"For him to be buried near those kids is just unthinkable," Bremner said. "For God's sake, for them to lose Susan first, and then the boys, and now this? Just give these people a break."

Powell's sister Alina did not return an email from the AP seeking comment.

Meanwhile, Powell's father, Steve Powell, who is awaiting trial in Pierce County, Wash., on voyeurism and child pornography charges, filed a motion with the court saying he does not wish to speak to the FBI or other law enforcement about his son’s case or the disappearance of his daughter-in-law.

Mark T. Quigley, Steve Powell’s attorney, told the Salt Lake City Tribune that the notice, filed Tuesday, was common in criminal trials to protect rights against self-incrimination. It was prompted by a visit last week in which Steve Powell reportedly rebuffed FBI agents.

"It’s simply a statement to law enforcement that says my client doesn’t want to talk," Quigley told the paper. "That’s [Steve Powell’s] right. I don’t think belligerent has anything to do with it."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

.... if you wanted extra brownie points from the community, you should have told your pals at the court house to denied Josh Powell visitation when they had the chance.

And does it really make a difference that he is not buried next to his boys. They are dead! And other than the grandparents, we all know when people go to that cemetery to visit the graves of the boys, they will most likely walk over to see Josh Powell's too.

I'll give money toward it.

Susan Powell's parents should not be forced to endure the sight of the grave of the monster who probably murdered their daughter and definitely murdered their grandchildren, each time they visit the boys' grave.

If I had extra money I would contribute to keep that maniac from being buried ANYWHERE near those precious boys! Maybe someday, God willing, Susan Powell will be able to be buried in one of those plots! Josh Powell can burn in hell...which is where he probably is...for his sins against his wife and then his sons! A hatchet, he killed his sons with a hatchet! No parent DESERVES to be buried near their child when the commit that kind of horrendous act!

I hope Susan Powell and the boys were reunited in Heaven.

If they do bury that POS near the little boys they better make sure the POS grave has no marker....on facebook they are getting people together to dig him up if buried there, and take his POS remains to the nearest landfill!

Now that's a great idea.

I'm sorry, but these individuals are dead. What difference does it ultimately make if the @!$%# is buried next to his kids or not? But why not just save the money of burying the @!$%# entirely and just cremate his remains and scatter the ashes unceremoniously to the wind in some trash dump.

This isn't about the dead, it's about the living. I can honestly tell you that if that POS ends up anywhere near these kids I doubt his grave will go undisturbed.

And no, it won't be me involved but it doesn't take an Einstein to know the outcome if he is buried nearby.

Personally, I don't really care what people personally think about the cops actions. They felt it was appropriate, and they acted with some of their own money as well as some from the Crimestoppers fund. Good for them, I say. There's no way this 'person' could ever pay for his crimes if he were still alive, but at least he won't have the honor of being buried next to his victims (his children). They should put his remains in a box surrounded by thermite, and detonate it. The heat will destroy all traces of his body.

I also think his equally POS father knows something about Susan's disappearance, but plans to wait until he gets out (somehow) and then goes to hell in a blaze of "glory" like his son.

ruger-Thats a good question. Have wondered why the government and media so downplayed the disposal of Bin Ladens' body. Have a hard time believing it was to cause less uproar and possible repercussions.

Jo Ann---I think Josh Powells dad either knows what happened or was party to whatever happened to the boys mother. I also believe he'd love to torment police and the public with just enough info to suspect him but not enough to prove anything.

The poor ocean shouldn't have to be polluted with either of these mens (I use the term loosely) bodies.

He is probably being referred to a a murder suspect because the fire, etc is still under investigation. Even though we all know he is guilty, until the investigation is concluded it is considered suspect. Likewise, even though you film someone committing a crime, until the perpetrator is convicted in court by a jury of his/her peers they are still only allegedly guilty.

My compliments & gratitude to the quick thinking, kind officers who put in to purchase the adjacent plots.

Some of you are suggesting burials that are far too good for that scumbag. How about this - cover him with fresh blood and throw him into San Francisco Bay. The reason that Alcatraz was put there was anyone who managed to escape from that prison would have been eaten alive by the sharks in the water. That pile of you-know-what doesn't deserve anything better than that, than being thrown to the sharks.

(Google it for some interesting info.) A bottomless pit might sound like a good idea; but rumor has it that hole can bring dead things back to life. No one would want that to happen in this case.

It is not about the dead; it is about the living family members who will visit the grave. They will not want to see that mans' head stone next to that of those little guys.

It will be hard enough for them for many years to come, it would be even harder if that scumbags' headstone was visible to them at the same time or if they have to pass it to get to the boys. Hell, just knowing he is nearby will be hard for them.

Put yourself in their shoes, would you want to visit the grave of your grandchild and have to be witness to the mans grave who murdered them and your daugher (presumed) at the same time. I just could not imagine the pain they are going through and you suggest they suffer it for their entire lives?!

When accusing others of being morons, it is generally helpful to spell gesture correctly.

I think it is a fitting gesture. Josh Powell manipulated the system and protections designed to protect the innocent to murder his wife, expose his kids to a pedophile, and ultimately murder his own children. If these officers manipulate the system to ensure that living family members get some peace, more power to them.

While this man was clearly insane, and I agree to bury him next to his victims would seem obscene. It also seems to me, it is not our decision to make. I find it troubling that it is now it is up to the police, i.e. state who is buried where? This would seem something to be resolved by the families of the victims and any civil litigation arising from it. This seems a bit of a reach on the part of a state agency, through it's officials. As sad as this entire situation is, it is still not within the purview of the state to decide who is buried where. Even if they used their own money, it is still a reach. What else will a sheriff take upon themselves to decide for people?

The solution is to bury the boys with their mother, not the father.

In the case where the cops can't find the mother, then the State of Washington should provide the boys with a Foster Mother and bury them with her.

It is difficult to find the words to express my gratitude! This is what life should be all about! Helping people. Those living and those that have gone before us. The spirits of those precious little boys lives forever and they never need fear that man again! Thank you so much for this selfless act of kindness! The Pierce County Sheriff and Sergeant should buy the plots at the cemetery surrounding the Powell children's grave as well. He should be nowhere near the plots set up for Susan's remains when found, nor the boys.

Investigators are now trying to decipher the cryptic message taken from Powell's computer. It will probably tell them where Susan Powell's remains are hidden.

Every turn to this story ending is astounding. Very Bizarre Behavior. He is gone, but it still seems like he is alive. Pure Evil. I truly now believe people can be Evil. This is the most bizarre murders of an entire family ever.

He was one of the most craftiest murderers of all time, along with Jeffrey Dahmer, Gacy, and the rest.

The extended Powell family who are living are crazy. They are demanding he be placed next to his sons.It will not happen. We are all in this together, giving any donation to Crimestoppers from letting this happen.

Crimestoppers will be the beneficiary of our Good Deeds.

    Thank you.

"It's disgusting that a murder suspect would be buried next to his victims," Pastor said in a statement posted on Twitter."

The Powell case is a very sad case and in this incident I would agree with the sheriff as long as he and the other are acting in a civilian manner and not using their public positions as leverage with the cemetery authorities. but his statement does not always apply.

I once read a story of how an elderly couple decided to end their lives. One was dieing from lung cancer and the other battled another eventually fatal condition. So they decided to take their lives together, sadly. They had used up most of their savings, decided they had lived a full life, and wanted to leave something to their children and grandchildren however small it may be. They both wrote out letters explaining how they came to their decision and then the husband shot his wife in the head and then himself. They were buried together in a simple grave in a small town cemetery. Husband and wife, life long lovers, or murderer and his victim? What do you think?

Josh Powell was probably emotionally, sexually, and physically abused by his father. (No mention of his mother. Is she deceased or the same thing which is called living in denial?)

Most survivor's of abuse do not turn out like Josh.

This is another teaching moment which provides a good reason to look into things if you should suspect abuse of a child. Silence and denial causes more damage and does nothing to help any child being abused. If we are a country that loves our children, then why do we not act like it? The first step is to listen to our children; they should be seen and heard!

      Sorry KG, I strongly disagree.

Let's not forget that Powell's father was picked up for Child Porn and made the claim he had a sexual relationship with his (deceased) daughter-in-law. I pity Powell's mother for what she may have endured and for the tragedy that befell her grandsons.

This is a deeply disturbed family and a tragedy, the Sheriff's actions prevented an insult being added to the injury and probably prevented the commission of further crimes by an outraged public.

The Sheriff's motivations may not have been pure, he could have been seeking publicity, but regardless of that, he did the right thing under the circumstances for both the memory of the mother and her children and for the peace of mind of his community.

Powell lost any rights he might have had when he murdered his wife and children and then took the cowards way out for himself.

Yes, kudos to the crime stoppers for doing this. Glad to hear it. Regardless of beliefs or anything like that there is no reason the family has to be further reminded of the waste of life that was this man when they go to visit the graves of these two boys; just the fact they are having to go to a grave (instead of being able to see these boys alive in person) is more than enough of a reminder of the terrible events that happen. Like skip said above, no need to add insult to injury. Apparently on powells side the apple didn't fall far from the tree and I would question the thinking of the rest of his family why they think burying him next to these boys could even be considered a good idea in reality.

As far as that piece of $hit powell and his body goes, the nearest city dump should do fine for him. I like the woods and animals option but no need to be cruel to the animals and make them eat trash. I would also say burn the body and just flush the ash down the toilet but its not worth the time or fuel to do that either. Maybe that is wrong and who knows how the future would be for these boys if this played out differently (since the environment they were in was obviously not a great one), but I don't care, this man was a monster and a coward and that is how he should be treated. Lesson learned for all and not to be forgotten, yes, but for this coward himself to be discarded and long forgotten is what should happen.

      It is time

I know this comment won't be popular among the masses here, raging against this monster, but why isn't there more invective at the cops for not having locked up Powell months earlier? His story about the night of his wife's disappearance was patently ridiculous. Yet, the cops couldn't collect enough evidence to charge him in more than 2 years?

And they knew they were dealing with a psychopath, yet didn't accompany the social worker when she delivered the children on their last court-ordered visit?

Now they take the highly unusual action of buying cemetery plots around the children's graves? They collectively must have a guilty conscious.

@ Dan: That whole burden of proof thing. It's unfortunate, in hindsight, and had this man's rights been violated we very well could've averted a tragedy, but our legal system is setup to protect everyone from such things. Sometimes mistakes are made, and this is unfortunately one of those mistakes.

And they likely do have a guilty conscious, as I'm sure many good cops do feel when they feel that they know something, but cannot find the evidence to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Let's be honest here, there have been plenty of homicidal, psychopathic individuals who've eluded detection from the cops in the past. This only stings as much as it does, because it appears so blatantly obvious to us, the outside viewer. But when constrained by having to prove things to a judge in order to get a warrant, things are not so easy.

If your son in law hatched-ed and burned your grand kids and killed your daughter would you want to look at his grave? Could you afford to buy several plots to stop the process of having him buried next to his victims, probably not. Apparently Powell's father is a sick SOB and would probably enjoy the idea of his in-laws suffering being exaggerated. So what the family, being Powell's dad, wants is moot. Good for the police for buying the plots, it is a service to the living family as well as out of respect for those dead children.

People are not idiots for wanting to respect those that have passed which is what burial and funeral is to some. It's a last act of love and respect and way to deal with grief. So those ranting about people being idiots for caring about the bodies are just being willfully ignorant, trollish and rude.

Everyone is so happy with this decision, I guess I should be too. Without thinking too much about it, the gesture does seem to be pretty reasonable. But I gotta ask the question no one wants to ask.

Who is are we punishing with this gesture?

Josh Powell? Please. He's dead. He couldn't care less. Are the boys better off now? Sorry, they're dead too. They don't care either.

The only people that are being punished here are Josh Powell's siblings, who are INNOCENT of any crimes. Haven't they gone through enough? Josh Powell's one sister got her husband to go on National TV and basically say Josh was a selfish bum who killed his wife and kids. She is hardly a sympathizer to to her brother's despicable actions. If she and Josh's other siblings want Josh buried there, who are YOU, ME, OR ANYONE ELSE to get involved in a family matter? Doesn't ANYONE mind their own business anymore?

If Josh Powell's siblings are OK with this, then fine. Let the cheering continue. But if they aren't OK with it, then I think the people involved (doesn't matter that they're cops) overstepped their bounds. They want revenge against a dead guy, which isn't going to happen.

It's perfectly fine for you to think that Josh Powell shouldn't be buried near his sons. That's a normal reaction and who can blame anyone for thinking that way. But to judge Josh's siblings, WHO HAVE DONE NO WRONG, is not fair at all. That family deserves the right to bury their brother without ANYONE else interfering. It's their family's business and certainly NOT my business, your business, or the business of the people who meddled their way into a family matter.

Please tell me how outsiders taking actions that please the Cox's outweighs the wishes of Josh's siblings? They all lost loved ones in this tragedy. I don't see how outsiders pushing their will around to hurt one side of the family is reasonable. STAY OUT OF IT.

If the Cox's were the ones to purchase the plots, I'd be just as Rah-Rah as everyone else. My main problem with this is outsider's meddling in other people's business during the worst time of their lives. I can't justify it without knowing for sure Josh's siblings are on board.

Flame on... it's an emotional topic and I know it's coming.

It's not meant to "punish" anybody. For one, it'll protect the loved ones of those two boys from having to also see the grave of Josh when they're visiting the boys. Secondly, if people decide to vandalize and desecrate the grave of Josh Powell (which I'm sure is likely), the boys' graves shouldn't have to be in the line of fire.

Whether it's meant to punish anyone or not, it punishes Josh's siblings. One thing no one wants to admit is that Josh's siblings are also "the loved ones of those two boys". No one could care less how they fell. People only care about the Cox's, which I understand and consider reasonable, but still think it's unfair.

Everyone but me seems to think that Josh's siblings have no say in where they can bury their brother. I say they are innocent of their brother's horrible actions and deserve the same consideration as the Cox's.

Harold of the Rocks-- You make a good point, but the point they're making is that people feel it would be disrespectful and dishonorable to the memory of the boys if they were buried next to the man responsible for their deaths. It isn't about punishing anyone so much as it's about remembering the boys. And if he were buried next to his sons after he killed them you would be reading about the massive outcry here instead of the officers buying the plots around the boys so Powell can't be buried there.

        It's not punishing Powell's siblings.

If the Powell's siblings were forced to bury their brother somewhere other than their wishes, due to the actions of OUTSIDER's, then they were indeed punished.

It's all about "Susan's parents". They deserve consideration, no doubt. And so do the Powell siblings. They deserve EQUAL consideration. Again... my point is that I can't cheer along with all of you because it was outsider's that pushed their will.

Mr. Smith... who can blame you for thinking that way? All I'm saying is you (nor anyone else) has the right to push that view on the Powell siblings. It's their brother and they should have the right to bury him without worrying about outsider's meddling.

@Harold of the Rocks - As someone who has lost a loved one to murder, let me give you perspective from the victims side. My beautiful cousin was murdered by her husband. He then turned the gun on himself. It came out after the murder-suicide that he killed her because she was filing divorce papers after she caught him molesting her daughter (his step-daughter).

His family then had the audacity to try and bury him in the adjacent plot. So for the rest of their lives, the kids she left behind will forever have to see him buried next to their beloved mother. How do you think it would've felt for her kids to visit their mom and see him next to her? For many people, visiting a loved one at their buriel spot is a way connect and find peace. There's no way that can happen when a murderer is buried next to his victim! Fortunately, her family was able to get a court order barring her murderer from the adjacent plot.

I commend these officers for doing what they did. If Powell's family had any disregard for the victims, the officers wouldn't even have had to do what they did. His family should've had the good sense to keep him as far away as possible.

Well done on the part of the officers. Nice to see that they care. Hopefully they are holding the spots for the maternal grandparents or perhaps the mother will be found someday and able to rest next to her sons. Josh Powells family would be better off if the either cremated his remains or buried him in another cemetary. Not because I have ill will towards them but the son doesn't deserve their concern or the honor of being next his children. I know the family is greiving for a man whos' life went terribly wrong and ended by his commiting a horrific crime. Yet the family remembers the baby, little boy and the young man he could of and should have been and it hurts them in many ways. If they come to the same cemetarty as the boys to visit Josh there may be negative consequences, hassling, heckling for being a murderers family etc.. which isn't fair as Josh and Josh alone murdered these children.

Although I have sympathy for all involed (Cox and Powell families). I strongly feel that having Josh Powell buried next to or in the vicinity of the boys he killed is inappropriate and I truly hope the Powell family reconsiders so that maybe all can find peace.

Who is are we punishing with this gesture?

        Harold of the Rocks,

The decision is right because it symbolically and forever takes away Powell's control over the family he brutally murdered.

I read nothing in the article that hinted to me that this is a punishment of any kind. It doesn't even seem to be directed AT Powell's family or even to Powell himself, but rather as a way of honoring the memories of those little boys. Powell's family certainly isn't being punished just because they can't see their son's gravesite next to the boys. The cemetary will bury his body; his family will be able to pay their respects any time they choose. I have a lot of sympathy for one of Powell's sisters as she was convinced of her brother's guilt over his wife's murder and she must be so very, very upset over the boys' murders now as well.

You call the police officers and Crime Stoppers outsiders? How so? The police officers have been involved in every aspect of this story for over 2 years. In the interviews I've seen, they are beside themselves over the tragic murders of a young mother and her very innocent and trusting boys at the hands of someone who professed to love them. They've become close to the family and I can only imagine how disgusted they felt upon learning of the posibility that Powell could be buried next to those children.

Crime Stoppers is dedicated to aiding victims and is privately funded; they can designate their funds in any manner they feel is appropriate. This was the very last act the organization could do to give comfort to the family of Powell's victims.

I can't imagine the pain that the grandparents would endure knowing that each time they visited the children's graves meant seeing Powell's gravesite as well.

Powell's family may have a wish or a hope that he be buried next to his children but I strongly feel that the hopes and wishes of Susan's family trumps them. Knowing that the graves on either side of the children are no longer available to Powell means that if Susan's remains are ever found, she can be buried next to them; something I'm sure will give comfort to her family.

This is not about Powell, or punishing his family in any way. By all accounts, they loved Susan and the boys very much. As a Christian, I believe those boys' souls are in heaven with their mother's. The real punishment is reserved for Powell and comes from a higher power...it has nothing to do with the actions of the police officers or Crime Stoppers. Bless them for what they've done.

You call the police officers and Crime Stoppers outsiders? How so?

They're not family. Simple as that. When it comes to burying your brother, no outsider should be making decisions that interfere with that. It's a family matter, pure and simple.

Again, this isn't about the police or Crime Stoppers. If a bunch of baker's and their baking club did this, I'd feel the same way.

If the police and Crime Stoppers did this at the request of the Cox's, and wouldn't have acted on their own, I'm ready to pick up the pom poms and cheer along with the rest of you.

Not one of you made a point I disagree with. Until you say the grandparents deserve more consideration than the Aunt's and Uncles. When you go there, it's hard for me to understand. The aunt's and uncles shouldn't be punished for the acts of their brother. He punished them as much as he punished the Cox's, but no one seems ready to admit that.

It is true that his siblings are also the loved ones of his victims. They were however, not representing the children when they tried to by the plot near the kids. They were representing a baby killing scumbag who also killed his wife (probably with help from his dad).

The dad's lawyer (another lower lifeform who who got rich freeing killers and child molesters) basically just admitted that his client had something to do with the mom being killed. He does not want to talk at all for fear of self incrimination. The lawyer knows he did it. He will still do his best to free another killer to kill and molest again. he should just whisper a location to somebody so they can burry their daughter.

The police officers were showing respect for the feelings of the grandparents. As to the siblings of the "father," who murdered these boys, please note that they were not the relatives who had custody of these boys. Certainly, the feelings of the family members who had custody should be given priority. I do not know the financial situation of the grandparents, but would not be surprised if they did not buy the plots themselves because after expences of burying their grandsons, they couldn't.

Personally, if I had a sibling who murdered his own children, I would not be burying his body next to his children, I would scatter his ashes in the county dump.

        Harold,

Your definition of outsiders then is different from mine. I (perhaps you too?) have no connection to the families thus are truly outsiders. Again, NOT allowing Powell to be buried next to the boys is not a punishment.

How do you feel that Powell's family deserves more consideration that Susan's family? You seem very sympathetic to what's transpired and maybe even feel yourself that Powell doesn't deserve to be buried next to the boys. I stated before that Susan's family's wishes trumps those of Powell's family but I didn't indicate why. I didn't think it needed to be stated but here's my best effort:

Each family had identical losses but one family's member is the direct cause of all the pain. In order to not contribute an immeasurable amount of additional pain to Susan's family, the police officers and Crime Stoppers came to a decision that they felt was appropriate. Punishing Powell's family would have been something akin to denying him burial there at all. Powell will be buried and his body will be somewhere near the boys. His family will not be unduly discomfited or inconvenienced. His family can visit him whenever they like and simply walk a short distance to visit the boy's burial site.

Any amount of additional pain that Powell's family might suffer pales in comparison to the amount of pain that Susan's family will suffer were he to have been allowed to be buried next to the boys. Thus, punishment is off the table and compassion wins out for Susan's family.

Jolie - "Fortunately, her family was able to get a court order barring her murderer from the adjacent plot."

That is a relief - if not, your cousin's family should have broken the stone with a sledge hammer and dumped it in the bushes - continually, if replaced. So sorry for your family's loss.

I like Susie's notion - cremation, pasture or landfill for these murdering selfish beeps.

I can just see his grave, IF he is buried in the same cemetery, peed on, spit on. Sure, let his judgement be somebody other than me. But I would bet his grave would never be left alone.

If the bastid that murdered my sister (her husband) was to die in prison and his family wanted to bury him anywhere near her, you can bet your sweet azz that I will be there everyday laying on the spot that he wanted. No grave digger is going to move me out of the way! I'm sure that my nephew would be there with me. Cemetary's should be peaceful and a place of refelction and memories. You shouldn't have to think about their last chilling moments on earth. Burn him then put him in the trash!

Harold - you make some valid points but don't forget, no one is saying the family on the powell side can't visit these boys either. They just don't won't be able to put this monster next to the grave's of these little boys. Saying it is a punishment is a real stretch if you ask me. They can still bury this trash somewhere just not here and will just have to go to two separate sites. I'd say in light of everything this is more than an acceptable trade off if it does have to be looked at as someone getting punished, which again I would call a stretch.

Really!!! ... spend the money on catching crooks instead of pandering to emotional feel good expenditure. I can understand if the family does this sort of thing. Not cops. Not on taxpayer funds. I dont care a hoot if they used their own private funds, but not on taxpayer money.

It does to the surviving family of the boys. Try and view it from their perspective. They don't have the body of Susan to visit or mourn over. They have the boys and if every time they went to the cemetery, their eyes fell across the grave of the man who destroyed their entire family's future, yeah. I can why.

The boys still have grandparents (Susan's mom and Dad) that may want to visit their grandson's plots. It would add even MORE insult to injury to see that freak Powell buried near or next to the boys.

BTW, The Powell family must be the most dysfunctional group of screwballs to walk the planet. Dad's a perv, son is a murderer, and one of Josh's sisters said last week she "understood" why Josh killed the boys since he couldn't see them...WTF?!

How about having those who call it a wasted expenditure of taxpayer dollars, actually read the article. Crime stoppers earmarked funds donated by the public specifically to aid in the purchase of those plots. This did not come from Crime Stoppers funds, which I do not believe is run off taxpayer funds. The rest of the money came from the two law enforcement officers. So for all the yahoos out there saying who cares if he is buried there and why use taxpayer money, here is something to ponder: 1. Read everything before you make dumb ass factless comments. 2. No individual in the history of man deserves to rest eternally next to the monster who took their life. These two babies were butchered by their selfish ass father, who more than likely also murdered their mother. Whether you believe in the afterlife or not, that in itself is an affront to the memory of those children and the remaining un-insane family members should not have to see his headstone next to theirs. Period.

I guess that the people asking why taxpayers money was being used are jumping to confusions (I am using the word I want to). The money from Crime Stoppers is donated, of course. The officers that used their own money are the ones that, by a long stretch of logic, are using taxpayer money, since their salaries are paid by taxes. I AM IN NO WAY AGREEING WITH THE ONES COMPLAINING ABOUT USING TAXPAYER MONEY! I know it is not. Kudos to these officers and to Crime Stoppers.

Mercury-Not even by a long stretch. Once those officers receive their paychecks it becomes their money to do with as they please for services rendered. ONce its their money wether their related to the boys or not they have every right to donate cash for the gravesites if they want to. Whoever says different is just plain disrespectful.

To answer your question - yes, if one of my parents killed me, I would still want to be buried near them. Maybe that is unpopular by most, but I know that if my parents killed me it would be because of a mental illness. I'd still love them though, and would still want to be near them even in death. I think its terrible that the cops did this. If the grandparents wanted to buy those plots first, then fine. But to buy it just to deny it to someone else is wrong.

                Dicerotops-

Those who have never actually faced loss and tough decisions in life generally know exactly what they would do in a situation, and it is usually the bravest and most generous, most forgiving option. Every cub scout will be a war hero, and every altar boy will be the pope. It must be a great reassurance to be that certain about the strength of one's own nature.

You're right, I was only thinking about it from the dead persons perspective. I didn't consider relatives visiting the grave site. Do people still do that?

However, if I'm dead why would I care where or even if I was buried. The dead have no feelings, they have nothing. They are dead.

What on earth was his family thinking to even contemplate burying him there? The only family member that should be buried with those boys is their mom when we find her. That father should be cremated and his ashes spread on a dung pile.

Betty, I think that was the # 1 reason the police bought these plots in the first place. As I understand it, their mother's family already has their plots purchased.

IMHO the police bought these plots with the idea that if they find their mother's body, she will be buried next to them. Or their maternal grandparents will be with them.

No matter what, this story is effing tragic.

Mili, what the guy did to those little boys was pure selfishness - evil. I doubt that a loving God would agree with Betty and if so we're all screwed.

bigfinn: The words of Jesus states, as follows:

"It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend (cause harm to) one of these little ones." Mark 17:2

Oh, and in regards to dunghills, check out King Nebuchadnezzar's decree in Daniel 3:28-29. They used 'em a lot in those days. :D

So you don't think a loving God would punish those who harm HIS children? That would make Him a lot like those poor boy's dad-pure evil.

I believe those boys are in Heaven with God, and I have no doubt that man killed his wife as well. They are no longer hurting, but their grandparents are. I am sure his siblings are hurting too, but it is selfish of them to want to bury him next to the boys. They should choose another location, so all involved can visit either grave in peace. <3

Nah, they need to give his ashes a burial in space. And by that, I mean: Aim. For. The. Sun.

He clearly wasn't the father of those boys, just the sperm donor. No rights for him.

good for the cops to make sure those boys final resting place is not tarnished by winding up having their killer next to them even if he was their father. for after what he did to those kids he does not deserve to be buried with them at all. he lost that right when he killed them.

Not a surprise that gramps won't talk to the FBI or anyone else. He knows exactly what happened to Susan but he is also getting too much satisfaction from letting the Coxes suffer. He is a POS just like his son. As for Josh, put him in a landfill where he belongs.

Landfills are already overfilled with rotten putrid garbage. And a landfill would be too good for his remains. Interesting to know what good old granddad really knows. Only a sadistic creep would keep Susan's family from finding her remains so she could be buried next to her children. Kudos to Pierce County Sheriff's Office and Crimestoppers.

"Why does this story state "...murder suspect would be buried next to his victims"...? He is not a murder suspect in regard to those boys. He IS the murderer. New editor please."

In fairness, that was a direct quote by the sheriff, who undoubtedly knows the law well -- because the investigation into the boys' murder is still technically ongoing, if the sheriff referred to Josh Powell as anything other than a suspect, it could provide the Powell family ammunition to claim bias or some such nonsense. I'm glad the sheriff is being very careful.

Please be aware that we must be politically correct, regardless of any situation or condition! Why, even Hitler is probably still classified as a suspect! We allow Islamic people to immigrate to our nation, even though they plan to murder us all, as soon as they get power. They advocate the overthrow of our government and replacement with sharia law, although constitutionally, this is considered treason, punishable by death. Yet, we have a warped and peculiar view of "freedom of religion," which we use to allow these present and future murderers and advocates of murder to settle in our country. Political correctness rules now! Common sense is no longer applicable!

That man was going to murder those boys no matter what because he was a freakin' psycho who couldn't deal with the fact that he couldn't have everything in life go the way he wanted it to. He'd already murdered his wife. There was nothing that would have changed this tragedy other than the time and place that it happened.

Police are not mind readers. There was no legal reason to keep the boys from their father. What would you have had them do?? Vigilante justice?? Maybe if your so concerned work on the level of family services and try to get some of the rules changed so that maybe these boys could have been better protected from the man that likely killed their mother and did so horribly murder them. Did Josh Powell have to undergo any psyche eval in order to get the supervised visits???

Isn't that essentially what this is? Post-morten vigilante justice? It appears, at least to me, that the rationale is something along the lines of "since we can't punish him, we'll just punish everyone he knew or was related to".

It's not about the deceased. It's about the maternal grandparents not having to see the grave of the pig who murdered their grandchildren, and most likely, their daughter.

Why do you insist on calling the man mentally ill? He was on the verge of getting his kids back, before that porn describing incest with your own children was found on his computer. The Judge halted proceedings and ordered him to have a psycho-sexual evaluation that included a lie detector test. I think that lie detector test was what he feared, he was afraid of the questions he might be asked, he feared he would never pass. Being selfish and evil he decided to take his kids in a permanent way from people who loved them, controling to the last. Then too, there was probably the fact that his children were starting to remember "Mommy was in the trunk" during that last "camping" trip. Kids are smarter than you know, these kids were 5 and 7; they would put it together, they would know what he did, and he would "lose" them anyway because they might come to hate him and also, perhaps tell their story to the police. No, he didn't kill these children out of love or because he was deranged. He did it as a last act of control over his family especially over his more than likely dead wife. Evil.

The only thing i can see is preventing the the powells and his wifes family from committing more murder against each other! Why was this even necessary really, so no one spits on his grave. He doesnt deserve the honor? Want to put murderer on his tomb stone? They are already gonna try that no matter where it is. Spend our tax dollars on something else you dont need to buy the plots to prevent his burial there, how stupid is this?

Just like funerals are for the living - not the dead, so too are burial plots. This is "the last resting place" for these innocent children. If you were a living relative, how would you like to go visit their grave site and have to see a headstone announcing the proximity of their murdering narcissist of a father?

I think these police officers showed amazing compassion.

It's no longer an issue IF tax dollars were or were not used to purchase plots it's the mere implication that the police have taken an Official Stance that has made people sit up and take notice. Even the tiniest hint or slightest preponderance of in-propriety that something could have been done incorrectly leaves them open to speculation. They've tripped head long into a civil situation. Let's hope they can bow out gracefully. NOW It just might have to be tax dollars that sorts it out. Hopefully the right people can get together and talk this out before someone starts asking questions OFFICIALLY. All the bitter disdain and hatred between strangers on this forum will in no way help prevent this from occurring again. I derive no pleasure in asking everybody here if this happens to someone next week in some other state will we all jump right back on line and scream scornful hurtful remarks at one another? Have we learned nothing at this point. This vine really could be a very therapeutic and helpful tool. Sort of like massive grief counseling if everybody would take a deep breath and regroup. While venting is helpful verbal assault is not. The Cox family would not view this as support for their family. I'd be ashamed for them to see most of this. What some of you are saying you can't possibly mean. If you were to do the things you're describing your heart would never recover. I wish this had played out differently. This is a fight for the Cox family to fight. Anymore assistance should be kept quiet private and anonymous. Sadly, the eyes of the world are poignantly focused on this police department. More caution must be exercised in assisting the Cox family from this point forward. They've had enough. I believe the police were motivated by genuine love and did this with sincere intentions but things have a way of spinning wildly out of control when the police and media are together for more than a millisecond. Add on top of that a public that suspects ALL law enforcement to be biased and chronic benders of the law. Not everybody out there can take the bullying being perpetrated here. The incidence of bullying is occurring at an unprecedented rate across this country. People are dying because of hurt feelings, misunderstandings and obscure paranoid thinking. What does it take for US as a people to open our eyes to the dismal place we are creating for ourselves? Is it a crazy idea to put a couple of grief counselors on line to help people readjust their thinking when something like this happens? Maybe lots of therapists would consider doing this as a public service. Most forums have moderators anyway. I don't know what the answer is but nothing will ever change if we allow our hearts to turn to stone. We are living in a time of sensory overload. We are bombarded daily with horrific events WORLD WIDE Live on TV. Nothing imagined. It's all real and it's all traumatic. It is numbing us as a people. "GLOBAL HYPER TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER" says Me. Yes I made that up but the point is we need one another. If nothing else, can we please just stop ripping each other apart before our words end up killing someone or getting someone killed. This is just to much for a lot of people. My condolences to those suffering through this tragedy. Sorry so chatty. I'm upset too.

If one of my cousins murdered his two sons, I wouldn't even claim his body, let alone bury him next to his sons.

If he was my son I would let the government bury his @ss in paupers field or have him cremated and flush him down the toilet. The cops buying the plots is a good symbolic move. But if they have him cremated they can spread the ashes on the graves without anyone knowing.

And God will hose them off! I agree, he should be creamated, cause I can only imagine what the family and friends of these darling murdered kids would like to smear on the monster's grave...

I could be wrong, but I'm thinking that POS pretty much already cremated himself, no?

If not, I hope what's left of his crispy miserable remains are chopped up into little pieces by a hatchet (let the Cox's have the honors), completely reduced to ashes at a celebratory bonfire (guests of honor = the Cox's), and spoon-fed to casey anthony until she chokes on them.

all i can say is good for that kind family of cops that bought those plots i think that is great because after you kill you own children you lose all you rights and any way it should be a law against that why should those children have to carry on suffering even after death i think that the courts should have a rule about this kind of thing and they should even have a cemetery just for criminals as well so we would not be mixed together with these horrible people. And good luck to the COX'S may you win in court all the best to you.
