A neighborly dispute over dog poop turned deadly in the Tacony section of Philadelphia.
It happened just after 4 p.m. Tuesday on the 6500 block of Torresdale Avenue. Tyrirk Harris, 27, is accused of killing his 47-year-old neighbor Franklin Manuel Santana, according to Philadelphia Police.
Cops say Santana confronted Harris over his dogs.

"A German Shepherd and a Chihuahua -- these dogs were running free," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. "There were dog feces on several of the neighbor's yards. That's what led to this particular confrontation."
Police say Harris then pulled out a 9-mm handgun and shot his neighbor several times, striking Santana twice in the neck.
"He didn't run," said one witness. "He stood there, shocked that he did what he did."
Harris at one time was licensed to carry a gun but had it revoked at some point, according to investigators.
The shooting was apparently the boiling point of an ongoing dispute.
"We believe this is not an isolated incident," said Small. "There have been arguments over these dogs in the past."
Neighbors say the victim left behind a wife and a 2-month-old baby.
"It's a shame," said one neighbor. "It's a shame that our world has gotten so bad like this."
"There's no need to die over a dog," said another neighbor. "That's ridiculous."
Harris was charged with murder early Wednesday.

He wasn't obeying the laws to begin with, so this is just another case of a criminal who did not respect the law or other living beings and killed because it suited him. No law would have stopped this because he wasn't following the laws in the first place.
Part of his sentence should be to clean up dog crap all around the city for the rest of his life.
"More proof that guns don't kill people." Actually, they do...people with guns kill people using a gun. If he hadn't had a gun to whip out so quickly maybe his neighbor would still be alive. Of course, he could have tried to beat him to death....but the other guy may have had a chance to get away.

Lots of Americans are firmly convinced of their right to let their dogs go wherever they like, poop wherever they like, and bark whenever they like for as long as they like. If you confront them over it, they get out-of-proportion mad (a bit like talkers at the movies when you ask them to shut up). Add to this attitude a gun and a confrontational neighbor and I'm not surprised it went this far.
People have been shot over less.
Look people, if you want to own a dog, fine, but pick up after your dog and don't let them run loose. Be responsible. I get people walking their dogs in front of my house and just let the dog crap in my grass and do not pick it up. That has got to be one of the rudest things someone can do. Lowlifes.

In complete disregard to the Geneva Accord's prohibiting the killing of civilians, US Army assassination squads have been killling civilians in Pakistan and Afghanistan. US Paramilitary force is trained to kill civilians at home where regular army soldier is prohibited from doing (with the exception of Kent State U).
I had to drag my neighbor to court over their dog who kept crapping in our yard. This is after telling them for months it had to stop. Same neighbors who had police called on them for loud music in our neighborhood, and putting tables in the street that blocked traffic for their yard sale. Some people are hard to get along with, some people are a nuissance, and then some people are so aggravating, they don't do anything UNTIL you get the law involved.
My hope is that they finish themselves off soon. They're over 50, obese, and chain smokers. The husband is on dyalisis and still drinks. Oh, and he pulled the old 'cane' trick in court, while the next day he was trimming his yard with electric hedge clippers. Can't happen soon enough....

I would rather fight someone with a knife than someone with a gun, any day. Chances are, the guy with the gun couldn't win a fight with the 47 year old man. That's why he used a gun.
Its probably best to call animal control on these cases. Let them come and talk to the home owner. You can remain anonymous.

I have a few neighbors like that in my townhouse community there are signs posted that you are to pick up after your dog. I got into it with a couple of people about and it's just pure laziness not to pick up after your dog when you are walking it nobody wants to step in dog poop and that's what did it for me. After i reminded of their ignorance and laziness they started carrying poop bags. That is very sad what happened to this person all because of ignorance and laziness and a punk who deserves what he gets anybody can shoot a gun!!
Again, you liberals pull that crap out of your ying-yang. I will take my chances with a guy that has any other type of weapon over a gun.
People look at this logically. A guy who kills over this is obviously quite the unstable fellow. He redoubtably would have found other ways to kill or cause mayhem even without a gun.

Thanks to the interpretation of the 2nd amendment this man had a gun when he most needed it. Just think how terrible this situation could have turned out if he didn't have a gun. The neighbor would have continued to make a nuisance of himself by complaining about dog sh*t. Satisfaction just before the happy hour cocktails.

People know they should clean up after their dog, especially if its someones private property. Instead of shooting this person, do what I do, shovel the poop up and then place on that person car/property/front door etc..
Next day that person should get the hint. Works like a charm. Its not violent and should make the person think twice about not picking up their dog's poop.
A child without a father, a wife without a husband...and a dog without an owner, who will likely be in jail for at least the rest of the dog's life. Poor doggie.

By reading the article and the responses I thought I was in two different vines. Either there are a lot of people with poor reading comprehension or the article is written wrong. I had to read it twice as I thought I the dog owner was the killer. But anyways, where is PETA on this one. I love dogs, but hate dog owners, same goes for guns. You seem very angry about MSNBC reporting this story. I re-read the article just to make sure I didn't miss anything, and surely I didn't see one single pro or con argument on guns. Is it your contention that they only report stories that bolster your point of view? I think there are plenty of other sites that cater to that. You may be happier going over there for your news.

May I ask WHY we are not allowed to make this a gun rights/ gun control issue? I mean, a gun WAS used by someone who WAS NOT supposed to have a gun. So then, if dogs are invading your yard, leave little "green water bowls" in your yard. The kinds filled with anti-freeze. Problem solved.
If you have a problem with a neighbors dog and they refuse to do anything about it use this simply solution. Throw their dog a treat full of crushed up acetaminophen(tylenol). Their dog will no longer be a problem and they'll have no idea what happened.

My neighbor shot my dog who got out ONCE after her dog was in MY yard repeatedly crapping in my yard constantly. She had an ex-husband who is/was a judge. Guess who got the case when it came up? Oh yes... he didn't bother to state that. What a mess it turned into. The dog was eventually turned over to the Humane Society because THEY refused to build a fence to contain him. Point being, I did it the right way. I don't punish the dog for the owners bad behavior!!!!

I have owned guns for most of my life and I've never shot anyone. My father taught us gun safety at an early age. We hear about young kids shooting a sibling or a friend accidentally because they thought the gun was a toy. That would never happen in my home, because my guns are locked up in a safe.
My great uncle shot and killed 4 escaped convicts back in the 60s. He was home sick from work and the armed intruders broke into his home. When he told them to drop their guns they shot at him. Luckily he was a better shot. What would have happened if he had not owned a gun?
It is really a shame a man was shot by a nut with an illegal weapon, however that's not a good reason to ban guns.

For those who are going to use this as a "Get rid of the guns" excuse, remember that guns will ALWAYS be sold on the black market to the bad guys. Taking guns away from the public means that the good guys have no hope when the bad guys break into their home. While the weapon of choice may be a gun, there is a LOT of people that don't shoot people even though they have a gun. You will think about this the day they pass legislation banning guns and you get held up and have no way to defend yourself. Illegal guns are sold all over the place, why would that stop if a law passed banning guns?
If guns were not so easy to get, this guy might not have had a gun, and then he'd be in jail for punching his neighbor in the face-- not for killing him.

There is obviously a very simple answer for this. After completely abolishing guns in the US, we need a federal institution setup to search every public and private location in the US to search for guns and have them destroyed (except of course for military and law enforcement). Then close off all borders to prevent the flow of future guns into the country. Then and only then, all will be peachy.

I'm appalled at how many people don't understand the article and just who was killed and why. I also don't understand why people find it necessary to make jokes about the crime in their posts. You know, none of them were particularly funny or original. I used to have a housemate that was the epitome of Irresponsible Dog Owner. Large, gregarious, friendly, badly trained. She REFUSED to clean up after him when she walked him -- it was 'just too nasty,' for her to pick up his poop. So, she'd walk him over a couple of blocks and let him go on someone else's lawn.
One of the annoyed homeowners followed her back one day and found where she lived and (most important of all!!) which car was hers. They left her a bag of poop in the car and wrote 'CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR DOG!' on her windshield. In poop.
She was outraged -- how dare they do that?!
I was less than sympathetic -- I was tired of going out to the yard and finding piles of poop everywhere. She started cleaning up after the bagful in her car though.

Years ago I bought a house in Phoenix and I had the only grass lawn in the area (mostly desert landscape) and there was a woman down the street who would bring her dogs all the way up to my yard to do their business.
I asked her to stop letting her dogs (long leashed) do that on my yard. She also became upset and responded by asking "where are they supposed to go?" Like it was her right to use my grass.
I followed her to her house and the next day drove up with ten huge bags of green fresh horse crap from my stables and deposited it all over her yard and porch.
When she came out I explained to her that she was correct, where did I expect her poor little dogs to go besides my yard. Since fair is fair she could use my yard anytime she wanted to & and I in turn would deposit in her yard.
I never had the problem again.
Ahhh, now there is justice the way justice deserves to be handled among ourselves! No violence, no screaming matches. Just using our wits!

As a dog owner myself, I know how annoying it is to have dog $%# on the bottom of your shoes. Especially when that crap isn't even from your own pooch. A little empathy can go a long way and might've saved the man's life in this article. Too bad the gunner didn't have the strength to see the situation from such a perspective.

I had a dude walk his dog and @!$%# right on my driveway, he tried to walk away with me standing right there. I said "excuse me your dog just crapped on my driveway" and he said "I don't have a bag" before i could offer to get one for him he simply scooped it up with his hands and walked off, friggin nasty but whatever.
Moral of the story is give respect to get respect, people will kill over anything, especially lack of respect. Allowing your dogs to crap over peoples property is major disrespect.

See, it was the murderer's dogs who crapped on the other guys lawn. Apparently all the time. And when the guy complained, the dog owner shot him in the neck.
A little cayene pepper on the sidewalk in front of your house will put a stop to it sooner or later. So many other options than killing someone over it. Where was Animal Control? Were they ever called? Animal traps could have solved the problem also.
Considering the mentality of this guy, putting traps or cayene pepper would have set him off as well and given him more reason to kill the guy. He would have known who did it.

The gun was illegal. Read the article. He did not have any legal reason for having a gun which makes it an illegal gun. So-------if all guns are made illegal then, work with me on this, he would have to go out and get a gun illegally (like he obviously did).
And while we are at it, the owner of the dog was the one that shot the owner of the property that the dog was using for a toilet. (With an illegal gun)

Five year olds shouldn't own guns. Violent criminals shouldn't own guns. People with certain psychological disorders shouldn't own guns.

Why do dog owners feel like they have special rights. They bring them onto planes where people have allergies. I swear dog owners live in their own screwed up world.

Nav, I have a very good friend who is blind and uses a service dog named Greta. Should she be banned from flying because of your allergies? She's flown many times with Greta and has never had a problem. Well, the only trouble she ever really has is with people who want to give Greta too much attention. She's really a wonderful dog.
I'm the owner of a dog and two cats. My cats don't fly, and neither does my dog. The cats crap in two litter boxes in my basement and the dog stays confined to our fenced in yard and does most of his business there. We go on "poop patrol" every couple of days and clean things up and when we take him on walks everyday, we bring bags. Lots of bags. In fact, I have a container that holds bags that clips on to my belt loop and it's always with me. Not all dog owners "feel like they have special rights." I do not. My blind friend does, yes. But you know, I don't think too many people would want to trade in their eyesight just to be able to bring their dog into some places where dogs aren't normally allowed.
Anybody can be allergic to anything. If you're allergic to dogs and seated in the vicinity of one, by all means ask a flight attendant to reseat you. But, what are you going to do, outlaw dogs, perfume, peanut butter, peanuts, wool, and who knows what else from all public places?
Well from what I have seen, dogs belong at home in maybe in the playground. Not shopping in a department store or Home depot.
Oh and I don't have a problem with a seeing eye dog, I do have a problem with people who are just asses and must bring their pets everyone.
Oh, and I loathe cats, my lungs basically shutdown when I am around them. Even worse than dogs.
