Racist threats at NJ university warn student: 'You Will Die'

After racist threats were found on the door and adjacent wall of a Montclair State University student's dorm room, the sophomore has decided to move back to her parents' home in Newark, N.J.

On the wall were the words "BLACKS ONLY," with an arrow pointed toward the room. And on the door, someone wrote the N-word, and "Black B---- you will die."

See photo, read the original post at NBCNewYork.com

"I instantly started crying," Olivia McRae, 19, told NBC New York.

McRae told her RA, who then called campus police to investigate.

Police were already investigating an earlier bias incident from late January, when someone wrote anti-gay graffiti on walls in a commons area.

That sparked the university to sponsor a Day of Unity earlier this week.

Just hours after that rally, the racist writings were found outside McRae's room.

She wants the university to install security cameras in residence hallways, something that Montclair State was already considering, according to Karen Pennington, vice president for Student Development and Campus Life.

"This is just so much of an anathema to who we are as an institution," Pennington said. She added that the university is taking these incidents "very seriously."

McRae, a sophomore who is studying to be an accountant, has moved back to her parents' home in Newark.

She said she will not drop out of school.

"I'm never going to let anybody stop me from being successful -- I already had a hard enough life," McRae said.

But oh no. There's no racism problem in America. Blacks are just playing the race card.

Racism exists everywhere and is never acceptable. Your comment is simplistic and ignorant...and does nothing to change the problem. To say that noone plays the race card is foolish... of course some do...just as some truly do discriminate because of a persons heritage or ethnicity. Sarcastic comments simply feed the fire, which I suppose is what you were after...trolling for attention.

Not to defend what was done in any way, but there is more to the story than we are being told. What was written on the walls is completely indefensible, but there must have been something that prompted this girl being singled out for this treatment. There are many blacks who live in campus dorms a she is apparently the only one that this was done to. This tells me that there is a very strong probability that there was some other event that prompted this. Possibly she tried using her race as an excuse to get away with something and this was backlash, who knows. All I know is that it is very apparent that we are not getting the whole story behind this incident.

Whether one or two or five idiots wrote racist comments targeting this girl has nothing to do with whether the racist card is far over used in America. Of course there are incidents like this, and they are wrong. But don't use it as an excuse to go on a rant. There was a huge fight at a funeral in a church in Phoenix the other day. The deceased was a black burglar killed in the act. 30 people in the fight - at a funeral. So, should we all draw general conclusions about black criminals and their relatives from that?

Maybe if blacks didn't play the race card so much it would be more believable when incidences like this one come along. There have been so many times when black women have lied against white men only to be found out after much media attention and court venues. And when people like Sharpton and Jackson (an admitted womanizer) get involved to make white people look biased, further stirs the racial pot. There have been strides made, but it has to come from all sides, not just those who think they feel the pangs of injustice more than the others. Remember, no race in the history of this country has been given so much as a hand up than the black race. There's a whole new crop of white kids out there who have seen black kids given freebies just for being black and they are not taking it on the chin like their parents. Pulling the race card is the equivalent of crying wolf. You want equality, give equality.

Why are these type of stories always popping out from strong liberal bastions? Seems to me, that they are the racist ones.. With that being said, I do hope they catch whoever did this..

This is no rant. All whites are not racist. But whenever a racist act happens in the news, it gets defended, or explained away by some poster who feels picked on. All blacks are not victims either. But we're not allowed to speak out against these hateful actions and say what they are? I know many black people who won't speak out about something like this because they're afraid of being accused of playing the race card. According to this article this isn't the first incident. But it's shameful for anyone to down play this situation as though this young woman perhaps brought this on herself. So while I speak my peace, yeah this was a blatant attack on a student's civil rights. And I'm not ashamed to say it. It was a racist act. Got your feelings hurt? Sorry. No trolling here. I'm just a guy who will not be put to shame.

in fact the constant and over playing of the race card for any and everything frankly adds to the problem. In short, people are fed up. When it is real I and others are ready and willing to go to the mat, but 99% of the time its crap. Some politically motivated BS by Holder, or MSNBC commentators. So dont let one issue prop the millions of rediculous ones, like "if you dont vote for Obama you are racist".... that pisses me off.

If you actually pay attention to the news this has been happening more and more. It IS directly tied to the hate speech coming from the politicians on the right. Just listen to them as they are constantly going on about minorities and people of color being lazy, on entitlements and ruining the country. Then you have people calling the president all kinds of racial slurs at events around the country (easily verified as there is a ton of video showing it). This gives the closet racist a green light to let their bigotry out and be vocal. They used to be silent in their racism and bigotry.

Now they figure they can go public without any repercussions.

Its genetic fact that small world racist fearful thoughts that ponder inside your small brain is a side effect of stupidy., so i forgive you, but i wont forgive your actions. the fact is this was a racist thing to happen, and its very hurtful and traumatic for the person who experienced it to know that a complete stranger has such strong hateful feelings towards them for no reason. for anybody to justify it is proof of your absurd evil. (and that your a complete pussy)

This is directly related to the dog whistle racial slurs being made daily by the republican candidates. If it is acceptable for national candidates to slur minorities, why not college kids? Thank you Newt , Mitt, Rick, and let's not forget Ron's racist newsletters. William Buckley and even the Southern Strategy Republicans like Goldwater would be dying of embarrassment if they were not already dead. The party has been hijacked by the fringes who have unleashed an unprecedented amount of incivility in our country. I have re registered as an Independent until the party comes to it's senses and stops pandering to low information , uncivil , partisans who are filled with hate. Stay in school, this will become unacceptable again after the election.

    I'm saddened by this story. This poor girl will NEVER forget this. Hopefully she will put this behind her and come out stronger. However, reading all these "trolls" on here who have it all figured out is even more disturbing. Here's a snapshot of the insight I've gained from the "experts on racism" on this blog;

All conservatives are racist including republican politicians....spoken by idiots who use RACISM has a platform to SHOVE their poltical agenda down everyones throat. Now the real victims of racism (like this girl) have to deal with the "crying wolf syndrome".

Racism is only practiced by white people. If you believe only white people are racist then you obviously haven't been around the entire block yet. Some of the ugliest statements I ever heard came from the lips of Asians, Hispanics, Muslims, etc...as well as white people.

Racists live in the bible belt and South. Uh...wasn't this case in NJ? Racism is alive EVERYWHERE.

What happened to this girls was WRONG. But please, to all those who have ALL THE ANSWERS on here...QUIT ADDING TO THE PROBLEM with your own narrow minded views and thoughts. You're not helping.

Well I served in the Navy as well and encountered racism from both blacks and whites and huge amounts of homophobia, as if someone would give any of these men the time of day. I was propositioned by numerous men with wives with children back home, men with girlfriends waiting for them while at sea. These included enlisted, senior enlisted and yes, even officers. Other times I even had my life threatened. That's why I opted to get out instead of making it a lifetime career.

When I was a kid in Georgia I remember the sick things that we whites did to blacks. Some people that I grew up with did physical and psychological damage to people just so they could feel superior. A handful ended up in law enforcement and carried their hatred to their job. Even if there's some odd twist to this story--let's not deny that racism is alive. Just reading the words placed on these boards daily tells me that.

      Stop the hate.

sandtrich - your honesty is refreshing. Law enforcement in New York City is the same. Racism is alive and well in every color spectrum of the rainbow, certainly not just among the white community. Some blacks would just as soon mow down all whites just as easily as white supremist groups if they could. Many Asians in New York City hate their own customers in their shops and restaurants and feel superior. On many occasions they've talk about their hatred of blacks to me not knowing I'm black. So yes, it's a universal thing.

capncaveman - Where I live as well black adults and youth call each other 'niggas' or 'my nigga' as if this is an affectionate term. Hispanics and whites who wish to be gangsta do it as well. I find it disturbing as you never hear Chinese call their own Chinks, Jews don't call each other Kikes and Hispanics don't refer to each other as 'What's up my Spic.' There is nothing at all endearing about the word 'my nigga' however it's presented. Dr. King would turn over in his grave if he heard how blacks use the word today to greet each other when he tried so hard to stamp out its usage.

But it is still an insult. Why is it okay to be racist against White people? It's not okay to be racist to any race, ethnicity, or culture. So why do people think it's okay to call white folk crackers or rednecks or backwoods hillbillies or whatever derogatory name they can come up with? @Tryreality, I have one question. Why make such a point about you being white, your wife being Asian, and your best friend being Native American? If you're truely not a racist, you wouldn't be trying so hard to show your tolerant, by pointing out the race's surrounding your life. Kind of reminds me of "Me thinks he doeth protest too much". IF race doesn't matter, then race doesn't matter. Not flaming you, but just something to think about.

I'm not so sure. I have a relative who was in the military and he's pretty racist. Thank FSM I only see him twice a year. There's still prejudice in the military unfortunately and their command structure makes it easier for those to force their views on others.

Thank you Ron. That is a true enough statement, that when the shooting starts, most people in the military don't care what color, race, creed, you are. All they really care about is if you can shoot straight and true.

@Alverant, yes there are racists in the military today, and there always will be; at least until society as a whole stops being racist. The Military is really noting more then a little microcosm of society.

"Maybe if blacks didn't play the race card so much it would be more believable when incidences like this one come along. You want equality, give equality"

Sues, So no matter at what level a black person is, whether they are lazy or ambitious, when they are threaten, they should just just shut up and not say anything? I seem to remember that when their parents (yes I am that old) were struggling to make a difference, many whites were not applauding that either. But now that there a young women like this one who is enrolled in a university trying to make a difference for herself, that's not good enough either. No race card being played. She's just asking the same thing that you would want for yourself. Not to be threaten by some racist pricks. The funny thing about it. You we're even there, and yet this seems personal to you.

The difference in racism today and racism 50 years ago in America is this ... 50 years ago, the idiots that did this would have had a cheering section. Today, they only get scorn. No decent American would condone this type of behavior.

Alright, I am a white middle class male. What navyveteran2 is saying on this issue is simply disgusting. You are a racist bastard, and are such a huge part of the problem. It is a cycle. Young punk blacks now play the race card, perhaps encouraged by a single older relative, who knows?, and young whites who were not raised in a racist environment are becoming racist on their own. I see it happen and am disturbed. But then, some idiot lke naveveteran2 makes statements as he does, not worth repeating, and we all lose in the struggle.

I totally agree. In fact, I agree so much, that I did not uncollapse naveveteran2's comment to see how bad it was. naveveteran2 does not represent this navy veteran.

IMHO - I'm a Navy veteran myself and with so many of naveveteran2's comments collapsed I automatically skipped over them, realizing they couldn't be worth the trouble of reading.

No, they are simply showing their true "colors", adding credence to the posters' "racism still exist in America". A fact, they want to suppress! Don't waste time reading or bother to respond to the garbage - click "Ignore this author"!!

Yes, I am a VET also and had good friends that were black. Never forget Tight and Fatman. Unfortunately, the Europeans who came to America spent 300 years terrorizing all the other people, Native Americans, people from Africa, Mexicans, Asian immigrants and others. To think that a few years of trying to erase the past is enough is very foolish and naive. Trust has to be established and that is going to take some generations. Having many Europeans who still are racists does not help things. It may be worse now not because there are more racists, but the internet provides a worldwide platform for racist comments.

Trust is not necessary for the solution to this problem. In fact, trust has nothing to do with fighting racism. Refuse to tolerate racism in any of its insidious forms. Make it totally socially unacceptable. That will break this idiocy.

I do know that when I shared that we, four Women standing holding Obama signs, Nov 2008 that We had numerous N--lovers, and babykillers yelled at us. And I was pretty much called a liar, on this vine. People don't want to admit, that there is racism still around. But we also got positive yells. I think that having the first black President, has brought the worst out in a small % of people. But you have to speak out against all hate speech.

Yes, we have a racist problem. But even beyond that, we have a lack of brains problem. People saying that it's ok to be racist and harrass your favorite scapegoat minority, these people seriously need a brain transplant.

Racism, one of the most serious things to not tolerate.

Find who did it, publicly humiliate them by forcing them to stand on street corners with signs indicating they're racists.

More of it to come. The liberal MSM likes to report only anti gay and anti minority incidents but the praictive is all over the place and by all types of ethnic/racial etc groups.

As we as as nation become more 'diverse' we will become more Balkanized and hateful.

It will get much worse and it will come from all directions.

                                      ThaKamKubla and Tryone,

That is what I would expect from you. Typical of those who are stupid or ignorant and who can not stand an objective post because it offends them personally.

Bet you are both big Obama supporters and defend his going to a chruch like Jeremiah Wright's. And of course, that 'church' only proves my point.

                                        Jo- 759454,

Intelligent enough to be able to identify a world calls hate monger like Rev. Wright and smart enough to know that anyone who would go to a church like his is of the same ilk!

And astute enough to know that the persons I responded to are Obama supporters.

So you are correct, I am that intelligent.
