Cops: 4-year-old brings nine bags of pot to school

A 4-year-old boy brought nine bags of pot to his elementary school and pulled them out during snack time, police said.

A teacher at Hanover Elementary School in Meriden, Conn., alerted officials to the drug early Tuesday afternoon, according to a report in the Record-Journal.  Detective Lt. Mark Walerysiak, a police spokesman, told the newspaper that the child turned over the bags to his teacher.

Walerysiak could not be reached for comment by msnbc.com on Friday.

"The case remains under investigation," Walerysiak told the Record-Journal. The Department of Children and Families "was called in to also conduct an investigation."

School Superintendent Mark D. Benigni called the event “isolated incident,” the newspaper said.

“Our concern is for the 4-year-old student who had no knowledge of what he was bringing to school," Benigni said. "The student is safe and we will continue to ensure a safe learning environment to all of our students."

He said the teacher was close to the child when he pulled the bags out of his coat pocket. No other student was involved, the Record-Journal reported.

Benigni told the newspaper that the child was not at fault. "This is clearly an adult issue," he said.

Well, not the most tasty thing he could have had for lunch, but I'm sure he could have found someone in the school to trade him an apple for a small bag of what he was carring. No big deal really.

The teacher "reported" a certain number of bags. If little Johnny brings X number of bags of pot to school and the teacher reports Y bags of pot, let J represent the total number of bags of pot that were actually brought to school.

What does it matter if its a blue or red state? Why would politics need to play a part in this? Its a 4 year old who is obviously being set up to fail by his parents.

Some people should not be allowed to have children. Better to put him in a foster home now and allow him a productive and successful life then put him back with the losers he has for parents now.

What happened to leaving government out of family... people should be able to know the joy of spawning off their own... the best place for kids is with their parents... the best place for a kid is in a family with one man and one woman as a parent. We didn't even find out if the parents are responsible... they may very well be... but we don't know.

It is a poor assumption to state that someone that keeps ganja in the house is a bad parent. Some of the most productive members of society that I know (including a few very successful hedge fund managers, real estate developers and a clergy member) either grew up in households where smoking pot was not persecuted and/ or are currently partaking in recreational use.

Would anyone out there care to agree or disagree with the following? Those that are adamantly opposed to recreational drug use such as marijuana are the same lot that have never really tried it. On that note, I guess now is the time to remind the Newsvine world that alcohol consumption is significantly more dangerous smoking pot.

        Any thoughts???

Well Bob, I don't have an issue with persons using marijuana that are of reasonable age. A 4 year old? Obviously he wasn't using it. The problem I would see is the 9 bags of pot. I gotta wonder if they were all weighed at a certain weight like 1/8 and were these bags of pot for sell and were the parents or gardians using the kid to transport cause they don't want it on themselves and just plain forgot to remove it or such. I mean 9 bags? I can't help but wonder.. would you do that to your kid?

It makes me sad that decent people think it's okay to belittle others with terms like "tax receiver", especially in these insane economic times where everyone's struggling.

Lots of people look middle class but are living paycheck to paycheck. One lost job or serious illness away from either being homeless or a "tax receiver" themselves. It's going to feel a lot different on the other side.

Robert, Montana tends to be a red state and medical marijuana is legal here. Pot legalization has nothing to do with the political color of the state. It will remain illegal untill politicians and/or the friends of politicians find a way to make large sums of money from legalization. The fact that it isn't hard to grow makes that unlikely. As far as those thinking its a dangerous drug because all the research shows , "well gee whiz it must be dangerous because its illegal" there will be no swaying them. If water was made illegal many would die of dehydration convinced they were doing the healthy thing by avoiding those nasty chemicals found in water....H and O. Alcohol is far more dangerous than pot could ever be, yet it is legal, however if the time comes when it is cheap and easy to produce and people stop buying it then look for the chain reaction...people stop making $ from it, politicians and their friends stop making $ from it, then it must be bad and would be made illegal...(relax drinkers buying alcohol is hassle free enough that people will continue to buy and as long as its moving the $ it will remain legal)

But seriously, I know quite a few very small kids who pack their own lunches--so far, they all seem to have packed things like Doritos and lots of cookies, but I guess it all depends on what they find in the kitchen.

There is an assumption here that the kid picked up the bags at home. Not necessarily true. The article didn't say where he got the pot. Maybe he found them in the school - although the principal would never admit to that.

Reality check: Pot is much more popular in middle and upper class neighborhoods. Why? Cost. The single greatest indicator of likehood of youth drug taking is nothing to do with parenting or or child psyches - it is available disposable income. Drugs are often sold where users can afford them or where users EXPECT to find them. The reason why the misconception that drugs are more prevalent in poor neighborhoods are somewhat complex - but likely because police expect to find "criminal activities" in those neighbrohoods and users and dealers cannot hide behind $800,000+ homes.

Package it like cigarettes, sell it like alcohol, tax it like its a "consumable good" like veggie or fruit that "have to be processed in order to consume".

It grows by itself out of the ground, just like tobacco, vegetables, and fruit.

It's time for teh "War on Drugs" as far as the war on marijuana is concerned to end!

At least the kid didn't accidentally bring an apple and a paring knife, that would have meant a year's expulsion in a lot of places.

it depends on who your teachers are, when i was in junior high i was allowed to carry a pocket knife and when i was in high school i was allowed to build a 5 foot long sword staff made of black walnut and silver with a 3 1/2 foot double edge blade and a mini howitzer cannon that fired on propane and a mini high powered catapult that could shoot steel chunks across the whole room without trying, i graduated in 2004.

In most places if a child can prove they can keep up with the curriculum they are admitted. As long as they can keep up with the classes or exceed them, they are fine. I had a neighbor who's kid was allowed into kindergarten at 4. They ended up skipping a grade and going from first to third later on.

My birthday is in October, and I started Kindergarten when I was 4 because the cutoff date was December 1. I suspect the deadlines vary from state to state, and also that testing allows exceptions to the rule for children who are ready.

As scary as a 4 yr old with pot is .... how about mandatory preschool for 3 & 4 yr olds. It's on the line. Voluntary placement next year, then comes mandatory. All the babies lined up to be trained by the master. Its not mind control if every body does it.... right? Yes get em potty trained then start on the other end.

When you're outnumbered by people whose lives circle around drinkin' beer, smokin' cigarettes, having 3, 4, 5 kids by different fathers, livin' on welfare, and gettin' tattoos & piercings are major priorities...definitely pot in the mix wouldn't be a good idea either, but it's a little late isn't it? I loved the stuff when I was young, but it does make you stupid. And people prey on stupid in this world. This is all stupid enough. Some of us really would have preferred to raise people's IQ's instead of dumbing it down so much.

So Tumbleweed: you are completely fine with tobacco and alcohol which can easily kill you because it's legal. But pot is the anti-christ for being illegal? I don't use any of it either but I'd rather weed be legal and taxed rather than causing death on streets and paying drug cartels.

pot is illegal because of the effects it has on the developing brain and causes permanent damage that will show thru when you get older, one of those symptoms is chronic depression and hormonal issues and because there's a chance that if you mix alcohol with it, it will make you try to commit suicide, there's also some people who become very violent on the drug, i recommend you do research on pots permanent side effects and other problems it causes as the knowledge will make you wonder.

I'm just a little appalled about all the jokes here. It is nothing to joke about. This child, and he could have other brothers and sisters at home, are being raised in a very hostile environment. This child will probably grow up to be just like his parents unless there is intervention of the highest level. A child cannot help what environment they are brought up in, and I feel bad for all the children that are being raised by parents that just have no parenting skills at all. If you love your children, you do the very best you can for them. Thank goodness there was an intentive teacher nearby.

Most of the time there are no bad kids, just horrible parents. Makes me just mad to the core!

Lighten up a little, will you? This story didn't have a kid trying to kill a bunch of other kids or their parents or torture a classmate or some other horror. There is humor in this one, a nice change.

I'm sure it's not going to be too funny for his parents who will have to explain how nine bags of pot got in his little pockets, (maybe it was his brother's coat or another classmates) but I don't think he needs to be ripped away from his parents for a foster home or bundled off to Military school "for his own good" over this. I'd sure like to get "the rest of the story", it should be hilarious.

I look for articles like this because I know there will be some smiles in the comments. Nobody was killed, some dufus parents gave the kid the wrong lunch. It reminds me of the old Cheech and Chong album where a stoner is interviewed by a journalist who wants to know if smoking pot makes you stupid. This article answers the question almost as well as Tommy Chong did.

JG .... You are appalled by the jokes. I am appalled that the USA locks up 850,000 citizens mostly for only possession of marijuana. Marijuana is a benign herb. It is MUCH safer than alcohol or tobacco. It is a useful medicine, a plant with thousands of uses. The only thing wrong with marijuana is the law. Change the LAW!

As for children using marijuana ...no unless it is prescribed by a Doctor. Treat marijuana like alcohol. Legalize it, regulate it, tax it.

This was a poor article. Certainly someone screwed up somewhere mistakedly giving the child access to marijuana. In todays economy can you really blame anyone for selling marijuana? The jobs are not there but the bills are going up. Marijuana sales and prostitution are about the only things left for the people as small cost start up businesses.

Children growing up in alcoholic families have it much worse than marijuana using parents. I know I have personally seen both.

AZTumbleweed, I can't wait until the entire "Reefer Madness" generation dies off and more sensible heads prevail.

The cops in my area have figured out that pot smokers are actually pretty good people. Looking at the police logs in the newspaper, it is always alcohol related crimes.

Hate to break it to some of you but most pot smokers are usually middle class, and unless laced with something it's not a violence inducing drug (though some studies- which can be disputed- have stated that violence can occur with people who already have mental problems).

I personally am not for or against legalizing pot, but I have had friends in my younger years who smoked. They were generally easier to get along with than most.

I once traded two sparkley rocks to a five year old for all his weed. They aren't too smart.

JG- I agree. All of the joking at the expense of a child is a little immature. Also, stop making **it up, people. There is nothing in the article about a Scooby-Doo lunchbox. If you care to read, it clearly states that the child pulled the bags from his coat pocket.

He's a 4-year old special needs child in pre-kindergarten which makes the situation more horrific when you imagine what type of environment he could be subjected to. I'd like to kick his parent(s) right in the AZZ!

And for future reference: Any story like this you find here is going to have to same type of replies, so feel free to skip them. Wouldn't want that stick up your ass to get twisted.

If you don't want people to make *&%^ up, where did you read in the article that he was a special needs child?

                                Punana,

Raising a special-needs child is very stressful. I've done it. Sometimes I've felt the need to take a drink, smoke some pot, take a Xanax or kick the azz of jerks like you. It was pot, for God's sake, not a gun.

I normally smoke it just for the fun of it whether I'm stress or not.

Why don't you last two get a sense of humour.? You are pathetic. People don't want to hear about the poor little boy in a special needs class, they want to enjoy life.....get one.

JG895068, "a very hostile enviroment", not likely. Meth, cocaine, crack, etc, maybe hostile, but pot not likely.

Absolutely a hostile, unsavory, illegal environment. Drug users have no business near children (or other people, for that matter). Their drug use reflects their absence of self-respect, disrespect for others in our society.

When you are weak-willed, you use drugs. When you use drugs, you are a pathetic being. Help is available to get your mind right and become a worthy citizen.
