Democrat's cat beaten to death, 'liberal' scrawled across it

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Police were investigating Monday after a cat belonging to the family of a Democrat's campaign manager was beaten to death and the word "liberal" scrawled across its side.

The cat belonged to the family of Jake Burris, who manages Democrat Ken Aden's bid for Arkansas' 3rd Congressional District.

Burris was returning to his Russellville home with his four children when he found the cat on his doorstep Sunday night, the Aden campaign said in a press release.

The mixed-breed Siamese cat had one side of its head bashed in to "the point the cat's eyeball was barely hanging from its socket," the release said.

Aden told Reuters that the event was "horrible, to say the least."

"Thankfully, there are not that many people who want to do something like this," Aden said. "The majority of people in this district are hard-working folks, but you get the occasional crazy individual out there."

The Russellville Police Department is investigating the incident as an animal cruelty case, according to a police official. Russellville is 80 miles west of Little Rock.

Aden is running against incumbent Republican Representative Steve Womack.

Aden and Burris said they did not believe Womack or his re-election campaign were involved in the incident.

Arkansas' 3rd District is heavily conservative Republican and has been held by a Republican since the 1966 election. Womack first won the congressional seat in 2010 with 72 percent of the vote.

The Womack campaign denounced the violence on Monday.

"The thought of brutalizing any animal for the sake of making a political statement is beyond any standard of decency and the person or people responsible for this act should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law," said Beau Walker, Womack's chief of staff.

Reuters contributed to this report.

I have a little dog that means the world to me.

You can call me crazy, psycho, whatever the hell you would like ... but If I caught anybody trying to bash my dogs head in, I would annihilate them. Plain and simple. I wouldn't even think twice about it. If you are such a sicko that you could harm an innocent pet that has a loving owner, you don't deserve to be a human.

And by the way, I do consider myself a liberal. I'm just not a pacifist. I deplore violence, but I would meet any violence bestowed upon me and mine with equal wrath.

Sorry for the rant, I just can't stand little cowards that gain strength through the torture of weaker creatures.

A "left wing extremist" is someone who loves clean air and and clean water; stops to smell the roses; loves all mankind; believes in freedom of religion; uses the word "Peace" to say "Hello" and/or "Goodbye"; has a positive view towards most everything, and is happy that we have an Environmental Protection Agency to watch out for holigans who try to pollute the air and poison our water!

American Girl,

Nah, what you describe is a left wing IDEALIST. A left wing extremist is the sort of person who spikes trees to make a conservation point (even though it injures logging workers). It's the sort of person to whom any social program that helps people is good, without pausing a moment to consider the fiscal impact. It's the sort of person who believes that more government is always better (even if we can't afford it). It's the sort of person who hates Christians and Republicans every bit as much as the right wing extremists hate atheists and Democrats. It's the sort of person who would try to make a point about corporate greed by blockading a port, when in reality the only effect it has is to prevent a few hundred contract employees from getting a day's pay (right before Christmas to boot). I could go on, but I'm sure you get the point. . .or maybe you don't.

Sure there are crazies on the right. But there are just as many on the left.

Uneducated, mentally deranged, charged up, by the likes of a Shawn Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, or a Frank Luntz, and these people often become as absent of reason as rabid dogs. Most of us, and especially the media, choose to deny the reality and commonality of the legions among the population in this country in favor of something called "political correctness. Your comment was totally out of line. To write such dribble as you did, one has to wonder about your mentality. The person who did this to an animal, is insane. No matter what party they are affiliated with, this is wrong. In fact, I might be inclined to put this person in with some of the lions we used to take care of in wisc. Both sides of this political agenda, have gotten out of control. No one is excused, no matter what party they belong to. @veteran44

The person who did this to an animal, is insane. No matter what party they are affiliated with, this is wrong.

    watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZ0wG8Z7_uM

it matters their political inclination and party. it matters because these things are neither isolated nor random in terms of who the victims are.

there has been an average of one violent attack a month by right wing individuals and that were politically motivated.

when you say that it doesnt matter what party the person is affiliated with, you exonerate right politicians that use phrases like using second amendment solutions. or who put cross hairs on congressional districts held by the opposing party (which are promptly removed from their site once the congressman of that district is shot, which, lets be honest, ammounts to an admission of guilt).

so if you think this is wrong, then the fault is your own because you and your party sit quietly while these things happen repeatedly. if you think this is wrong, look in the mirror, then start demanding that the people in your party stop using that kind of language.

Good point. Why is it that most of these hate charged political crimes are mostly from the right? Aren't they suppose to love their enemies like Jesus told them to?

And how many times we've seen a faction of the right wing use metaphors of or actually use violence to push their agenda? ie. anti abortion terrorists, tim mcveigh, this cat killer and countless other hate mongering criminals of the right.

The people who try to sweep this right wing issue of repeated violence under the rug by pronouncing that they equally do it on both sides live in an alternate reality where they really believe someone like Sarah Palin is suitable to be second in command of the United States of America.

Loved pets become part of a family, like one of the children in the house. Some people would say the perpetrator brutally murdered one of their kids.

I was told by a neighbor in the same block where I live, a retired Michigan cop in his late 60's, when it comes to politically-motivated right-wing violent crimes like this, statistically, look for a white male in their teens or twenties, along with their accomplices. They don't go around doing these kinds of things to pets and people, alone.

Scrawling the word liberal on the poor cat tends to confirm that this heinous act was perpetrated by a right wing zealot. I don't buy the premise that it could have been a left wing extremist trying to place blame on the Right. A number of posters (presumably right wing conservatives) claim that left wing extremists are just as likely to engage in such disgusting behavior. That's right wing extremist justification.

What is left wing extremism anyway? Is that like socialist? Environmentalist? Advocates for Choice, or Conservation? Proponents of these radical concepts don't resort to brutally executing pets to make their point, or engage in violence to intimidate their opponents.

Behavior like this happens when activists on one side ridicule, dehumanize and demonize proponents of the other. This tactic was used successfully by the Nazis to justify extreme persecution of the Jews in Germany and led to the holocaust. Just listen to the attacks on liberals made by Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, or Sean Hannity on Fox News to see it in action in this country. The death of a pet is nothing compared to what might happen if these right wing demagogues rise to power. No doubt Liberalism will be made illegal, subject to arrest, and punishable by hanging.

State police has to take dna samples from the victim's fur, paws, mouth etc. This perpetrator is dangerous- the cruelty exhibited for the kitty makes me sick to my stomach- next it will be a defenseless person who will be a victim. Jake Burnes has to have AK state police check his home (outside),car and his office for any other signs of terrorizing.

In the 60's and 70's the nut-cases were pretty evenly split between the right and the left. In the last 15-20 years or so, the crimes like these seem to be coming from people oriented to the extreme right. Jared Loughner, Joseph Stack, Timothy McVeigh...now this. Notice I didn't say Republican. This is ideological extremism targeted at government and political figures.

This is truly despicable and cowardly. And yes, it was a right wing extremist that did this. I know that there are left wing extremists too, but I think, that they would be the ones who woud fight for rights of animals, and in some cases demand personhood.

The more people I meet and the more news items I read (like this one), the more I think that a cat, dog, or even a rat, would be more worthy of personhood, than many people.

deprogrammer. don't get a cage, get video cameras. The local police here (Oklahoma) would not investigate sign stealing and the other anti-Obama vandalism that went with it. I had to get the culprits on video clear as day. It was not until I went to the media with the video and accusations of police misconduct, that they would even open a case. We IDed the perps ourselves, and took our findings to the state police. The signs weren't a big deal, but the creeps did $11K in damages to my house, fence, and vehicles. They were, big surprise, local church-going Republicans.

Actually the nut job who shot Reagan was a republican, a close friend of the George Bush. Yes he was a nut job, and everyone knew he was a nutjob, including his friends, they also knew how easily manipulated he was. Did you ever wonder how he knew Reagan was going to be at that specific place at that specific time? It wasn't a big event, nothing was announced. Someone had to give him inside info. Just saying.

I live here now because just a few blocks away resides my elderly mother who hasn't been doing so well these past few years since her stroke, so instead of uprooting her from the home she lived in for 40 years we decided to move here for a few years, it was far less stress for her. There is no culture, everything in the store is genetically modified, it is windy, cold, dusty and republican, but it is home for now.

              Stand and Deliver

I was just joking abot the electrified cage, I wouldnt want to wake up to fried teabagger on my front lawn. I think I will get a camera and maybe an alarm system so I can catch them in the act. If they vandalize my truck again though they will get an ass full of buckshot.

I don't think anyone here believes that. It's just the majority of items like this that make the news are perpetrated by reich-wing whack-jobs. I can't help but feel sorry for the moderate republicans. They had to endure eight years of the "Dubya", then embarrassed by Palin and the Tea-bagger movement. Now that Obama is getting things passed the Reagan had supported, they have nowhere to take cover.

And how do you know the people who stole his yard sign were from his neighborhood? Do you have inside information of the people who vandalized deprogrammers truck and stole his yard sign?

Please do not put words in peoples mouths, blaming someone for saying they were going to kill someone when that is not what they said is a very serious offense and could result in a lawsuit.

Alaska has lots of animals, and it has Sarah Palin , Sarah likes to kill things and hates cats and liberals, Hillary Clinton's from Arkansas, she's a liberal and she likes cats, Sarah hates Hillary and has hallucinations that she can see russia from her front porch in Wasilla Alaska, thus Sarah Palin killed the cat. Thats what Alaska has to do with it.

Their to busy growing up, unsupervised, left with Video games and TV to teach them about how the world works. Common sence, and common decency have been tossed out in the U.S. long ago. When mom and dad both have to slave for enuff scratch, to cover all the inflated expences of regular day to day life, who's left to oversee impressionable youth in this me first country? Or when most parents come home from a long day of work, who has the energy to rush dinner, clean up, and drive an hour, or more, to a school in another part of town, in which the children were forced to go to because of some government quota. No child left behind, is plainly dumbing down the curriculum, to a point where you don't need to be smart to make a passing grade. Anymore, you only need to be smart enuff to push a button, while stareing at a Video screen to drop a bomb on some schmuck somewhere in the world who doesn't walk in lock-step with US................. Senceless act of violence? What in the world are you talking about? I can just hit the reset button.

As far as the cat goes - unfortunately and far too frequently, these things turn out to be ill-conceived plans to discredit someone. I have absolutely no input or interest in the local AK (sic) election. It's just too bad a cat had to be brutalized for (someone's) political gain.

News flash Floridian1, No child left behind has nothing to do with kids not being able to go to their neighborhood schools. Busing began in the 60s and 70s to allegedly fix the failure of kids from black neighborhoods. Hasn't worked and yet it continues. No child left behind was a means of measuring the success of schools by testing the kids to see how much they learned. The briliant department of education turned that into teaching to the test, so not success there either except some really bad schools did get closed.

correction, shaking my head, busing for whites, began in the 60s and 70s as an attempt to end segregation. Busing was always a reality for black kids in the south who were, because of the Jim Crow laws, bussed out of their neighborhoods to attend all blacks schools.

Part of the solution to our disfunctional politics is to seek points of agreement. Weiser - you should get your facts straight. The cat was killed and had 'liberal' written on it. In Florida - the TeaParty is again saying that Obama is 'definitely a muslim' and that they need to take their country back (from what?). In AZ, the republican party auctioned off a Glock to celebrate the one year anniverary of Rep. Gifford's shooting. Looks like the 'right' has a lock on the lunatic extremists.

Shall we keep going back? McVee (the OK City bomber) thought that the government was too socialist (definitely not a leftie), Ron Paul allowed the American National Socialist Party to advertise in his newsletter (this is the white supremist group - and tells you about the reader base and about Ron Paul). This list can go on. I can't think of any left wing extremists in the last 20 years. Can you?

When all the extremists and nut-cases are in one party, it is fair to state that this is the party of nut-jobs.

Lincoln was a liberal and John Wilkes Booth was a conservative. By today's standards, even Ronald Reagan seems liberal.

So what's your point? You're actually proving mine. The claim was made that this only happens to Democrats. I called bull@!$%#. You know, it's the extremists, both on the Left and on the Right, that will be the death of this country. You're all bat@!$%# crazy on the fringes, and from the middle you all look alike.

The failure of "respectable" conservatives to separate themselves from the extreme right who have no respect for human or animal life in their fascination with ideology (or sheer hate for the more literacy-challenged) is to m e no different from the "respectable" Muslims who will whine, "it isn't me," or "Im not like that" whenever an Islamic terrorist gets on thenews. Unfortunately these so-called respectable representatives of their particular ideology, party, or religion, somehow just don't scream loud enough and heaven forbid they should actually "quit" their association with such company and make a real statement, leaves me cold. Long sentence but basically, it's crocadile tears all around. Yes, Hannity, Limbag, and the other rightist scumbags who de-humanize their political or ideological oppoonents are no better than the Nazis who de-humanized the Jews in order to justify in the gullible public's mind their killling and abuse of this particular group of people who were different from them. It's all h appening again, as someone on this thread mentioned the act of this scumbag inhuman @!$%# is redolent of Mussolini's campaign of fascistm in Italy in the 1920s and 1930s. It always seems to come from the right, be it KKK or Republican, yes I'll say it. How many Democrats have bombed ppublic buildings, killed animals and carved letters in their flesh, and killed abortion doctors? Maybe all Republicans are not bigots and thugs, but somehow these days the bigots and thugs are fully identified with Republicans.

you republicans are to blame for all this!! All we have heard for years since Fox propaganda has taken over as your Bible is hate and fear...encourageing people with guns and Targets and scopes and CROSSHAIRS to kill our president!! and now Walmart has redesigned their stores in Texas ( gotten rid of their sewing section) to make more room for guns and ammunition!! Just for you paranoid scitzos. you shoud be more concerned about Big Business than your government. They are the ones who are gonna make you work for lots less w/o benefits or vacation. Someday...I hope it's not too late...you are gonna beg for the socialistic government to help you...because Big Business is going to use you up an spit you out and have the power to throw you under the bus...literally.My Daddy walked the picket line as a union worker back in the 50's and 60's...and he was proud to do it. He wanted our life to be as strong as his. And now Repugs have all the weakened people to accept that Big Business knows how to run this country...NOOOO...Democrats know how we need to move this country forward...get our jobs back in this country...manufacture here!!! make clothes here!!BUY AMERICAN!!!!! We keep talkin about supporting our soldiers and yet yesterday.the power co. in San Antonio tried to cut off our soldires power bill...just when he got home!! Hey Soldiers!! The government is your Boss...Don't dis them!!I respect and will help all the soldires but I also respect my President and do whatever his office ask me to to HELP!!

One can compare the reactions of republicans to these lunatic actions to the reaction of the muslim community to terrorism. They claim to abhore it but don't separate themselves from the people doing it and instigating it (think Rush, Beck, Palin, Hannity, many of the other commentators at Fox News).

Yup - I just tied the mindset of the right wing to terrorist supporters... When the shoe fits...

If I left anything out go right ahead and add to it. . . . . we'll understand.

Up to 400 hours of community service. Let the example begin! Somewhere else. With someone else.

Animal cruelty laws are pretty lame. Not much punishment involved. Too bad, since there's always been a pretty good link between someone who will injure and animal and someone who will injure a human. In fact, it's a characteristic present in almost all serial killers (no cause and effect there, just a relationship). You're right, though - it does need to stop.

SanDiegoNative, here in Arkansas our animal cruelty law has a punishment of a fine (I can't remember the amount; I think it's $1,000) and up to one year in JAIL. I surely hope they catch this person and do all they can to him!

Believe it. And somehow I don't think it's going to stop after this election year is over. No matter who is the next President. The hateful ones just can't ever be satisfied even with a political win. They've somehow got to make other people miserable who aren't just like them. When winning they are bullies, and everyone here knows who that is. When losing, they whine and cowardly always, attack anonymously and violently. No animal is as vicious as a bad human being.

Only an animal would bash in the head of a defenseless cat and then write on it and leave it on the owners porch. With no regard for the horrific effects on the children.

Yes, don't insult the animal kingdom by comparing this creature that doesn't deserve to breathe the air with the rest of us to them. And it's not just that the children will be upset. How about having some compassion for the suffering creature itself? Would you feel better if the children were protected from knowing about this sadistic and gruesome crime against a fellow creature, and everything would be hunky dory then. You can't hide for ever from the evil that is around. You can only look it in the eye and try to prevail against it.

Most atrocities like this are committed by the right against the left. Like that poor woman in Arizona whose life is forever changed because of some hell bent twisted self-righteous zealot on the right. During the Obama run up to the Presidency some very stupid young woman on the right disfigured herself and blamed it on someone on the left. I say she was stupid because she used a mirror and wrote Obama backwards on her face with a sharp instrument. If a young woman on the left had done this we would still be hearing her name. And yet they have the nerve to think of themselves as the moral majority.

I suppose the signs are not meant for them to see.

As a conservative, I deplore what was done to the cat, but many of the comments on this item are beyond the pale. No person in their right mind would do such a thing and it makes me ashamed of our political system if acts like this define the debate.

It is time that we all remember that differences of political opinion, while important, are not as important as our basic morality.

Whoever did this should have the same thing done to them. How this for conservative, you get convicted for assault, you get the ever loving snot kicked out of you. The disgusting thing is this "person" is going to be do maybe a year in jail. Some punishment - free room and board for a year. How about once you convict this person, leave them in a room with this liberal with a good 2 x 4, then it will be justice.

A cat in Houston gets shot with an arrow. Now this. Then there was the guy that dragged his dog behind his vehicle. There are other stories of animal cruelty popping up all the time.

It takes a certain kind of person to commit these acts. These types of monsters will keep doing this stuff as long as animal cruelty statutes are so incredibly lax. I'm not optimistic that that's going to change.

Those of us who have (and have had) companion animals know that they are beings in their own right. They trust people and think people are their friends.

There are evil people everywhere. The best way to protect your companion animals is to keep them indoors.

...at least you have the courage to admit it - most Republicans are too cowardly to admit this.

Actually Weiser, conservative terrorism often involves killing innocents. Remember the OK city bombing, the Olympic bombing, the murder of doctors, shooting up churches, pumping poison gas into a mosque, etc.

I am not a big animal rights nut... in fact I think many people take the whole animal rights thing way too far. This is just dumb though. Everyone was going crazy when that guy ate that... what was it... a cat? I said it was no big deal... they made a big deal out of it cause he ate something an American would have as a pet. I think that is much less worse (killing an animal for food) than this (killing an animal to make a statement).

What proof do you have that the person who did this is Republican? He/she is definitely a sick individual, but it's not fair to say he/she must certainly be Republican. Might not have any party affiliation at all, considering he/she didn't scrawl "Democrat" on the poor dead animal. There's enough divisiveness already. Let's not add to it by condemning all Republicans for the actions of one twisted nut job.

Hope they catch the sicko who did this, and certainly hope the parents can help their children cope with what had to be a very traumatic experience.
