Montana school district: Missing teacher is dead

Sidney High School math teacher Sherry Arnold, 43.

Updated at 6:17 p.m. ET:

The Associated Press reports a 47-year-old man was taken into custody in North Dakota while a 22-year-old man was being questioned in Rapid City, S.D., in the case of Sherry Arnold.

Sidney Police Chief Frank DiFonzo did not identify the men and declined to answer any questions about the investigation, the AP said.

Earlier

SIDNEY, Mont. -- Montana school district officials say the high school math teacher who went missing last weekend is dead, and the FBI announced it has one man in custody and is questioning another in connection with her disappearance.

Sidney Public School officials posted a statement on the school website saying they learned of Sherry Arnold's death about 9:30 a.m. Friday after authorities had notified family members. There has been no official police announcement that a body had been found.

"This has been a very challenging time for our family and we would appreciate some privacy and time to process what has happened," Karen Arnold Truax told msnbc.com on Friday.

Arnold Truax, who is the daughter of Sherry Arnold's husband, Gary, said the outpouring of support has overwhelmed the family.

"We want to thank everyone across the country for their support, time and prayers," she said. "With the support of family, friends and God, we will get through this."

FBI Special Agent in Charge David J. Johnson of Salt Lake City said a tip from the public led to the suspects, according to a statement released by the FBI.

Authorities had been investigating the possibility Arnold had been abducted.

Hundreds of residents, police, firefighters and others combed the northeast Montana town and surrounding countryside earlier this week for the popular 43-year-old teacher, who went missing after a weekend run, after recovering only a single running shoe.

The school district lent buses to transport members of search teams and set up a fund to defer expenses.

The district posted on its website: "In response to this news, the District will be in session until 2:00 PM. All route busses will operate at 2:00 PM. Additional counselors are on hand this morning in all buildings and parents, if needed, may check their students out from each building. Friday games are cancelled."

The Associated Press contributed to this report, as did msnbc.com's Sevil Omer.

Seems like I read more bad news than good lately. My heart goes out to her family.

There's a reason for that. It's called: Sensationalism.

It sells the news. Consider this: FBI crime statistics show that violent crime has been steadily declining since the early 90's-- we're at the lowest point we've been since the 60's -- yet, in that same time frame, news coverage of violent crime increased around 300%. The perception, based on the news cycle, seems to indicate that violence is increasing, when the exact opposite is true. Check it out:

could it be that the exaggerated portraying of violence in the news is why the rates of violence/crime is actually going down? if criminals are scared of the price for their actions they are less likely to act criminal. I'm sure there's more to it than this though.

Sensationalism sells because the public buys it. Sad.

here's an even better idea report more criminals getting shot when they try to break in or commit crimes if we make it look hopeless for them maybe even more will stop and think.

What a tragedy. Still cannot understand why people find it necessary to kill in situations like this. She was just out for a jog. I hope the perpetrators are given their due justice.. no long trial wasting taxpayers money... My thoughts and prayers are with her family..

Was hoping this would have had a better outcome. This woman beat cancer and was murdered by strangers, for what? Makes you wonder what's the matter with people anymore.

Sad. The America we once knew is slowly changing for the worse. Who would have thought a person would need a gun just to go jogging out in "god's country". Nowhere is safe any more. Heck, it may even be no more worrisome to jog in the city nowadays. Sympathies to all.

now you go to a sporting goods store and buy some baseball bat at beat these guys till they confess then execute them public...that will surely send a chilling message to those who THINK about something as awful as this !! I HATE SCUMBAGS!!!yeah !!!!!

Just one problem to your approach to "justice" - you could end up beating an innocent person until they "confessed" to a crime they didn't commit, then you'd kill them and think yourself justified. But of course, that would make you worse than the criminal, and with someone wrongly convicted and executed, the guilty party would go free.

That's why we have a system of laws and the courts, not vigilante mobs.

My guess is that while jogging she was struck by a car (the driver was DUI?) while running, and the idiots who struck her put her in the car and carried her off instead of getting her the medical help she needed. So sad! I also encourage everyone to NOT jog with earbuds in.

I think there is a long list of mothers (women) last year who KILLED their own child.

Murder is done by any sex,age or race.

I think you should check statistics. Violence is still the domain of males, by great odds. Those crimes committed by women are sensational because of their rarity. On the other hand, violent acts and murders by men often never hit the papers because they are so commonplace.

You can believe what you fervently and childishly wish to be true or you can deal with reality. And maybe by acknowedging that violence against women is a pervasive, shameful, and major problem you might actually be motivated to contribute to ending it.

Sorry to hear that this teacher/wife/mother/friend was not found alive. It breaks your heart that the good ones are killed by malicious scum, and these killers like Vandersloot get to live (even if it's behind bars).

And never jog alone... bring a friend or a big dog, a cell phone, and perhaps pepper spray. Stay alert and stay away from isolated locations.

Judging by that photo, I'd suspect that she was attacked by a bunch of yahoos that thought she was a gay man. Some criminals will use any excuse, however feeble and wrong, to justify their crimes.

I too have a fairly daily routine of running or walking either in the morning or after work. I live in a small community and my husband worries, but I have always told him "God help the person who tried to take me...I'd fight to the death." Then, I heard about Sherry and read about how all they found was her running shoe, and my first thought was that she certainly must have put up a fight and it just wasn't enough. I am so tired of people like these perpetrator (s) who took what they wanted, when they wanted, with no regard. God Bless Sherry's family.

This breaks my heart and hits so close to home for me. I have been a runner for almost 15 years. I've had a few issues, like being followed and harrassed, over the years. To all women who run, take your cell phone and let people know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Never run in isolated areas (like trails) alone and avoid running at night. I like to change up my routine frequently, like taking different routes and running at different times. My sister-in-law recently dealt with a stalker who knew her routine. Sherry may have done all of these things and it still wasn't enough to protect her. I am so sick of these loser creeps who have to ruin it for people trying to just live their lives - makes me nuts!!!

Maybe a gun as well as a cell phone? When seconds count the cops are minutes away.

How about a cell phone, a gun, pepper spray, AND a dog? Maybe that combination would make evil people think twice before attacking.
