Subscribe to RSSHARRISBURG, Pa. -- The charity for at-risk children founded by Jerry Sandusky on Monday asked its donors to instead give their money to the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape.
The Second Mile made the recommendation in the latest sign its days may be numbered. But the charity said its December programs will continue as scheduled.
The Second Mile was founded in the 1970s by Sandusky, who was charged this month with sexual abuse of eight boys over a 15-year period. Prosecutors say Sandusky, a former Penn State assistant football coach, met victims through the charity. He denies the allegations.
Last week, the charity said it was considering restructuring, transferring programs to other organizations or ceasing operations.
Lawyers for one of the people described in a grand jury report as a victim of repeated sexual attacks by Sandusky are seeking a court order to prevent the charity from unloading its assets.
The scandal has resulted in the ouster of head football coach Joe Paterno and has cast a shadow over one of college football's most legendary programs.
In other developments Monday:
- A team with the U.S. Department of Education arrived in State College as part of the federal investigation into whether the school violated reporting mandates for campus crime. The federal investigation centers on whether reporting provisions of the Clery Act were complied with in the Sandusky case. State prosecutors charged athletic director Tim Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz with not properly reporting suspected child abuse and perjury before a grand jury. Violations of the Clery Act, named for a Lehigh University freshman who was raped and murdered in her dorm room by another student in 1986, can bring fines and a loss of federal student aid.
- Penn State said student government leaders and high-ranking administrators will participate in a town hall forum Wednesday for students about the child sex abuse scandal. The forum will be broadcast by the Pennsylvania Cable Network and streamed over the Internet. The school also plans three forums for students that will be run by its counseling and psychological services center. Potential topics include the criminal allegations, Penn State's image, the reactions of others to the scandal and stress.
Curley has been placed on leave, and Schultz, who oversaw the university's police department, has stepped down.
Schultz and Curley have denied the allegations and await preliminary hearings next month. Sandusky acknowledges he showered with boys but says he never molested them.

The fact of the matter is both sad, and disturbing. Those persons that would harm or molest a child, work themselves into positions of respect, near those children that they would abuse. That doesn't mean that persons working in child-related positions should be under the microscope. But it does encourage those that hire child care related positions to look very hard at the person that has applied. And those that would volunteer their services, I'm sorry to say, must be scrutinized even harder. My brother was sexually abused by his babysitter--we didn't know 'til 50-years later....
You sound very concerned about adults harming children in inappropriate relationships aliveinsd. SO what should we do about the TENS OF MILLIONS of mothers who use their children for their OWN EMOTIONAL AND FINANCIAL NEEDS? Or are you just happy to go after men.......

Maybe we should look at some celebrities that sponsor programs and have loose morals, I know that would look like a witch hunt, but it has me wondering. Lady ?? is into youth is she and others legitimate. just a thought. who can you trust. even Marlo T taught sex ed to teenage girls is that right I'm old fashioned should some one have rights just because they are gifted. or should we look at them a little harder and see what their motives really are, I'm not accusing anyone just using examples. Remember Pee Wee Herman had a kids show turned out he had some issues. we put faith in these people.

Z1P2: I think you missed D_Loominator's point. At risk cildren don't become that way on their own. There are abusive mothers who deliberately put their children in harms way. We need to address that issue in America. We have the highest child murder rate in the industrialized world. Mothers are responsible for the majority of them.
Others emotionally abandon and/or isolate children. Some even sell their own children into prostitution. Not only did Roman Polanski deserve prison, so did the girl's mother who brought her to his house that night.

He makes a good point. That's the definition of feminism, whose biased creed only includes "violence against women & girls." Most current domestic violence programs are based on this faulty premise. The media exploits this notion of politically correct child abuse by mainly focusing on sexual abuse. If not for the magnitude of the Catholic Church and now Penn State cases, very little would be said to include boys as victims of sexual assault.
Parents should keep their kids away from people like Truth Is Power, who self-righteously claims disgust with pedophilia while salaciously describing the acts.

The fact is I have an axe to grind against domestic court which rewards women using their children for their emotional and material needs and the sexist bigoted society which perpetuates that process. My comment in no way attempted to justify pedophilia. It attempted to bring attention to child exploitation just as damaging which is being ignored. The fact that you implied pedophilia on such flimsy reasoning is precisely indicative of of your possible psychological issues. My guess is that either you are the epitome of the non sexual child exploiter that I was referring to or you have never dealt with your own sexual abuse issues and see pedophiles at every turn. Perhaps you can enlighten us as to which. I welcome further discourse if you have something intelligent to say. But I will not bother to answer further logically fallacious invective. amazing that this charity that apparently hid his behaviors is now actively trying to dispose of resources that will likely be due these children follwing lawsuits. Gotta love the Board of Directors of this "charity"
Let's not forget the contempt charges against Second Mile for the missing records concerning Sandusky's expense account.

Somewhere there has to be an end to blame. Sometimes a person doesn't really "see" what is going on. As aliveinsd said, sometimes you just don't know. When it comes out, then the guilt and blame is applied.
End to the blame? Everyone who was even remotely aware of what happened is to blame.

Sometimes "the right thing" doesn't seem enough. But this is the agency's start. Too bad so many have to suffer its demise.
And sometimes these disturbing things happen to children at the hands of someone who never was affiliated with a child-related profession. It happened to a family member of mine as well, I'm saddened to say.

Stevo The "reason" to shut it down from the boards view is they are about to get sued beyond reality. Even if they win it will cost a fortune in legal fees or payoffs. Second Miles budget was only 2.4 million and about 9 million in the bank. Look for the board to be included in the civil suits as they make a big chunk of change and have been there for a significant time including when the assaults occurred. It would be foolish for anyone to donate to this charity. Also the board would not be performing it's fiduciary JOB if they weren't attempting to reduce the charity's exposure. After all that seems to be all that is expected, do nothing beyond your job while ignoring ethics and morals.
I think Stevo 14 might be right. There are many kids, I would bet, that have benefitted, and look to this charity for continued support, etc.
Why the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape? PCAR is a 35 year old organization founded in the "all men are potential rapists" days of militant feminism.

3%?!?!? A FACT!?!? Even the Oprah approved statistic puts the number at 1 in 6. Many in the field believe it's closer to 1 in 4 considering boys are so much less likely to tell. That's more like 25% of men. But what would you expect from a study titled "the National Violence Against Women Survey."
PCAR claims, "Unfortunately, men are victims and survivors of sexual assault and rape too. Their victimization is just as important to take seriously and end as women’s victimization."
Nonsense. If sexual abuse of boys was deemed "important" by groups like PCAR and N.O.W. they would have included boys in the dialogue about sexual abuse 35 years ago. The statistics about boys being abused were available then, but women's groups chose to completely ignore them. Had they encouraged boys to speak up about abusers back then, this whole Penn State thing as well as the Catholic Church debacle may have been routed out decades ago. They politicized child abuse and made the issue entirely about "women & girls."
I spoke out and wrote newspaper articles about child sexual abuse of boys back then. I was literally told by women I deserved to be raped as a child because I was part of the "patriarchal system of oppression." "Now you know how it feels," I was told.
PCAR has exploited the Penn State tragedy enough already. They raked in buckets of cash during the big home game a couple weeks ago. Right when everyone was steeped in shame and humiliation from the riots. Shameless opportunism.

Let's not convict anyone before all the data is in. Let's work constructively, NOW, for the victims. One good way would be to go here: and make a contribution and then spread the link around with the same notation. If this guy is guilty, the system will punish him, if not, a lot of people are going to look really stupid for spreading this vitriol and pompus, self righteousness all over the web. This should be about the kids, not the alleged acts of one potentially evil man.

That's not an accurate statement Z1P2. There are a few (VERY few) cases where someone legally classified as a "pedophile" or sex offender is actually a victim of the unintended consequences caused by a poorly written law. I work with our local Sheriff's Dept mapping locations of registered offenders and ensuring they don't live within 1000' of a school, public park, day care center or youth program center per State Law. Most of them are real dirt bags and an absolute waste of DNA but at least one was a young man who, before the law was changed, was charged with statutory rape just after he turned 18 by the parents of his 16 year-old girlfriend because the parents hated him and disapproved of his relationship with their daughter. He was convicted even though the girfriend testified that they had been dating for years, the sexual activities had began when they were both minors, all sexual activities were mutually consensual and that half the time SHE had been the initiator. Because of issues like that the law now provides that as long as the minor is greater than 14, the acts are all consensual and there is no more than 4 years difference in age then statutory rape doesn't apply. Cracking down on convicted offenders like this one young man really isn't right. Now what Sandusky did, if true as sure seems to be the case, is absolutely a case where cracking down is without a doubt the right thing to do. I agree with you in concept but it's not an absolute.

Not sure the Second Mile charity's funds can be frozen and held to compensate the victims but I'm for it, if possible. I do agree that Penn State should clean house right now. All of the current athletic staff should be given their walking papers. The athletic staff is a close working environment. To think that any of them had no idea of what was possibly going on is bull. Anyone who has worked in a close knit environment with other members know, knew, whispered about, etc. No truly honest person who has worked at such a job can say, when something big finally goes down, that they and other employees didn't have an inkling. So Penn State should clean house and give itself time to heal. It should also make sure that future members hired in this category are the type of employees that would go straight to the police if they have any idea that, possibly suspecting that, maybe even knowing that, such sexual behavior was happening. For right now, Penn State is on very shaky ground no matter how many rally 'round the flag pole.
As for the federal, local, and any other law enforcement dealing with the criminal acts of Sandusky and others, "Nuke the b%#^&*ds". It's the only way to be sure that this particular filth is ended. As for you other athletic staff employee pedophiles who are watching - beware. This incident has already started to hit hard with other victims coming forth about other athletic staff employees. Hopefully, it will branch out to all pedophile activities and give the victims courage to come forth at the very beginning.

You do realize that this charity was in theory for disadvantaged children... more than likely single parent? Would YOU turn down free baby sitting and some free gifts to enhance your childs life?
I guess ALL people who enjoy providing structure for kids are perverts in your eyes. Scout leaders don't get paid, coaches generally don't get paid unless it is part of their JOB. Some charities actually do provide things for free as part of their programs... school supplies, uniforms, summer camps, tutoring, t-shirts, sporting events, community events. Things that some cannot afford or have time to provide because they are WORKING to put food on the table.
and PLEASE show your education a bit better... loose is not secure or tight. LOSE is a loss.
oh thanks sandusky, with your words of wisdom (joke) to give elsewhere.....could it be your form of revenge yet again to the victims, so they can't sue for what you may call too much money for compensation of your satisfaction. In reality this is also a wake up call to donors....and insist they have more access to information and even invitations to visit the programs of which they are donating to...because just as it was revealed to the world, that the 8 mile run foundation was nothing more then a kid sex ring operation, supporting adults to abuse children. sounds like everybody has a consciounce.

What I don't understand is why are we letting the media play judge and jury (you guys know that a grand jury report is something produced by the prosecutor and without the input of the defendant right?)? Let's let the legal system find the truth and decide on what is right and wrong. I don't condone what happened with the allegations but let's let cooler heads prevail. For those saying the whole staff and adminstration knew about this....how do you know? If a priest had such a issue do you see the the vacating of the whole vatican? Notice, a lawyer of the said victim wanted all assets of the charity frozen and not distributed to other charities (Why?) b/c there is money involved!!! It's not about helping victims or other in need, there is probable cause that people want to get a share of the pie.

I wholly agree with freezing the charity assets; it doesn't matter that this is going to be civilly litigated, and that the potential victims may be able to defund the charity through court awards. This is the only remedy available to those victims - it's not as if, were Sandusky found to be guilty and investigations reveal not only Penn State but board members of the charity knew what was happening and covered it up, the victims could drag all persons involved through the streets or exercise some other more barbaric form of justice - monetary damages are it. I would add I'd like to think these victims, if damages are awarded, would get together to start a charity of their own for children victimized by pedophiles...Victims Helping Victims or something.
Yeah, lawyers will do what they can to protect assets because they will get a slice of the pie. However, if an attorney is good enough at his/her craft, why shouldn't they?! Perhaps they could donate part of their fees toward a charity as well.
You people seems to want money for justice because the perps were all high society people before the exposure of their secret lifestyle and seems to have money. There exists in american society the saying: money is the root of all evil. Given this knowledge among christians in america, why the average americans want money for justice? What about guantanamo bay detention camp?
