Subscribe to RSSMADISON, Wis. -- Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's daughter, whose defection to the West during the Cold War embarrassed the ruling communists and made her a best-selling author, has died. She was 85.
Svetlana Alliluyeva, who was known as Lana Peters since 1970, died of colon cancer Nov. 22 in Wisconsin, a state where she lived off and on after becoming a U.S. citizen, said Richland County Coroner Mary Turner.
Her defection in 1967 — which she said was partly motivated by the poor treatment of her late husband, Brijesh Singh, by Soviet authorities — caused an international furor and was a public relations coup for the U.S. But Alliluyeva, who left behind two children, said her identity involved more than just switching from one side to the other in the Cold War. She even moved back to the Soviet Union in the 1980s, only to return to the U.S. more than a year later.
Alliluyeva (pronounced ah-lih-lu-YAY'-vah) carried with her a memoir she had written in 1963 about her life in Russia. "Twenty Letters to a Friend," was published within months of her arrival in the U.S. and became a best-seller.
When she left the Soviet Union in 1966 for India, she planned to leave the ashes of her late third husband, an Indian citizen, and return. Instead, she walked unannounced into the U.S. embassy in New Delhi and asked for political asylum. After a brief stay in Switzerland, she flew to the U.S.
Upon her arrival in New York City in 1967, the 41-year-old said: "I have come here to seek the self-expression that has been denied me for so long in Russia." She said she had come to doubt the communism she was taught growing up and believed there weren't capitalists or communists, just good and bad human beings. She had also found religion and believed "it was impossible to exist without God in one's heart."
In the book, she recalled her father, who died in 1953 after ruling the nation for 29 years, as a distant and paranoid man.
Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin denounced her as a "morally unstable" and "sick person" and added, "We can only pity those who wish to use her for any political aim or for any aim of discrediting the Soviet country."
"I switched camps from the Marxists to the capitalists," she recalled in a 2007 interview for the documentary "Svetlana About Svetlana." But she said her identity was far more complex than that and never completely understood.
"People say, 'Stalin's daughter, Stalin's daughter,' meaning I'm supposed to walk around with a rifle and shoot the Americans. Or they say, 'No, she came here. She is an American citizen.' That means I'm with a bomb against the others. No, I'm neither one. I'm somewhere in between. That 'somewhere in between' they can't understand."
The defection came at a high personal cost. She left two children behind in Russia — Josef and Yekaterina — from previous marriages. Both were upset by her departure, and she was never close to either again.
Raised by a nanny with whom she grew close after her mother's death in 1932, Alliluyeva was Stalin's only daughter. She had two brothers, Vasili and Jacob. Jacob was captured by the Nazis in 1941 and died in a concentration camp. Vasili died an alcoholic at age 40.
Alliluyeva graduated from Moscow University in 1949, worked as a teacher and translator and traveled in Moscow's literary circles before leaving the Soviet Union. She was married four times — the last time to William Wesley Peters, after she came to the U.S., and she took the name Lana Peters. The couple had a daughter, Olga, before divorcing in 1973.
Alliluyeva wrote three more books, including "Only One Year," an autobiography published in 1969.
Her father's legacy appeared to haunt her throughout her life. She denounced his policies, which included sending millions into labor camps, but often said other Communist Party leaders shared the blame. "Over me my father's shadow hovers, no matter what I do or say," she lamented in a 1983 interview with the Chicago Tribune.
After living in Britain for two years, Alliluyeva returned to the Soviet Union with Olga in 1984 at age 58, saying she wanted to be reunited with her children. Her Soviet citizenship was restored, and she denounced her time in the U.S. and Britain, saying she never really had freedom. But more than a year later, she asked for and was given permission to leave after feuding with relatives. She returned to the U.S. and vowed never to go back to Russia.
She went into seclusion in the last decades of her life. Her survivors include her daughter Olga, who now goes by Chrese Evans and lives in Portland, Ore. A son, Josef, died in 2008 at age 63 in Moscow, according to media reports in Russia. Yekaterina (born in 1950), who goes by Katya, is a scientist who studies an active volcano in eastern Siberia.
Her father died in 1953.

Joseph Stalin was one of the most brutal dictators in all of History, he and Adolph Hitler were partners in starting WW 2, they carved up Poland, and Stalin got Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, with Finland after a tough battle, he was responsible for over 20 million Russian deaths; then Hitler turned on him and the bloodiest war, the eastern front caused another 11 million causality's. He was so Brutal that today his name is even erased from the list of Soviet hero's; Roosevelt was very ill at Yalta, he knew that if he did not give Stalin all of eastern Europe, that another war would start, America was tired of the war, he gave in and the cold war started and lasted until about 45 years.

Well the real natives as you call them were also not of North America going back through history....they came from what is now Siberia (and beyond) over the Bering land bridge most likely following the animals they hunted and settled on that land (North, Central & South America)....they are not originally from North America so they too in a way are immigrants....there were no people anywhere in North, Central or South America until the Bering Land Bridge came into being.
Son-of-Anubis, there is evidence that other people did exist here before the migration of the "native Americans" across the land bridge. One has to wonder what happened to them. Genocide, and the theft of their land, perhaps? Evidence of this was unearthed a few years back. The "native American" chiefs went up in flames and demanded that the evidence not be presented as scientific fact.

These comments are a bit harsh, in my opinion. I was mostly intrigued by what the rest of her family is doing. I'm surprised they used the names they were going by, as they probably changed them in order to distance themselves from their grandfather. It WOULD be difficult to live in that shadow. How much would we harrass Hitler's children if he'd had them? I can only imagine...
Actually, few people know this but there are grandchildren of Hitler living in the U.S. right now. One of his sons, Patrick, came to the U.S. and lived here until his death.

@chachito, In additon to patrick being Hitler's nephew not his son, Patrick also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II fighting against his Uncle. If he had been caught, I imagine he would not have been recognized as a POW and would have been sumarrily executed. I would say he proved he wasn't his uncle in any way, shape or form.

TC and Debi_E, I have to agree with both of you on the rudeness of people today and the worst part about them, they are everywhere we go now, not just in here. Myself, I'm really tired of them. This poor woman had Josef Stalin for a father, then had 3 husbands who died, her young brother died in a concentration camp, and her other brother drank himself to death. She had to leave 2 children in Russia to come to the US to try and find some sanity. I hope she found at least some peace and protection on this planet while she lived in AMERICA. Sounds to me like she lived a life of hell. I pray that God is holding her now and forever.

Yep, you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family. Then after living with and seeing what her father was like along with reading about him, I really doubt she was anything like him even remotely close. Its a shame she wasn't close to her children the rest of her life after she left to come here, which makes me think they may have been more like her father than she was. That part had to be tough on her but I'm glad she ended up getting married and having a life. I actually give her a lot of credit trying to get away from her past. Probably was a real nice lady too.
I doubt her kids were more like her father than she was. Remember, they were left behind. They were also indoctrinated in the Soviet system. In their eyes their mother would have been a traitor. And Lana herself sounds like she was very conflicted about her actions to a point. She wasn't just leaving the Soviet Union she was leaving her home.
You see this split in many defectors. Some hate that they are leaving their families and countrymen behind (if you do this in North Korea expect your relatives to disappear).

Actually I believe it was an uncle of Hitler's who defected from the Nazis early on and spoke against Hitler in Europe before receiving political asylum in America. He continued to work with American authorities to make anti-Nazi propoganda which was directed at German troops.
He had already changed his name so after the war he blended into American suburbia where he raised his children, Hitler's cousins.

From what I know, it was he who helped his country break away from the Ottoman Empire, gave them a common language, reformed the government and rallied his people to fight for their land. Mussolini's granddaughter is leader of the MSI in Italy, the Italian Social Movement, a neo-fascist group allied with the clown Berlusconi's party in the current government. Luckily Mussolini didn't survive the end of WWII, hanging from a lamp post. His modern followers deserve no better.
We also gave asylum to the Shah of Iran and his family and he was considered as big of a murderer by some as the regime that replaced him. Any number of Bin Laden's relatives live in the US. Should they be kicked out cause they have the misfortune to be related to him?
We've also been quite generous to the relatives of dictators who have been friends to the US. So I fail to see why Stalin's daughter should be treated different. She did reject him.

I am an immigrant from Russia. I am proud to be russian and because of that I know better then any american how great America is. Also because my grandparents and my parents lived during USSR I know how hard and scary life was then. I am so glad I got a chance to become a US citizen. I completely disagree about immigrants never becoming americans. We are maybe not americans in your opinion however we sure appreciate USA and all the rights people have here. I am sure Svetlana Alliluyeva appreciated every second of her life here too.

I'am originally from Wisconsin and I can agree with you 100%. I was born,raised and lived there for several decades. It was not always as bad as it is now. Why did I leave?? Because I was afraid I might start shooting. Its like a damn police state, as the rest of the country has become. Some states are not so bad yet, but soon will be, because that spook in the White House will get another term.
I now live in a third world country where I have my freedom back. I will return to my country when the civil war begins, or maybe if that spook is not re-elected. The real pity is I own real estate in WI. Finally we got another Republican governor and he will not last long, because he has morals and brains. Some anyway. LOL

Sure it's the pubs that are like communists. Both believe that only a miniscule, wealthy elite should run things. Both are opposed to unions and treating workers like slaves (remember, it was a union in Poland that began the downfall of communism). There are many, many more things I could list that prove that communists and pubs are the same thing, sharing the same mentality, possessing the same goals. Look at how the wealthy pubs want to keep doing business with communist China.
No, I can't think Wisconsin can get more communistic because it's run by Republicans. Being run by Republicans is about as communistic as one can get. The Republicans in Wisconsin want to do everything they can to control and dominate workers, and if they can get a law passed punishing them for being even one minute late for work (for which the workers will get as little money as possible in order to get more money for the plutocratic, politburoish corporatists) I'm sure they would try. I visited the USSR when it still existed. I heard (in hushed tones) how fearful the working class was while the elite got all the goodies. You think you had it bad when you lived in the USSR? If you put and keep the Republicans in power, you'll be living through that nightmare again. We Americans have it great, but that's slipping away. When I was there, I talked with an elderly Russian baba. She asked what it was like in America. I told her how America was consumed by the "greed is good" mentality of richness and power and how it was using our democratic system to engrandize itself even more. She shook her head and a tear rolled down her cheek as she said: "Then you will become like us."

Having the courage to flee the oppression of the Soviet Union showed great strength of character. Americans who were born in and/or lived in communist countries are often very strong advocates for our capitalist system and our great United States of America. Seeing how "the other half lives" can be very instructive.

I am absolutely agree with you James. It took a great strength to go against not only USSR regim but also father which was STALIN. Many people were haunted by Stalins military and killed because they left USSR or even the ones that just talked about leaving. He was very psychotic about power and controll

Yep, so very true Sylvia. I think a lot of the people that leave those comments don't understand a different life to the ones they have. They have never been anywhere other then the state and city they lived in all their life. Then they think they know what their saying when most other people that have been in different countries or have read and understand what its like to have lived in a different country can see these people know nothing. Education is the key here, no matter how you got it, parents, school or just reading, most people that leave these comments have none of this. May she found her country now, r.i.p.

With all due, the first few sentences of your post are intellectually inconsistent. If someone is AGAINST reparations then they ARE saying that they are NOT guilty of the sins of their forefathers - so why should they pay?
Like you, I don't hold this woman at all responsible for the mass murdering despot she had for a "father." It's fairly well known he was a horrible father and husband. May she rest in the peace she seems not to have had in life.

So many have forgotten that almost every ethnicity in the U.S. came here for a better life. Almost every ethnicity was/are ostricized by those that came before them. Yet most eventually became productive when given a chance. She came here because she had given up the way of life in the USSR. Even found god. Some should be ashamed of themselves. Some take being in the U.S. forgranted by persecuting different thinking, poor, weak, needy, down on their luck people. Some people already here dont deserve the U.S. offerings. But they are still here.

...seems like she was an example of a statism upbringing, once she left the control of the Soviet environment, she spent the rest of her life searching for her indivdual identity - her problem was that she was too long (brainwashed) in the mindset of the state being greater then the individual.
