In-house corporate magazines are supposed to make the company look good, but The Wall Street Journal is asking whether Planet BP, the oil company's organ, is smoking something:
[I]n Planet BP — a BP online, in-house magazine — a "BP reporter" dispatched to Louisiana managed to paint an even rosier picture of the disaster. "There is no reason to hate BP," one local seafood entrepreneur is quoted as saying, as the region relies on the oil industry for work.
Indeed, the April 20 spill on the Deepwater Horizon is being reinvented in Planet BP as a strike of luck.
"Much of the region's [nonfishing boat] businesses — particularly the hotels — have been prospering because so many people have come here from BP and other oil emergency response teams," another report says. Indeed, one tourist official in a local town makes it clear that "BP has always been a very great partner of ours here…We have always valued the business that BP sent us."
Fortunately the articles — on which BP declined to comment — don't go as far as praising that new treat: seasonal shrimps in (crude) oil.

Disgusting. There is absolutely no excusable reason for attempting to spin or downplay the loss of human and animal life and the severity of the economic and environmental impact which will be felt for years as a result of this event.
Agreed! This is the most ridiculous article i've read on the oil spill, you obviously don't live on the coast like i do.
these people don't have a clue, to them the spill is just a little problem to over come, then it will be back to busness as usual. they can't see what damage they have done to the gulf because they think they can make it right with some soap and water and a little cash. when the leak is stopped, if it's stopped they will start fighting any regulations that the congress tries to put in place on deep water drilling and they will get what they want as they usualy do because they own the congress.
Your downplaying. They are upplaying. Trying to be optimistic. There is a choice...one you can see the glass half empty or half full.
Or how to take a lemon of a situation and make lemonade.
So get off your high horse and stop playing doom and gloom by making excuses and destroying other people lives.
FYI: I have no assiciation to that part of the country or BP or the OIL sector. Just blogging off reports and all this backbiting and illegal manuever to get gain.
BP spent between $700 million to $1 billion to Google, Bing, and Yahoo to buy all the top 20 results slots for hundreds of search arguments (such as "oil spill") The sites that come up are a mixture of domains within the BP web site and numerous scientology-like pseudonyms that are actually redirects to the BP main site. (An example is www.saveourgulf.com which redirects you to BP.com.)
Between this and their current TV ad campaign, they have spend more on PR than the rest of the spill capping and cleanup expenses thus far. This is just a continuation of the philosophy behind the "BP Cares" ad campaign on which BP spent more money than on all safety, environmental, and alternative energy expenses and investments combined.
I would like to see an article about the stirring up of some latent concerns about the U.S. in Britain. As far back as the early campaign, British friends began asking if there was any information around on Obama's reaction to the British in Kenya falsely imprisoning and torturing Obama's grandfather. This was a big thing in the British press that saw little coverage. But the Brits have been very edgy about this and Obama has said little about it, certainly nothing that would expose his current thinking on the subject. But one has to think that somewhere in the back of Obama's mind is some resentment that a member of his immediate family was a WWII decorated veteran of the British and at the time was retired from the British Army and working as a cook and handyman for a British family. The reason I say "falsely" is that Obama's grandfather was from an ethnic group in Kenya who did not share the "Mau-mau's hatred of the British.
But from why my British friends are telling me is that BP is conducting a seriously brutal anti-U.S. campaign, claiming that pensioners will lose their pensions if BP is put in a financial position that makes it unwise to distribute dividends until their likely future can be determined. They continually seem to want to draw a linkage that says a) the Brits tortured Obama's grandfather, b) Obama self-identifies himself as African-American rather than mixed race, c) Obama hates the British because of the torture issue, d) that BP is a British company and therefore it is the British that are getting blamed, and e) that this is some sort of Obama conspiracy to punish the British. BP is apparently running TV ads that portray this and show the Barton screw-up.
So BP is pulling a Tea Bagger stunt. And as a result, especially with a new conservative/coalition government coming in. This is kind of a "perfect storm" that could damage British and European public opinion for decades.
Yea, and 911 was good for New York City because of the new construction work. The corporate culture at BP terrible. They seem to forget the lives that were lost.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Big Oil, not just BP, will use the spill to gouge the consumer at the pump. Does anyone actually believe that BP won't try to get YOU, the consumer, to pay for everything? Think EXXON didn't make back everything from the Valdez yet? All of Big Oil has boasted their record profits. They're all nothing more than big egos with even bigger mouths. I say dump the oil down their freakin gullets and make them all pay royally.
Not sure if i should laugh or cry on this one. This is like saying at least when a house burns down and family is destroyed, but its good for medical personal, firemen and construction workers since it will give them more work. I realy wonder if people actualy believe what this article is saying or are they just spinning it.

Quote: "BP is conducting an anti-US campaign"
It is not BP stirring up the Brits but it is the British media who like nothing better than to have blaring headlines.
Most Brits (and Americans) don't realize just how American BP actually is.
BP is multinational and, although head-quartered in London, hasn't been British owned for the last thirteen years. The company was formed by the merger of Amoco (the American oil giant) with British Petroleum in the late 90s. For a while the company was called BP Amoco.
BP is owned by investors (shareholders). 40% is owned by UK investors, 39% is owned by US investors and 21% by others. So BP is 39% owned by Americans.
Of the 80,000 BP employees 30,000 are Americans. BP employs two times as many Americans as they do Brits.
I'm not a fan of BP. Far from it, but some of the info presented here is just plain wrong. www.saveourgulf.com does not redirect you to a BP site. The top 20 google his are not all BP sponsored. I understand the hatred and anger, but lets not go throwing mud. It isn't called for. Plenty are dirty enought as is.
BP makes we want to throw up. After all the deliberate lies, half-truths, half- hearted attempts at fixes, they now actually have the nerve to say "it's good for business"? Really? For how long? If these supposedly unsolicitated statements from "locals" (hmmm.... couldn't possibly be paid endorsements, or even BP "plants") are in fact true, how long will this prosperity continue? About as long as it takes BP officials to blow town when (if?) the leak is finally contained. Then what? Does BP think that in the Gulf area they have created the eighth wonder of the world, and that millions will flock there to see what's shaping up to be the largest man-made disaster in history? Not likely. In fact, long term, just the opposite will happen as large areas of the Gulf and its sensetive, unique ecosystems will remain polluted for probably decades. The only people making money there then will be banks (foreclosing), and moving companies as people flee the Gulf en mass. BP, shut up. You have zero credibilty with the the American public, and in light of some new facts now coming to lght such as ignoring your own engineers about the buildup of pressure in the well, and Halliburton, who engineered the platform, urging 7 supports rather than the usual 5, which you, in your omniscience, ignored. You have been irresponsible on the corporate level to a degree that will hard to match. I hope the good people of the Gulf area sue your pockets inside out.
This is the way the globalist elite think. We are the smalll people
I cant stand to even read this article....the ignorance and arrogance of BP has reached a all time peak. They say its a good thing!??!?!?!?!??! DO THEY KNOW UNDERSTAND THE UNREVERSABLE DAMAGE THEY ARE CAUSING TO OUR ECOSYSEM!?!?!? No one seems to @!$%#in care either.....im bout to start a riot, i cant handle this @!$%# no more!
As disgusting as you find it, I had friends who worked the Valdez oil clean up. Yes, the locals did love the money, whether you think they do or not. They said they made several years worth of wages in just months. In my opinion...about 25 % of the money spent will go to line pockets in various ways...there is no choice, the bad get paid with the good.
who wrote this "BP spent between $700 million to $1 billion to Google, Bing, and Yahoo to buy all the top 20 results slots for hundreds of search arguments (such as "oil spill")" you can't really believe that can you ?? Didn't you even try to check it.
John - "who wrote this 'BP spent between $700 million to $1 billion to Google, Bing, and Yahoo to buy all the top 20 results slots for hundreds of search arguments (such as "oil spill")' you can't really believe that can you ?? Didn't you even try to check it."
Um, ABC, Reuters, NPR and numerous other news outlets have reported this. It was publicly confirmed by BP spokesperson Tony Odone that BP is buying up related search terms on several sites. So it IS true and BP admits it. Which you would have discovered if YOU had tried to check it instead of assuming it was false and debating someone obviously better informed.
Payyourself
When life gives you sh!t make @!$%# sandwiches. When you're screwed, lean into it. And thank you for supporting the system.
If that is the case, we should make the spill an annual event. Incredible attitude. Boycott these bastards!
Dont see how Boycotting helps the region.
You should be hoping for BP success so they can pay for the clean up.
Are you so naive you actually think any money they make will pay (completely) for the spill and its impact? Get real!
fyi Exxon has still not paid the money they were told to pay for their spill (infact they have paid more for legal actions to try and get out of paying, then they have paid for cleanup)... what makes u think BP will be any diferent? they will pay to get it stopped and then thats it anything else will be left for us tax payers to deal with one way or another.
"That which does not kill us, can only make us stronger." Said the man, with no arms or legs.
Are these people on drugs?? What else could explain that sort of logic?
the logic of having locals quoted as saying there are economic impacts that aren't negative.
or the logic of the media writing a headline that is inferred by the public as a quote, when it is not.
Like it or not, if BP is paying 20 billion for something...I assume it is going somewhere it wasn't going before...where do you think the money is going ??
this is like saying a shooting rampage is good for the hospitals!
good one!
And is it not good for the hospital? I would hope a company (hospital) in the business and yes I mean business because we all know healthcare is business of healing people would benefit from such a thing in a solely buisness manor....
good one, except that is a media quote, not BP.
and, where did you think the 20 billion was going to (aside from lawyers) ?
I think Healthcare right now in the U.S. is more of a business of treating people not a business of healing people, that way they make more money!
This is obviously one-sided spin that paints BP in a positive light when in fact they are exploring and drilling in a domain for which they lack the necessary expertise, discipline, respect, and integrity toward wildlife, the community, and Mother Nature to name a few. I will vote with my wallet by boycotting this company out of existence in the Gulf region with the hope that more will follow me.
I live on the water in Pensacola, while this could have been any of the oil rigs owned by an americam company, The comment of Louisana about BP is terrible So what if you all are getting business from them. Come and see what they are doing to our beaches, Louisana and Miss.and parts of the texas and even Mobile Have horrible beaches because of greed from oil moneies. Its to bad we can't send the oil back where it is appreciated Louisana , New Orleans is a beautiful City, Walk the streets at night and sniff the smell of garbage.
It's a strange world we live in. Those that have to put others down in order to make themselves appear better. I'm sure Pensacola has no crime and or gargage! I"m assuming no roads either, since they obviously don't use oil!!!!
So I guess you wish NOLA had been completely destroyed by Katrina, SampsonsLady? I will dispense with reasonable argument in rebuttal and resort to this:
Screw you, bitch.
This is sickening and appalling. Who in their right mind would try to publicly put a positive spin on the worst man made disaster in recorded history?
What nerve. What I'd like to know is what happened to the guy who jumped 10 stories off that burning rig to save his life; no life boats were left. He was interviewed on 60 Minutes but has not been heard from since. He laid out exactly what the facts were as to why the pumping mechanism on that rig blew up. He clearly outined the chain of events, from the constant urging by the guys back in the office to speed up production, even after chunks of the rubber liner, etc. started spewing out of the line. How much clearer can it be that the simple cause of all this death and destruction was the greed of BP and their blatant disregard for safety procedures and the reports of huge problems by their staff on that rig.
Hang 'em high. They knew exactly what they were doing but, like all criminals, they are only sorry that they got caught.
Typical company and typical management. Whats new. Hang them all high. There would be nobody left in the world.
The Rig owner and contractors are to blame. Stop making excuses. They should have told BP to jump in a lake and did the their work properly.
Now, BP gets to pay for it along with a few other investors that are now whining just like the rest. Congress is the biggest offender and whiner. Obama just flat out is doing illegal stuff again but whats new.
Just typing out loud, who really has jurisdication in the world over this? I dont think it was on american soil. What a messy legal battle. All these greedy countries would like a slice of the pay.
BP is atleast cleaning it up regardless. I can see them just giving everyone the finger and filing a bk and reorganizing their assets or selling them off to their buddy companies.
Much like all the crooked banks in the country. Obama knows it but refuses to stop this trillions in scheming to feed the treasury. Amercia is no better then the PIIGS.
Balance the books.
Get off oil and onto RENEWABLES. Energy is there but aparently there is somebody holding up the distribution of it. HMM
Duh? What kind of weed are you smoking. Your rants make no sense and your political attacks show your right-wing bias and failure to see the truth. Sounds as if you're into Big Oil. Maybe you're drinking oil and it has some side-effect that we don't know about.
TW stated,"Duh? What kind of weed are you smoking. Your rants make no sense and your political attacks show your right-wing bias and failure to see the truth. Sounds as if you're into Big Oil. Maybe you're drinking oil and it has some side-effect that we don't know about."
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I
I agree, payyourself(republican/conservative/tea partier) rants make no sense!....she/he is parroting republican talking points in his/her comments.
payyourself is obviously a member of the "Big Business is God" club. Only in some psychotic version of reality could someone conceivably justify BPs odious pr spin on the spill as "good". Hardworking American citizens have lost an entire way of life because of this disaster. And saying it's "business as usual" is NOT a justification, it's just another reason to work to change "business as usual" so our kids can maybe have a better world. Payyourself is also obviously a far from a "legal scholar," as evidenced by the repeated mantra of the bitter Right: "illegal". The republicans have done a jam up job of creating another buzz word for the misinformed with that one. People who can't be bothered to even look up what an escrow account is, much less the standard legal practices involving them, just grab onto the word lately and spew it out at random intervals when their Obama hate takes control of their minds (pretty much all the time)! Get a clue - and a soul - payyourself.
Sometimes the truth hurts. I have good friends who worked the Valdez clean up...one, they did not feel the coast was doomed for eternity in spite of what others said. Two, they did make years worth of wages in several months, and were pleased by it. Turns out they were right, and right.
BP made a huge mistake and now has to pay for it. We will keep demanding our SUV's get cheap gas...because we have no accountability.
You're aware, payyourself, that one of the ideas BP had to 'clean it up regardless' was to set the oil on fire, regardless of the the fact that, had they been allowed to do that, the wetlands would have been destroyed. I was listening to a NPR (I believe) report in that and BP was quoted to have said something along the lines of "At least the oil would be gone.'
So yes, they are cleaning it up regardless, regardless of what further damage they may cause that already destroyed ecosystem
Speechless! Just when I thought BP can't do anything else stupid can they.........WRONG!!!!!!!!
Wow, that a twisted mind for ya, just WOW!
There is always some good that comes out of disaster. I would rather see the Brits get the spill, so they could get any good out of it. Unfortunatly, we got it. BP may be filling hotels, but it's not with money spending tourists.
So the cit is making money, while the habitat, as well as animail suffer and die. I'm not so sure I see this as a good thing. I live feet from Pensacola Beach and this is not a pretty thing to view. Can someone tell me other than money hungry people making money how this is a good thing. Sorry but I'm still pretty pissed with BP and the slow movement of the white house. But I guess they dont live here, Go Figure.
Alot of people are not happy with congress or BP or Obama. Lots of rhetoric.
Atleast Kevin Costner put $20mm many years before the disaster for cleanup technology. We will see how well that works.
Wow this is so uncaring and absolutely horrible. I live in the Bahamas and we are now threatened by this massive event. BP should at least show some level of remorse as oppose to the constant downplay of the effects of what they have created.
companies dont show remorse. They have no feelings. Wake up!
Problem with the banking industry. Is they steal and cheat and try to re-invent the process of lending with securitiztion and with new words just to steal more money from borrowers and investors. The GOVT and judges are blind. Or just as corrupt.
BP and others involved have their heads so far up their asses that they can't see daylight. Liars all. Greedy mongrels all. Arrogant all. They have no concern for people. They will do anything to lead a luxury lifestyle. To hell with every single one of them.
I can't even look at a picture of one tar covered sea bird without crying. I feel so quilty for being a member of the human race. I will never understand how these people can live with themselves.
Shut up you tree hugging hippy. If you feel so guilty don't ever use oil again! Most people don't understand that oil is not just for gas. I bet you can't go a whole day without using something made with oil. Don't feel guilty, just accecpt it, we need oil.
Nice! :(
If you don't like trees Jake, don't use any paper or wood products, and use your self righteous hand with which to wipe your arrogant ass!
Misty,
I really like your retort to Jake. Right on !
we dont need oil you rtard, its just the cheapest thing to process right now in order to make fuel and other things from. for everysingle thing that is made from oil there is an alternative, but greed rules this world we live in so they choose the cheapest base material in order to turn a larger profit.
its just like elec. companies that still burn coal to produce elec. yes coal is by far the dirtiest of the fossil fuels but it is the cheapest.
Hypnotic, check your facts before you call someone a rtard- we DO need oil. Even if you got rid of every gas powered vehicle on the planet you would still need plastic, asphalt, electrode bindings, and a multitude of other products that are derived from oil.
With that said, as a society we truly should be putting more effort into reducing oil dependence for hydrocarbon products like gasoline that make up most of the demand.
If I were to think like BP, I would be well within my rights to kill off family livelihoods..kill off wildlife surrounding my home ...and leak oil out of my truck onto the streets where I live! Shame On You BP
The loss of human, animal, and ocean related life is horrible. The damage to the environment is horrible. The consequential damage to industry like fishing and their employees, families, children, and relatives is horrible.
So has almost every man-made industry in history. If you add up all the deaths from industries (drivers, mechanics, factory workers, etc, etc) it trumps all recognized and un-recongized wars, conflicts, and military action. 126 TIMES MORE PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM THEIR JOBS, than all miliatry action in history.
Think about that!
Where do you get those facts from?
It's the LORD's will! It may seem horrible now, but "tribulation brings salvation". X
Please tell the Lord to stop the gushing oil and clean up the mess. After all, the earth is God's creation and not meant to be destroyed by greedy fools.
@ papagriz -- This is "The LORD's will."????? You have a direct phone line to Heaven, did He whisper that in your ear, or what??
What a crock!! This is the result of MAN's arrogant, ignorant GREED --- nothing more, nothing less.
And, BTW, if this tribulation is bringing salvation, I wish it were inflicted on man alone, and not the myriad of other life that has no control over what man does, but nonetheless is suffering, dying, and smothering in oil.
Can you ask God to come down here with some sponges or something? Maybe a whole bunch of paper towels?
...and while your at it, have Him smite the specific individuals responsible for all of this.
just an fyi for the holly roller, claiming something horrible that has happined is gods will is blasphemy. so is judgeing others so i will refrain from saying you are going to hell.......
D.R I can't either. This world has become so obsessed with greed, we are on a down hill fall and the ground is approaching fast.
Lords Will???? Lords Will??? As if G-d would do this on his (or her) schedule to see how the stewards of this planet will handle the tragedy...Thats Absurd...It all comes down to money and GREED Promote Solar!!!!!
solar is one option but not the best, same for wind power. the thing about those 2 types is that there will be times of the day/night where they wont be producing energy. the cleanest and safest is nuclear energy. but anytime u say that people get scared and picture homer simpson running the plant or they think bombs, the facts are that there has never been a non-weapons based nuclear plant accident (ie. meltdown/explosion) and that oil refineries polute far more than any nuclear power plant ever could.
Chernobyl ring a bell, you moron?
This has to be a comedy script.
If this is not tongue-in-cheek, we need to dump them all in the Gulf with life rafts and sponges until it is cleaned up.
I know, PR departments do this kind of thing. But not THAT stupidly.
There should not be any unemployed oil workers due to the six month moratorium.
The thousands of oil workers that might be unemployed should be paid by BP to clean up the beaches.
If they are in the oil business, they should also clean up their mess.
"Capital idea, Watson!" "Give that man a ceeegar!!!"
Oh my, let's blame "the gods"...I wonder how that works for ya'?
Only an IDIOT would believe that 100 million gallons of toxic oil and methane flowing into the Gulf is a GOOD thing.......God help us all in the USA .....the tyranny of BIG OIL is taking it's toll on the quality of human life.
WOW! This will be the Repugs campaign slogan...
"BP! GOOD for the economy!"
After reading this.....I know now why the rest of the world thinks Americans are stupid...
Not even "the Onion" would make a joke article like this.....
