Anne Thompson, NBC News Chief Environmental Affairs Correspondent, has been covering the Gulf Oil Spill since the Transocean rig Deepwater Horizon exploded and the leak began at the end of April. She responded to questions about the Gulf oil spill crisis before President Barack Obama’s third trip to the region Friday.
President Obama has received a lot of criticism for how he has handled the oil spill crisis, in particular for being too cool and not showing enough emotion. What can he do to really make people in the region know that the oil spill is his biggest concern and he is doing everything he can to fix it?
I think this is all a Washington parlor game, quite frankly.
People here want this leak stopped. That is job one. Anything and everything the president can do to make that happen, that’s what people care about here.
No one has come up to me and said to me, “He’s too distant. He’s too cold. He doesn’t feel our pain.” I have not heard that.
What they want is this leak stopped. And then they want to be sure that they are going to get paid by BP on a consistent basis.
This is primetime for these fishermen. This is when they earn most of their money. A $5,000 check sounds like a lot, but when you normally earn $5,000 a day – then it doesn’t go very far.
If they get a $5,000 check or $1,000 check from BP, then they have to worry if there is going to be another one? They want to make sure that there is a consistent schedule of payment as this thing drags on. Right now there is no end in sight until at least August – when the relief wells are finished.

The fact that it is Obama’s second trip in a week, and third all together, do you think that is making any difference?
I think that the president responded quickly to a proposal to build sand berms – these new six barrier islands that Gov. Jindal (Louisiana’s governor) has been proposing. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, the government's point man for the disaster, gave approval earlier this week for the berms. When the White House said that BP had to pay for the berms – that went a long way. That gives the local governments here the ability to try to defend their own coast line, so that was very important.
I think Obama is supposed to meet with some local fishermen today who have been directly impacted by the spill and that will go a long way as well.
It’s been reported that the containment cap placed atop the gusher is now collecting about 1,000 barrels a day. In the big scheme of things, how big a difference does that actually make?
Well, let’s take the low estimate that the government now says is coming out of that well which is 12,000 barrels a day. If they are collecting 1,000 barrels a day out of this containment cap and they just started – you are collecting a fraction of what needs to be collected. It’s better than nothing, but not a whole lot better than nothing.
The containment cap is just a temporary fix because it doesn’t stop the leak. BP is going to start working on yet another containment system next week to try to gather up the oil that this cap doesn’t get.
But these are all band aids on a major gash, a giant gash. The problem here is that we have a situation no one anticipated and no one had a fix for. And six weeks later, still no one has a fix for. There are plenty of ideas, but none of them are guaranteed.
Part of it is because this problem has never happened a mile beneath the sea before. That puts us truly in uncharted waters.
The only thing that anyone has any certainty about is the relief well. They know it works, they know they can essentially kill the well by drilling another well, intersecting with the leaking well and putting a cement plug at the bottom of that well. They know that works.
But that carries risks as well. You’ve got to find the well three miles under the sea and that’s not easy. Yes, they have experience with it. But again, there are no guarantees.
The relief wells you mention are not expected be ready until August. If the leak isn’t plugged for another two months, will a lot of the environmental damage already be done?
And being ready by August is assuming there are no storms, no hurricanes. That’s assuming that they can keep working without interruption, which is not very likely.
That’s one of the reasons why they are starting the second containment system because they are trying to do everything they can to keep collecting oil while they can. At some point if a tropical storm develops out in the Gulf, or there is any kind of severe weather, they are going to have to pull people back to land and stop working on the relief wells.
The strategy has always been to fight this oil spill offshore as much as possible. That is why we have seen this huge amount of dispersant being used to fight the oil spill.
But the problem is that for all the dispersant they have sprayed on the water and under the sea, the oil is still coming ashore.
We are just starting to see the beginning of this. Can you imagine what the coast is going to look like, what the marshes are going to look like, what the beaches are going to look like two months from now?
When the day finally comes that they kill this well, you are still going to have residual impact for months and years.
This is not a problem that the Gulf region is going to escape anytime soon.
What is the mood among locals at this point? Is it angry? Resigned? Depressed?
I think its resignation. When top kill failed last weekend, I think it really started to sink in that this was going be a problem that was going to last a very long time.
People here understand that and they are trying to deal with it as best they can.
But it’s hard. Looking at those pictures of the pelicans yesterday – and those other birds that you can’t even determine what kind of birds they are because they are browning in the muck of the oil – that is just heartbreaking. When you see tar balls on the beaches of Pensacola – that is absolutely heartbreaking.
And here in Venice, Louisiana, I can go 45 minutes from where we are staying and be in a marsh that is thick with oil.
The smell is the worst thing. Until you smell it, you haven’t experienced it. It is so vile and it gets in your noise and your throat and your lungs and just stays there. The consistency is like a combination of molasses and chocolate syrup and it just stinks. You put what it looks like with what it smells like, it is just the most unpleasant thing.
This is going to go on for a long time. We are going to be dealing with this as a nation for a long time. There is no quick fix. Obviously, we are six weeks into it and quite frankly we are not much closer to killing that leak today then we started.

Maybe the people of Lousianna would receive more attention from Obama if their elected officials and voters were not so stubbornly right-wing. The simple fact of the matter is Lousianna is a failure of a state. New Orleans is known for one thing: a huge uncontrolled party where people expose themselves in public and urinate in the streets. It is a filthy place. Billions of dollars were spent on Katrina repair and the only thing that was done was by the Federal Government that built new levies. The state and city have frittered away their money. In my opinion, forget Lousianna it is unwilling or unable to move forward.
Wow Edward that is pretty brutal. Are you going to say the same thing when the oil inundates Florida, a rather left wing state, or will you cry out with rage that it has been unjustly effected by oil from Louisiana? I think this is a National problem as well as an environmental disaster that has nothing to do with party affiliation.
Jenny, since when is Florida a "left wing state"?
Edward, I'm from New Orleans. And let me say this: Louisiana is NOT a failure of a state, and New Orleans is NOT a drunken flop. I love where I live and I'm proud to tell people I'm Louisianian, and before you go on with that billion dollar crud, if ANY major city was to be 80% redone, do you think it'll cost billions? No, it'll cost into the trillions and that's just the city of New Orleans. I'm rather displeased at your remarks against some really great people and a really wonderful place.. You should come visit us sometime soon, but please lose your illwill toward us.
That's all Obama is...words...no action or plan. He has no real credentials of experience. He honestly does not have a clue what to do.
Simply put, you hit the nail on the head! Obama is clueless and can only campaign! I feel sorry for the folks in the Gulf States.
Louisiana is a great place and New Orleans is a wonderful city. I am, however, stumped as to what they expect Obama to do about the oil spill. This is not Katrina where we needed to bring in food, water and supplie. This is a very technical procedure and not even the oil companies know how to fix it. This is not an easy fix and he is working through the proper channels and with the right people to get it fixed. nmw and Michael, I too feel sorry for the people in the Gulf states but I'm smart enough to know this is not Obama's fault and he can't waive a magic wand and get the problem fixed. Get real - this is a difficult and complicated problem. We can only hope the engineers can figure out how to fix it soon. And, if the Bush/Cheney administration had not taken the safeguards off drilling requirements, we wouldnt' be in this situation.
My question is what side are the animals....right wing or left???What the ???? does it matter? Ohh that is right they have two wings or what is left of them...By now two wings with oil on them... Well maybe not after this diaster. They will be dead..Right is right and wrong is wrong... And this situation is wrong it makes me sick and I dont even live there..I am ashamed to live in a country that cant find a solution and drags it a?? on fixing problems.. I worked for the government years ago and I know how slow they can be. I was so hoping they would get on this situation but politics has won again. What ever happened to what you know and not who you know in life...This is the political way in life.. You scratch my back I scratch yours and you bet money involved. Except when you need it to clean up this mess. WE are all effectived by this mess. Should have never happened. Who was paid to look the other way. What idiot was given this job, by who he knew. Obviously he did not know what he was doing or we would not have this spill. CEO should never be paid that much money. Greedy SOB only profits where spill gets cleaned up or not. And by the way this is not about you. ADS IT is time we got together and cared about this mess. Political or not it affects us all... And time for the president to get upset and get something done. 46 days. R u kidding me..What the hold up paperwork??Stupidity..Politics any excuse. All useless to these animals and small creatures. They dont care who the president is or if the cap fits. They just want to live. This country should be embrassed. We think we are so smart but look at the results.. just go to the beach but wear your hasmat suit...
If that is Obama's guideline for doing his job then he is a pretty sorry excuse for a President. He is supposed to be the President of all the people, not just his political cronies. And your view of our state is myopic and ignorant. I suppose we should aim for a loftier political goal - say, Chicago.
It's hard to have sympathy for Louisianna - these people have enjoyed the tax revenues and wanted more and more oil wells for years ... and it just never occurred to them that this could happen?
I have seen people blame environmentalists claiming they could drill on land except for environmental complaints - do you have any idea just how crazy that is? You drill where te oil is, you drill as close as you can get to the oil
This childish blame-someone-else game, blame Obama, blame government; this is the entitlement mentality of the right; take no responsibility for your own actions. Louisianna you wanted this oil; your GOP representatives and senators were all for "Drill, baby, Drill" and this is the consequence
Man up and take some responsibility
I have heard that Louisiana is having a hard time finding people to help clean up the oil. Here is an idea. Why dont the state go out, round up all the people who receive government funding (welfare, medicaid or whatever else they can get), and all the ones who begged for help after Katrina, load them up on buses and drive them to the areas that are effected by this huge mishap and put them to work. Make these people pay some restitution for all of the handouts they receive and are going to keep receiving for years to come. I for one helped out after Katrina by building houses here in Ohio and shipping them to areas affected by Katrina. I pay these people medical bills and I put food on their tables without asking for anything in return. I am asking now. Get off your backsides and do something productive for once in your life. How much longer do we the taxpyer have to keep bailing out the ungrateful.
Garfield,
Your brain is smaller than the cat you're named after. As a tenth generation s.e Louisiana native, the true failure is the attitude of fools like you. I suppose our tax dollars (39 billion/year) are good enough to fund the bailout of megabanks, financial institutions and auto corporations, but are not good enough use here. You sound soCal, and it figures. That gas to get you to your next skateboard party, and the fuel for Air-force one, it's gotta come from somewhere, much of it from our hard work. Or would you rather get it from Imadinnerjacket or Chavez ?
I'm a SoCal native AND a resident of Southeast Louisiana, and both Garfield & Sketchbone, you eff'n suck. Isn't there enough sh!tslinging going on, without making blanket remarks about each other with (probably) no experience of each other's place?! Grow The F-ck Up.
I went to Grand Isle last weekend, and I saw for myself miles and miles of empty beaches, where there should have been thousands of people.
this disaster SUCKS, and i hate to admit it, but I'm KEEPING my 150 shares of BP stock, and when it plummets further, I'll buy more and more. I'll be a glutton for it. And in 15 years, I'm going to not only be rich off them, I also hope to have a say in how they're running their monkey show.
It's true that Louisiana has its problems, but neither those, nor the tendency toward conservative positions by its voters would (nor, do I believe, does) serve as justification for giving them less than their just due. It seems this leak is far and away a greater problem than BP has ever needed to correct, and in hindsight, it could be said that the Feds should have moved more quickly (and done - what, exactly?), but then again, these same critics are the ones who complain about governmental meddling with every action by this president - you simply can't have it both ways.
Based on what I've seen in the last year, it's safe to say that fixing the mess in the gulf and walking on water in the same day wouldn't suffice to earn Mr. Obama one drop of the respect he deserves from his critics - their minds have been made up for some time.
The oil spill is possibly the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. Now, Obama is blaming Republicans, proposing economy-crushing climate legislation, and launching a criminal investigation. If the oil spill is the president’s top priority, he needs to prove it with actions, not rhetoric.
With his actions during this latest crisies, Obama has proven he has no leadership abilities whatsoever. Time to send this empty suit to the cleaners.
Still blaming his problems on George Bush, Obama proves he is a buffoon
For all the idiots taking their swipes at Louisiana for whatever reason, please then quit eating our seafood that comprises so much of what is provided for the rest of the nation; get out of your cars and walk as we labor to provide the nation with so much of "our" oil that is now polluting our waters and land. And if you hadn't noticed this damn mess was produced by BRITISH PETROLEUM. Basing your opinion of New Orleans or Louisiana on what happens on Bourbon Street (where most of the people exposing themselves and urinating in the street are tourists, is a poor way to define our beautiful state and great people. We've survived 4 major hurricanes in 5 years, we'll survive this. Now, please if you hate us so much please respect my stated wishes, cause seafood is gonna be hard to come by and I love my shrimp and oysters.
Rick, your comment is inaccurate - there have not been four hurricanes hit in the Louisiana area in five years. The only severe one hit by Louisiana was Katrina, Rita to a lesser extend, and you just got the rain if anything on Ike. I do NOT know of any other OFFICIAL hurricane in those five years.
And, to top it off, Ike was a category three, and the state that got hit with the dirty side (the stronger side) was Texas, not La.
See, this is why people are upset with Louisiana - we are upset with La. constantly complaining and wanting more money. In Texas, Galvestonians affected by Ike had their FEMA housing REMOVED so it could be given to Katrina "victims" three years after Katrina hit. By then, they should've been out of the housing and moved on.
So, Galveston also just picked themselves up and started to clean up after the storm (some cases immediately afterward, while Louisiana just kept complaining that help wasn't on the way. I mean - to hear stories about people not bringing the barest necessities to the Superdome showed how inept they were as far as the storm. NO one I know if in Texas or Florida forgets to bring food water (and I mean for several days) and other necessities to any shelter.
And now, they're doing the same thing again - the majority of Louisiana citizens are sitting and waiting to be bailed out and not doing change on their own right.
Listen - I know damn well there are many hard working Louisianan people. Met many when they evacuated to Texas - and they also got jobs and many cases paid back in their own ways the people who helped them with money or other items. Also for many, the storm was a wake up call to do something with their lives. That is to be commended.
But when I read stories like this, I get frustrated because this never works well - the longer people say "Help me, feed me, shelter me, etc. government" the less they depend on getting stuff done by themselves. To me, that is pretty much making yourself slaves to the government, and to me that is the saddest thing of all.
I think a lot of people would be more sympathetic to all of Louisiana instead of remembering only those who are on welfare (and choose to be, not for example disability) and getting mad.
Louisiana is not broke like CA nor do we have the budget and unemployment problems most other states have. If you back Louisiana's history it has been more left than right, only moving to the right in the last couple of Governors. Remeber Huey P Long and Edwin Edwards? This problem was not created by Louisiana just like the Corp of Engineers failure to design Cat 5 hurricane projection. This is not going to be a Louisiana only problem for very long. Just wait until it starts up the Eastern coast. Gov Jindal has been on the grown since day one, not out playing gold or doing interviews about his opinions on the NBA playoff. BTW most of the doing lewd things during Mardi Gras are tourist not people from Louisiana. Although we do like all the tourist money that comes in during Mardi Gras.
Edward: Are the pelicans, completely immersed in oil, right-wing too? Even if they are, do they deserve such an awful fate? People like you. You're small, just like your pecker.
Jenny: Speaking as a Floridian, you just cannot generalize about our state and dare to call us all left-wing! Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Gainesville ok, but not the rest of us. You can love us or hate us, but no one can ever generalize about this particular state.
And we will fight this disgusting plague with every bone in our bodies.
Mel -
You obviously know nothing about hurricanes because the strong side of a hurricane is on the right side of the eye which means LA was on the strong side of hurricane Ike. This is why we received damage in Sulphur. Also, I can tell you of another hurricane that hit LA hard this past year...Gustav. So those are your four hurricanes. For all of these hurricanes, most people I know cleaned up and rebuilt after they hit with no governmental help including people living in New Orleans after Katrina. We do have people here that live off of the government and are just looking for the next hand out, but all states have them. So don't put us all in the same boat because those people disgust us too whether from LA or not. FYI: I along with most Louisianians think it was ridiculous for our government to extend the Katrina relief for as long as they did. Our Louisianians now are asking BP to compensate them for their livelihood. This situation is totally different from a hurricane because these people can bounce back and know what to expect and how long. They don't want to give up on the only life they have know in an area they love so much. I am sure if you have every been touched by living in a great culture you would understand.
What I just don't understand is why Louisianans were so quiet during the Phony President's visit. If he comes to certain parts of Florida, I don't think that we will be so nauseatingly well behaved. I know that I won't be. I've been busted before when it was important, so it doesn't matter to me. In fact, I would advise Obama to stay out of Florida for quite some time. And Gov. Crist better stop defending Obama NOW if he desires any political future here. He defended Obama again today on cnbc, and it didn't fly with me. I was going to vote for him, but now I don't think so.
WGoin: What can Obama do? As the President of the United States, still the most powerful individual in the world (but not for long), he has easy access to the best oil/gas, deep sea experts from the best institutions in the world. He has elected to allow British Petroleum, with the worst British engineers in the world (trust me on this!), to take control of a monumental crisis that has enormous national security implications and that will wreck a huge part of our environment and our economy.
In the past 42 days, while the entire Gulf of Mexico has been dying a man-made death, Obama has criss-crossed the country doing Democratic fundraisers, performed the usual stump campaign stops in Youngstown, Buffalo (where they didn't even want him!), Pittsburgh, Norfolk, just to name a few. He has vacationed in Asheville and in Chicago and has hosted lavish parties, wining and dining the Mexicans, of all people, and Paul McCartney (Paul who?). Obama just doesn't care about the Gulf. He only reacts when it becomes absolutely necessary. We are all doomed as a nation. You idiots should have known this in November of 2008. It's too late now. No leadership! No moral fiber!
"Why dont the state go out, round up all the people who receive government funding (welfare, medicaid or whatever else they can get), and all the ones who begged for help after Katrina, load them up on buses and drive them to the areas that are effected by this huge mishap and put them to work. Make these people pay some restitution for all of the handouts they receive and are going to keep receiving for years to come."
You need to get your facts straight. The biggest US Welfare state:
1. California
% of pop. on assistance: 3.30%
2007 spending: $3.28 billion
Total recipients (July 2008): 1,212,893
% Change in past 12 months: 10.4%
Unemployment (May 2009): 11.5%
Louisiana was not even in the top 15. And you have the temerity to call us bigots!
It's sad that you don't think the people of Florida know how to behave. Perhaps you are wrong to so generalize quite a large population. Or perhaps you are right, and the people of Louisiana were just better brought up. Mr Obama is the President of the United States. He is also one of the most hard-working, intelligent, and committed presidents I remember having in the White House. Even if he weren't, though, the office should command your respect, even if you are misguided enough not to appreciate the man himself.
unfortunately memory is short. The big oil companies paid your willing politicians and you as citizens voted to allow the drilling off your coast's. TX. , La., Ms. , Al. Now your same politicians and citizens want to jump on some sort of band wagon. Don't blame BP, BLAME your own stupidity. Common sense should trump all. If you play with mud long enough you will get dirty. Be upset with your local politicians and yourself first. stop asking the wrong questions. When i lost my house to Ivan, there was no complaining. I Knew it could happen and that's the risk i took. You took the risk, so stop asking the gov't and anyone else to forgive your ignorance and accept it.
"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." —President George W. Bush, Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002
Wow thats still in my head. Thanks
You are an @!$%#, these are humans lives and you don't discard because they are not up to your standards. Who in hell do you think you are?????
What an ignorant statement. WOW! Can't believe statements like that even come out of peoples mouths. This is one of the worst world catastrophes and that is what is said, he might help them if they were not so right wing. It is going to be raining oil people, and not the kind the world will benefit from. There are millions of animal and plant life being destroyed in the ocean that provides food, rain, and so on. When are people going to get it, oh yeah, I know, when they destroy the earth and have nothing left to take from it.
Have you ever really put yourself in our shoes? Obviously you don't have the consideration to even attempt that. We did ask to be born into families that reside around the new orleans area. Besides that, New Orleans does have some great qualities other than a trashy Bourbon Street. It has Louisiana's biggest aquarium and an awesome zoo know as the Audobun zoo. These are examples of the things in New Orleans that are positive for families and friends to do. So please don't defy New Orleans by its filthy Bourbon Street and definately do not defy Louisiana by it either.
Personally, I do not live in New Orleans. I live in a town called Houma and it is 45 minutes south of New Orleans. Most of our residents in Houma are very friendly and family oriented. We were born and raised here and we love our state. We do not have an bourbon like streets here. In fact, we have a local university where many of our high school graduates are obtaining degrees. Doesn't this sound familiar to you? Yeah, this is the place that WE call home, and we love it just as much as you notherners love your home town/state. So before you judge a place, why don't you come here and experience it for yourself?
As for as this oil spill goes. Let me just spill my opinion about that as well. Before the spill happened lets examine the position BP was in. Many would say that BP was "the cream of the crop" as for as oil field companies go. Many would also say it would be a pleasure to say they worked for BP. Now that an accident has happened on BP's lease, everyone downs them constantly. I am very sorry for the families who lost loved ones and I do not take that lightly. As far as the spill/explosion, it was an accident and could have happened to any company. I guess we can call it the "Nature of the Beast." It's dangerous work in the oil field, but lets think about the alternative. The economy of Louisiana and many other states depend on the oil that is drilled in the Gulf. It has also given so many people jobs. Would we really want to see what its like to not be able to drill in the Gulf? I can assure you one thing, many of you would change your views quickly on all of this!
Another important factor in this mess is that BP is not the only company responsible. There were other companies out there working that day, and hopefully sooner than later this will surface.
As far as our president and government. Why is it that we are so quick to help other nations, like for the disaster in Hattie. And we can't even help our own nation. Let's prioritize here!! It's quite obvious that this problem is a little bit too large for one company to handle on their own!!
Thanks for reading.

Eddie, FYI, after growing up in NOLA and working in French Quarter hotels while in college, I can tell that 9 out of 10 people exposing themselves in public and urinating in the streets are not from New Orleans. They are tourists who are out to do the things they would not think of doing back home. No native New Orleanian would be so unprepared for partying as to not plan to have a bathroom available to them nor do they urinate on their own streets and buildings. Many tourists on the other hand have no respect for themselves or the city as evidenced by the lack gentlemanly or lady-like behavior when they come to visit. They are fortunate that we are generous hosts and allow them to take a break in their partying to regain their senses rather than put them in the parish jail.
Also, I am curious how such a right wing state elected US Senator Mary Landrieu?
Lastly, I noticed you were so proud of your city and state that you did not mention it. I am sure that it is not in area that has floods, tornados, forest fires, tsunamis, mud slides, or earthquakes and I certainly hope it is not near a nuclear power plant, fertilizer, chemical or battery plants, coal or any other kind of mine, military bases, grain elevators, etc.

Wow, Edward...finally a person with fiscal responsibility and acts on facts rather than emotion. New Orleans was recently ranked as 1 of the filthiest cities in the US. Your comments are right on. They should have to repay for dike repair and next time MOVE to higher ground...continuing to rebuild underwater is insane! They do play good football though... otherwise all they do is beg and whine!
I agree totally with you.....FLORIDA never had the help after a hurricane that Louisiana has had. Florida has hurricanes every year and you don't hear them crying "OH GOVERNMENT WE NEED HELP AND MONEY SO WE CAN BLOW IT ON WHAT EVER WE WANT" When Katrina hit alot of the people from over there were brought to Texas. I have never in my life seen so many ungrateful me me me people in my life. And before you say it I have lived through alot of huricanes down in Houston and we never said oh whoa is me.
Shame on you!
Edward, you need to do your homework before opening your mouth and letting the sewage flow. I highly doubt you have stepped foot in Louisiana. You can not judge a state, much less a city solely on the events that occur on one street (Bourbon Street). South Louisiana is stocked with more culture and great people then can be comprehended. I've lived here for most of my life and I still am amazed at this great state's people. Obama is the president of the United States of AMERICA. Not the United States of WHOEVER IS LIBERAL. If the real agenda is HOPE and CHANGE, then show me some. Show me that huge government won't get in the way of the better good. You're comments are proof of the short minded brainwashing that's happened to the Kool-Aid drinkers of liberalism. Lastly, learn how to spell or use technology before you post. It's spelled LOUISIANA. (The little red underline means the word is mispelled.)
Sorry Blake ! Edward is right. Intelligent people don't build their houses below sea level. Also after the election I noticed yours was one of the red states. Maybe if you had supported Obama he would be a little more inclined to support you.
I cannot believe that you people have decided that if you are not a Democrat that you are worthless and don't deserve any consideration by the President. JEEZ! So when the Republicans get into office all the Democrats can rot in hell? What a great idea!!!!! Let's make this all about political power. Kiss the ring or die!
CRAIG BARDELL !
WHERE do intelligent people build their homes? On a major earthquake fault line? In the middle of Tornado Alley? On top of each other on a small island in the northeast? On a river's floodplain? In the middle of natural wildfire forests? In the middle of a Nevada desert? On a Florida key? (4X as likely to be hit by cat 5 hurricane as NOLA). You may notice many more "red" states this November and in November of 2012.
Craig: I don't care if I'm suspended forever, but you, sir, are a total @!$%#.
Sketchbone...that is the best response I have seen in a while!!! Touche!!!
"Sorry Blake ! Edward is right. Intelligent people don't build their houses below sea level."
You don't think much of the people in the Netherlands, do you?
enough, leave kool aid alone.......
Exactly what is president Obama supposed to do? I know, and we all understand, that these folks are hurting along with the wildlife in this delicate ecosystem, but how do you propose he "stop the leak"? I'm sure that many of the very people who are complaining the loudest and demanding action from the president are those most opposed to "big government". Whether you're one who wants the government to do everything or nothing (Libertarians), in this case, what can they do, and specifically Obama personally as many seem to be clamoring for? BP is responsible for this disaster; demand action from them!
Exactly.
What is Obama suppose to do. Stop the leak with his finger. He's not an ENGINEER and they are stumped. So what should he do? Go back to school, to become an ENGINEER?
obama needs to stop giving a bunch of dumb ass speeches, and as mayor nagin said during the aftermath of katrina, get off his ass and do something...uh...like lead the effort. Oh yeah...that's right...he formed a commission...oh yeah...he also told holder to see about criminal charges. Wow...what a relief...I had no idea he was in such command. Your idiot president is standing by and doing absolutely nothing while the seas are being poisoned. He is the only one that has the authority to bring this disaster to a resolution. Hope you enjoy your gulf shrimp...might taste a little greasy...but you don't mind greasy...especially if your idiot president provides it for you...right?
Jim - your ignorance is unbelievable. He is leading the effort. He has brought the best people together to try to find a solution. And, he has also sent thousands of our military to help try to clean the mess made by the spill. The only idiot here is you!
This is my point also. What can Obama do? What honestly and really more can he do? He is great but let's be real. The best petroleum engineering experts in the world are working on a solution. This has never happened before and no one knows exactly how to fix the problem. They are choosing the best solutions possible without the benefit of trials and detailed study. This is not a state disaster nor even a regional disaster. It is as nation wide disaster maybe even world wide. We will all feel the consequences of this event. Now is NOT the time to politicize. Now is the time for us stand together and support each other as we must all "wait and see". There is not a quick fix nor can Obama be the fixer. We cannot be like transcontinental, bp and halliburton (intentionally not capitalized!)and blame each other. They alone are responsible for this mess and they alone should be held accountable by every living and breathing American. We can support the administration in their efforts to keep the 'boot on their neck'. God bless every soul of the Gulf coast. My prayers are with you for strength and patience as you wait out this disaster. Also, may President Obama continued to be guided by wisdom and level thinking as he leads this nation onto the other side of this challenge.
Interesting how folks want "less governement" and "smaller government" right up until a terrible and tragic event like this....and all of the sudden...."why isn't the GOVERNMENT doing something to fix this?" We can't have it both ways.
For years now, conservatives have gutted regulatory agencies, and taken the teeth out of any real regulatory laws in the name of less government intrusion and greater freedom. Now we will pay the price for the short sighted ideaology.
grtoday
first of all, they were burning the oil, "oh no we can't do that, we might hurt the enviornment.," like it's not being hurt? Then Gov. Jindal wanted to construct sand berms, "oh no, that might hurt the enviornment too." Just wait until the oil get to Florida (a state obama carried) then he will put things in gear. Right now, BP should be consentrating on stopping the leak, and the gov "should" have been consentrating on containing the spill, quit pointing fingers, then after it's over send BP the bill. GR I'm willing to bet you critisized President Bush for Katrina
Yes BP is one culprit of many, but don't you drive a car that runs on GAS!
"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again." —President George W. Bush, Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 17, 2002
This guy was our President!!!!
What's this about Obama not doing enough? I thought we elected the president to run the country Not manage oilwells. Pilots fly planes, barbers give haircuts, oilwell engineers fix oilwell problems, let's let the president manage the country!
Obama can't manage anything. He is spending this country into the ground with his socialist agenda. He can't do anything about the oil, so why is he wasting our money taking three trips to the gulf coast. He needs to stay home and keep his lying mouth shut.
Obama can't even do that! I see his jobs speech yesterday really made Wall Street rally today. Step away from the cool aid and realize the man is clueless, the king wears no clothes!
Michael you and William are the clueless ones. And, the cool aid comment - so ignorant!
I think they should pump all the spill BEHIND the dikes and move New Orleans to an above sea level location. Thilthy city and this is something good that they could do. The biggest cry babies in the world live in La. & they do nothing about it themselves just beg!
Chief, you're an ass. Over 1/2 of the NOLA metro area is at or above sea level. While you're at it, you may want to move millions of Californians away from major fault lines, Floridians away from the coast, Nevadans from the desert, New Yorkers off of each others backs, midwesterners out of tornado alley, or maybe we could move you into reality. Fat chance.
Your argument is flawed because the places you use as examples are not whining and begging for tax dollars. You think half at or above Sea Level is good...it is insane to keep rebuilding a city that should be under water...if you love it so much use your tax dollars if you even pay taxes?? Same for the people in the Mississippi flood plane that rebuild every few years and cry because the flood took away their home...MOVE! Look at the recent poll of USA's filthiest cities and see where New Orleans ranks...that is if the substandard La. school system taught you how to read...they sure didn't teach you fiscal responsibility!
Well chief, New Orleans and people in the Mississippi flood plain (NOT PLANE- that's like a plane in the sky) will continue to build where they are, continue to use tax dollars and you will continue to pay those tax dollars to support them and there is nothing you can do about it. It is about free will and the freedom to live anywhere you choose whether it be a tornado alley, hurricane zone, fault line, igloo in Alaska or a city where people breathe eat drink and live in other people's waste.
Exactly.
What is Obama suppose to do. Stop the leak with his finger. He's not an ENGINEER and they are stumped. So what should he do? Go back to school?
he may not be an engineer, but he has a group working for him called the Army Corp of Engineers... if he had a brain, he'd of had them down there the next day, had them in charge, and possible this wouldn't have gone on so long...
Bubba - your name says it all. The Army Corps of Engineers has been called in the first day. However, they are not experts in the area of oil drilling. It is highly specialized.
W. Goin. You are an arrogant ass. You sure are a brave person spewing all those nasty comments from behind that monitor and keyboard.
Dear Grumpy--
This is a discussion. People are going to disagree with one another. Being offered an opinion different from your own is not "nasty."
You can best believe if (and now when) this mess affects the East Coast, Obama & his cronies will have experts from Japan, Germany, and other countries from around the world involved and this mess will be fixed..! It is just disgusting that they are not doing that now, in fact they seem more concerned with how to "save & gather" what oil they can rather than stop the leak, after all BP can't make billions of dollars if they can't save the oil, and I for one am sick of Obama's endless speaches..
Hey grumpy old man...you probably think anyone that can properly write a real sentence is arrogant....go back to your grumpy filthy city and talk to the rats in the streets! New Orleans should admit they made a mistake building below sea level and MOVE to high ground....quit begging for tax dollars to keep the water back.....relocate somewhere that is not underwater or fix the dikes yourself. Except for Jazz and Football La. is a wasted spot on the map! The most corrupt state in the union! Worse than Illinois and New Jersey! Every Parrish is on the take!
W. Goin : first off, what is it that my name says to you ?
second: since the news has said nothing about the Army Corp Of Engineers, how is it you have knowledge that doesn't seem to get reported?
and for the record... THERE ARE NO EXPERTS for this kind of disaster, But Obama has said on t.v. himself, not reported but actually shown on t.v. that as far as he's concerned BP is the expert and has the tools to fix this. (which is not true...since the oil still leaks today)
But you did your duty, you have given Obama a pass on this disaster.
A viable strategy is to partially federalize the BP oil spill incident, use tankers (rather than 1,600 boats) to collect and separate the oil spill, and stop the use of dispersants.

Many of the comments on the various message boards regarding what President Obama did, did not do, want him to do, don't want him to do etc makes one laugh because many of these folks writing these messages are the same ones who beat up and call the President names at the drop of a hat.
They want the Oil disaster cleaned up/contained/plugged/capped already. Yet they say he is not the Saviour that the rest of folks who support him think he is......LOL
They also say he really can't walk on water......LOL Yet these same folks who may be saying these things are the same ones who want him to be the Saviour and walk on water, perhaps even part the Gulf in twain reach down and stop the leak all in one swoop...LOL
These may be the very same folks that are critical of the President even to saying that he is not their president etc and may even now want him to federalize the BP Gulf gusher...... Yet would not that be socialism?.......LOL
Thank goodness I am an Independent........ I believe in a public health plan, nationalizing of these industries/companies etc who took tarp or bailout monies, and even the nationalization of BP, Transocean and Halliburton for the duration until they do the cleanup and make the area and the country whole.
One Louisiana mayor/parish rep is complaining of the moritorium on digs/rigs etc to do a proper assessment and no doubt safety checks etc in the Gulf talking about the loss of jobs and income etc even as the Gulf and the wetlands etc is awash with oil.....LOL
These folks need to get real..... and maybe grow some commonsense.......
BZe1 - Finally someone who gets it!
Why didn't the White House demanded that BP immediately move all of its supertankers to the Gulf to suck up the oil, near the beginning of these 40+ wretched days?
Why hasn't President Obama put out a call to ALL oil companies to bring in their supertankers?
Why is this hemorrhaging allowed to go on, without any attempt at cleanup? WHY.
What are we waiting for?
The supertanker idea was explored but wouldn't work. The oil is so dispersed that the supertankers would be sucking up something like 99% water, so it would just be a waste. Also supertankers are extremely difficult to maneuver, and so it's much more effective to have smaller boats work on it.
Don't you think if there was an easy magic solution to fix this situation they would have done it already?
Great Post Florence and Good Questions!!! I think we all know why it has been allowed to continue.. The administration wants it to completely destroy everything so they can push their LOONEY LEFTWING TREE HUGGING AGENDA and push a CLIMATE BILL we cant afford and DO NOT WANT!!! You should be ashamed OSAMA for using the American people as PAWNS in your SO_CALLED NEW AMERICAN FOUNDATION PROGRESSIVE BS Agenda...But I have news for all you NUTJOBS it want work and thanks for everything youve done to let your TRUE colors shine through...Come on November and 2012 if he doesnt wise up and quit before then..Idiots
Florence - are you serious? No attempt at clean-up? Are you living under a rock??? You don't have a clue!
FLORENCE,
I'm not trying to start a fight, or even an argument, and it's obvious that you're upset, however, it's easy for everyone on here to throw their two cents in.
To shed some light to your question...ONE, I don't think 40 super tankers would be enough to carry all the oil spewing out of this pipe. TWO, how would you get 40 EMPTY super tankers. That would be a lot to ask of the tankers already carrying oil for us to use now, prices would probably SKYROCKET if they had to stop what they're doing empty then come to help.
Everyone is quick to pass the buck, and "SCOLE," you calling everyone else "nutjobs?" The pot calling the kettle black don't you think? "No," yeah TRY to think about that one. It's understandable that people will want to throw blame, Obama haters will come out of the woodwork (as "SCOLE" proved), and conspiracy theories will abound.
Why do people focus their resources on throwing blame? Because it's easy, because it takes more energy to stop and THINK...instead of just "going off" on someone else. That's why. We are not going to solve this problem by doing what you and especially "SCOLE" are doing here now. I hold no hope for him, but you "FLORENCE," have passion that is not completely tainted in cynicism. The tanker idea was a good start. Maybe you could build on it and see where it goes.
Good luck to us all. God bless America.
Some reasons why the supertankers were not brought in from day 1. LOL
Because 1. although BP could have done this (brought in supertankers) from day one, they did not want to do so because the real amount of the oil gushing into the Gulf would be known, something they were trying to hide in the first place from the look and sound of things....
2. Because it would cost money to lease these supertankers from other companies and BP more than likely did not want to spend the monies to pay for same.....
3. Because BP probably thought they would get away with this gusher and environvental disaster like they have in the past in Alaska, and in their other spills etc around this country and around the world. The old tossing a few bucks at the right people etc through their lobbiests and everyone would forget about it or make whatever harm they have done go away, disappear or covered up.....
4. Because they probably think they are too necessary to fail.....LOL..... Aren't they the company that supply the federal govt with oil? LOL
5. Because probably there are no supertankers available in the first place. Perhaps because these supertankers are parked somewhere full to capacity with oil that was purchased when oil was at over $150 dollars per barrel......LOL
Talk about a glut of oil if it should be unloaded....... wouldn't it make folks wonder why the cost of gas is so high...... Hmmmm Isn't price dependent upon supply and demand? With all that supply and with the cut back that folks have been doing including getting rid of low milage cars ...... perhaps the demand is not outstripping the supply.....LOL
Perhaps there are other reasons but it is best to let others think of other reasons for not bringing in supertankers ASAP......
The EPA ok the continued use of the dispersants as the lesser of 2 evils...... makes one wonder why?
This bafoon is a joke, the only thing you will ever get out of him is lip service. All the while, he runs his Chicago style political machine to destroy the American Constitution and advance his socialist agenda. He needs to be removed from office!!! Along with every other simple minded liberal. Come on November and 2012!!!
Oh my god that's the funniest joke I've heard all damn day Mrkwildcat. Honestly now, the right wing has done so much to destroy the Constitution lately that it's, well, not funny at all. Those who scream "less government" are the same ones chanting "drill baby drill" while supporting bills telling women what to do with their bodies, and laws telling people who they can marry. Throwing out the "Obama is wrecking the Constitution" card is nothing more than bold faced hypocrisy, and talking points, of the right wingers.
ferrferr
You are correct in deed. But since you are a typical liberal, willing to make assumptions about someone Else's political stance, you have once again proved your very own hypocrisy! I am no right winger, in fact I detest the notion of LIBS/DEMS/ AND REPUBS. I am a federalist! The only law is the Constitution! And your boy blunder is no different than the rest of the politicians on the hill...Transparency? Where is it? All he cares about is turning our country over to Mexico, and appointing members to his cabinet who are willing to forgo the Constitution, and deny AMERICANS their sovereign rights...Go ahead, prove me wrong....you can't....Hell! He has already broken the federal law by trying to bribe 2 members to not run in an election. Top that with refusing to enforce the very laws he swore to uphold, and bingo! My statement is spot on!!!
I don't think we know the long term effects of dispersant's...the devil we see ..OIL..may not be as harmful to humans over time after dispersant chemicals get in our food chain and cause cancer..so the devil we don't see..DISPERSANT'S..may be worse long term!
Those people that want Obama to do more... Aren't you advocating communism? Should he nationalize oil production companies so that he has access to their engineers and equipment. Obviously the federal government doesn't have oil well capping capabilities, but companies like Exxon might, are you suggesting (surely not) He can't even nationalize BP because it's an English Company. Also, what about all the "American can do" spirit that spirit that Obama is accused of squashing. Why aren't all those fishermen and coastal natives out there cleaning the wetlands and stronger building barriers. Why are you all whining about the government not doing enough to clean up your community. Right wingers can't have it both ways. We can't be a country of tiny federal government and huge "can do spirit" and capitalism in one scenario and then in another scenario a country full of whiners that the federal government isn't solving all the problems
So do all these posts giving obama a pass on the disaster in the gulf now vindicate bush on katrina. I mean what was bush supposed to do besides what he did...that is beg the governor to let the federal govt. come in immediately only to be told no or was he also supposed to do more than just call nagin 3 days before katrina hit and tell him he needs to evacuate new orleans. Oh yeah...I forgot...bush is a white male christian conservative. Please forgive me for not hating him as much as you guys.
Great post Jim! Wow I wouldve never guess just like Bush Osama doesnt like Black people either!!! And hell by the response in Nashville he doesnt like country music or White folks...He doesnt back the Arizona Law either so I have finally figured it out he MUST LOVE ILLEGAL MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS...Who'd a THUNK IT LOL!!!
SCOLE, Since everything has it's pros and cons, YOU are what's wrong with our country. You are much like the pipe in the Gulf, you're trying to poison us. You spew hate, not answers. You're like a virus that tries to reproduce by jumping on other peoples ideas and make them feel validated, then you try turning them into little hate monsters replicas. Though I'm sure even someone like you has supporters, I feel sorry for you. You must feel alone. You must have some deep seeded hate inside that you feel compelled to spread in an effort to save yourself. America would be an even better country if people as passionate as you, found something truly noble to stand behind and push other than what you now hide behind. God bless America, and please help SCOLE.
What are you talking about? Katrina?LOL the diff in the 2 is that with Katrina you had plenty of GOV boats that could have went out an got people off the roof tops.....You the national guard that could have protected the superdome- you could have air lift food to people while boats where coming in to save them....Has nothing to do with being christian maybe you need to read alil more on the founding fathers of the country an there views on Christianity instead of looking at the BS your pastor is telling you while thinking he is a prophet stay away from that 700 club an study your own bible. In any event its all a game halliburtan again....and I see none of you writing letters or protesting anything they do....rather you be liberal,Libertarian,fiscal/socail conservative jew muslim or christian...or like me a true American
Right. Way too little, too late, again!
I propose that all 3500 oil rigs are pulled out of the Gulf immediately...capped and evacuated! Now tell that to people in La, who live and work on those rigs,,,,Ms., and Fl and Al., and listen to the crying then! A million people have made good livings off of those oil rigs! Put another 1 mil out of work!
Crowne2 - I understand what you're saying but what is the answer? Just let the drilling continue with no real provisions for spills like this? Or do we begin to work on other sources of energy while drilling at shallow depths where this kind of spill would not be as much of an issue?
oil spill eater II is the answer to the gulf spill www.osei.us
This isn't the first time that something like this has happened in the Gulf of Mexico. The first time it happened, the oil leaked for months so there's no way this was a one time event.
It's happened in the past, it is happening now and it *will* happen again.
Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixtoc_I_oil_spill
That one leaked for NINE MONTHS and the water was only 160 feet deep. Yes, it's been 30 years, and yes the technology should exist by now to minimize incidents like this but as long as profit motive drives all things, shortcuts will be taken and politicians pockets will be lined by big oil's lobbiests to look the other way when those shortcuts are taken.
We have no-one to blame but ourselves because we keep electing crooks and dreamers into office.
I heard Obama say this, and say that. But not once have I heard on the news that the Government is doing this or doing that.
Then you haven't been listening!
RYAN SCHWING,
And your plan right now is to drive your point with two sentences that sounds like a Dr. Sues book? Okay, Ryan Schwing, just a suggestion, try to think about what you want to say before posting. You're not helping anyone or anything.
Start with an educated suggestion on how to fix things. If you don't reply with one we'll just assume you don't have one, and that maybe it's not as EASY as it sounds to formulate a plan to fix an oil spewing pipe in the ocean. Yes, it should not have happened, but we can stand here and point fingers, OR maybe we should try to find the solution. Seriously, what do you think?
I would ask BP why it has not employed skimmers as was used in the spill in the Middle East. I believe it was offered but turned down. I have no idea why BP has turned down all offers of assistance.
Skimmer ships and booms were deployed by President Obama via the USCG. You need to watch the National Geographic special about the gulf oil spill (it is being re-aired on Jun 8th). You will see first hand how the President and our government responded immediately and continues to this day. Amazingly, this information is deliberately being ignored by conservatives.
Even though Obama is not politicizing this by having meaningless press conferences, he has been leading the effort to resolve this since this began. The problem in this scenario is that he just can't throw troops and government resources to fix it.
It is disappointing how the conservatives are using this as a political power play - rather than working toward a solution. But this has been the pattern since Obama won the election (Rush's response that he wanted Obama to fail, the comment about making Healthcare Obama's Waterloo).
Even Jindal has jumped on the political power play wagon by claiming that Obama has not responded quick enough to his request for booms. What Jindal does not tell you is that several scientists and the US Army Corps of Engineers believe that these might redirect the oil to other states as well as other problems.
Each one of us has the responsibility to perform due diligence and research these false claims. If not, we become part of the problem while delaying the true solution and perhaps even never finding one.
Please take the conservative distortions with a grain of salt and support our President rather than spewing hatred and hate-speak.
What exactly do you want the Govt to do? BP, Transocean and Halliburton is responsible for the Gulf Gusher of historic proportions period.
Perhaps what the govt need to do is put the right people that can get the clean up/containment done i.e. make sure that BP et al is actually doing what they are supposed to do and is still not cutting corners by making promises that they are not keeping.
There need to be someone other than the Coast Guard that is taking control/responsible for/ of the clean up/containment effort alone, while the Coast guard can keep an eye on BP and their capping of the gusher imo.
It is time that the polititians in/from Louisiana to stop speaking out of both sides of their mouths. They want to have their cake and eat it too.......
who would think they do not want a moritorium on drilling in the Gulf......
even as oil is making the Gulf into an oil pit and turning the wetlands into a dead zone?
Go figure.....LOL
When will the people of this country stop voting against their own interest and stop being in thrall of these corporations that do not give two hoots about them, the lives, livelihood or their issues - health, financial or otherwise?
One disaster after another and still the same rabid ignorance is spewed out ad nauseum....... When will they learn that Washington has a culture, Congress has a culture just like big biz have a culture.
The president can only change so much. It takes congress to make the changes that is in the best interest of the masses rather than in the interest of the corporations who fund their campaigns imo
If the President is not being given all the info or getting questionable advice then perhaps he will need a shake up in his administration.
But do not blame him willy-nilly for the lack of principled behaviour of the Congress, the federal, state and local govts/players/reps. After all these folks were supposed to be there to represent US or rather the best interest of the the masses and not just the rich and corporations imo.
There are those folks who troll these message boards spewing forth rage and hate......for their own questionable personal reasons. All the while trying to maintain the status quo and are even still trying to give the impression that trickle down economics worked or works which it did not.
Why don't you blame the past administration and their cohorts in Congress for leading this country down the rabbit hole? Why don't you blame the past administration and their cohorts in Congress and in State and local govt for allowing of the outsourcing of jobs overseas so their buds in big biz could make bigger profits?
Why don't you blame the past administration and their cohorts in Congress who stripped away regulations and deregulated the banking/ financial industry, and the mining industry, and the oil industry, the gas industry, the power companies, the health insurance industry and the chemical industry etc etc etc?
It is just so easy to blame President Obama and want him to fix and change a culture that has been intrenched for the past 30 years........
He maybe able to rejig his own administation and shake up his advisors but working with Congress ....... getting them even be on the same page and to stop being selfserving ... now that is harder work than getting the Gulf Gusher plugged imo.....LOL
Bros.. Obama is the best.. he knows his job. Sit back and take a chill pill.. This kind of issues takes time to be resolved. think practically not radically..
What more could the president do about this oil mess? Some of these same people a few months ago kept saying keep the goverment out of my life, but when something like this comes up [ where the hell the president going to do about this]
Wow my mistake everyone I thought I lived in the United States of America, not the "everyone else but me is wrong and a loser" America. I happen to enjoy eeafood and am pretty ticked that my children will inherit a country that will have hazardous waste beaches rather than vacation beaches. As far as placing blame has anyone who has posted here served in an elected office? Anyone?
Obama had no more to do with this oil spill than George W Bush had to do with Katrina. The president can do no more than the people around him allow. He is just a swadow anyway. The people that can do anything are choosing, for whatever reason, to stall or do nothing at all. Stop blaming the president.
maybe this will wake people up. Obama hasn't a clue what to do in an emergency, and his letting BP run things proves it... see this is a real problem, not the kind that throwing money at will fix, and that's the only way this man knows how to handle things, so when this doesn't work he says... I think we're making progress, but evidence shows that there's still way to much oil leaking into the ocean. One only has to look at the photo's of the ocean to see... the average person definition of progress, is very different from Obama's.
ITS BP's SPILL....You can't have it both ways...either you want free market an less govt regulation or you don't......The BP Spill is like the Banks going sour- You complained about the Gov rather it was Bush or Obama who bailed out the banks an now you want the gov to bail out Halibertian and BP again....LMAO....the only consistency in this country seems to be the idioticy(not even a real word..see its contagious) lmao
Original Bubba: Obama does not know very much of anything, aside from arrogance.
All of you is incorrect, America is consumed by greed and Corrupton. We as voters have turned our heads and pretended that nothing is wrong, BP paid your corrupt political leaders to drill those wells. How on gods earth can you build a well 3 miles down and not have a procedure in place to stop a leak such as this. That is the first question all of us was suppose to ask. What happen to the billion dollars thaqt was sent for Katrina, has anyone demanded to know where every dollar was sent and acounted for? no because New Orleans citizens got a few hundred each to keep their month shut. What has Obama done with the two trillion dollars stimulas money, the money that was paid back did it go to offset the budget. We the votes is to blame because this country belongs to the people not the government, the government can be changed but not our country.MAN UP AMERICA AND ACCEPT THE BLAME, IT IS EASY TO BLAME THE PRESIDENT OR CONGRESS.
Wow some of you posters are off the wall. BP and every oil company out there should have had a contingency plan for all explosions, leaks, whatever at all levels of the sea. But they do not. They are using the same technology they used in 1979 for a major oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico. How quickly we forget when things appear to go smoothly.
And for you folks that are blaming the president - WHY? I don't care what political affiliation you are from but there is no way that you can blame the president. I like the one poster that has a major conspiracy theory going on that actually said POTUS is doing this on purpose. Are you nuts?
By the way Florence - all of those supertankers were already full and off to whatever country.
Elise - you're right. Big oil should have had contingency plans and should never be allowed to drill again without proven plans.
I have to agree with you William! This whole country is going to the dogs and President Obama
does not seem to care a bit!
Oh, so now Pres. Obama is blamed for the oil spill and for taking the country to the dogs? Why don't you be more specific about your ridiculous charges. Let's start with the Wall Street collapse and identify every action Pres Obama took to further worsen it. But be careful, you might display your ignorance of affairs of state.
By the way, yes I agree with you that the country is taking the direction of "going to the dogs." Mostly because of extremists, naysayers and the Party of No which is the principal cause of a deadlock of Democracy.
Read "Revelations"in the Bible...this is All there (Earthquakes, everyone turning against Israel.Iran and its neuclear bombs capabuility will be the "fire falling from the sky" I'm not a fanatic, or a "Bible Thumper"..but oh yeah I AM a believer...it's All coming to life kids...try reading it(Revelatiuons) towards the back of the book ( kind of like "the end" lol!)
Connie - what an ignorant comment. What do you expect him to do - put on his superman suit, and at superhuman speed dive under the water and stop the spill? The best technical people who work in this field don't know how to do this - what is your problem?
Dan
The 2 Senators from LA have taken abot 1.3 million from the oil companies. They are maintaining a low profile. But before you blame a party-of-no senator as being that way, the Democrat has taken the lion's share. BTW, I am not affiliated with any political party and I vote for the candidate I feel will represent me in DC or the state.
LA - What evidence do you have that because this Senator received money from one interest group, he/she is beholden to that group? This is not like k-street where conservatives actively sold our congress to the highest bidder and delivered to these corporations (above and below board).
I find these arguments limpless as Obama has accepted money from financial institutions in the past - while also pushing for regulations of these same companies.
I do not see the same "sleeping together" philosophy that the conservatives use to protect their interests.
Connie, you are totally wrong, obama does care......about himself.
FLORENCE,
I'm not trying to start a fight, or even an argument, and it's obvious that you're upset, however, it's easy for everyone on here to throw their two cents in.
Remember when Gov. Bobby Jindal, during the Katrina Hurricane crisis said he didn't want any government interference? Now he's crying for govt. help. Makes sense, but puleese stop the hypocrisy.
Gov. Bobby Jindal was not the governor during Hurricane Katrina; it was Kathleen Blanco.
Dan L......
Bobby Jindal wasn't Governer during the Katrina crisis genius, Kathleen Blanco was. Recall that Ms. Blanco famously blamed the Bush Administration for a slow response to a NATURAL crisis that SHE and Mayor Nagin should have been better prepared for. Mr. Jindal, on the other hand, is faced with a MAN-MADE crisis that is clearly the fault of BP and the federal government's lack of proper oversight of activities in Federal waters of the OCS. He started his quest by intending to take matters into his OWN hands to protect his State, only to find the Federal Government standing in the way. Now he simply wants approval to build berms to protect the Louisiana shoreline and is asking the Federal government to approve them and hold BP accountable for the cost.
It is time to quit playing the political blame game. The lack of proper oversight by the MMS that lead directly to this disaster happened in the last few years, during both the Bush and Obama administrations. I am tired of this "legacy that Bush left...." crap. No more speeches, no more finger pointing....get up off your ass and grow the balls that it takes to get things done like Bobby Jindal!!!
Lets get rid of that man.
Nobody is blaming the President for the spill, but in the last 6 plus weeks exactly what has the government done to pro-activiely start spill clean up or help in solutioning how to stop the leak. The Federal Gov. is too big and too slow to react.. Katrina should have shown massive ways to improve and so far we seem to be reacting even slower in this situation..
Sitting back and saying this is BP's issue is Naive and putting way too much at riak..
Is the Federal Gov's role to be there when a diaster occurs?
